I've been doing a bit of testing in Gallente space on how custom ships react to 1 item of contraband (protein delicacies). It all seems a bit random.I seem to get detected at diferent ranges (major custom ships) 10k 15k 20k it seems to be random. Also you don't get a warning that they are scanning you (as you do if a non npc does). You get the screen up telling you to hand over the contraband THEN you see the red brackets indicating you have been targeted. Surely this should be the other way round. If my findings are true then it seems impossible to plan smuggling because of the randomnise of the scanning. Has anyone got any thoughts on this (I really want to smuggle!) p.s also if you scan a custom ship it says it has no modules but the only scanning devices I have come across are modules why is this.

I don't know about the rest, but NPCs don't use modules. They get to cheat in a number of ways. The only NPCs that can be scanned are convoys, when they carry cargo, which they don't currently.

Gonna give you one clue. You'll have to do the rest.
The clue is :- cloak!

I still wanna know what could be smuggled really. The most interesting commodity for smuggle, narcotics, isn't even bought anywhere I can see. Vitoc trading has made millions for me, but just because it is contraband doesn't really mean it is smuggling.
Im gonna start selling my Small Arms which I've gotten from doing mission for Federal Intelligence Office, and that is contraband pretty much everywhere it is sold, so I suppose it will be sorta like smuggling.

Thanks for the replies. It's not about whether it is profitable to smuggle not, it's about the realism of the game. I got an offer from an agent to get slaves thats why I started testing the reactions of the custom ships in the first place. I know cloaking should work but I wanted to see if it was possible to smuggle by a combination of insta jumps, afterburners (or microwarp drives) and timing. But if the reactions of the custom ships are random I cannot see how this can be done. And on that score my main gripe is that I cannot detect on my scanner the custom ship trying to lock a scan on me. If I could then I could extract the minimum time I have to escape before the custom ship locked on and scanned the contraband. BTW does anyone know if the reactions of the custom ships are governed by the security status of the system you are in?

Cloaking works, seems so obvious now.. but can i be able to cloak a whole indy using the covert op cloak??

The Covert Ops cloak only fits a Covert Ops ship as they have a CPU reduction bonus (unless you find a way to extract 5000CPU from an indy...).

Someone recently told me that the chances of getting caught was about 1/10.
I dont know if Faction standing has an impact. Last night I jumped 3 systems with small arms in my cargo through 3 gates with Caldari Customs. I was in a Raven with no AB or MWD so I should easily have been scanned, however, I have a very high standing with Caldari State - would this mean that Customs are less likely to scan you as you are held in high esteem?

Who said anything about Covert Ops? I gave hint to use a cloak the rest of the technique is for you to work out.
