I keep seeing references to a "highway" in EVE. I gather that is is a route that takes you rapidly from region to region for trade puposes. Can anyone tell me (in detail) where this route is? I've never seen a gate marked "Highway Gate".

Open the map and check the number of pilots in space.
You get a good overview of where the highway is situated.

The purple lines (long lines) connecting one sector to another are the highways and can only be seen by looking on the map. There's no actual reference to this on the gates themselves.

You mention purple lines. I have been trying to find information about the color of lines, up to now without luck. Do you or anybody else know, which color means what?

Purple lines = the connecting systems are in different regions
Red lines = the connecting systems are in different constellations of the same region
Blue lines = the connecting systems are in the same constellation

Highways enable fast movement around Empire space, connecting the centre of one Region with the centre of another.
A good example would be the Kemerk/Niyabainen gate.
There are also routes which connect up highways and are consequently full of traffic. One such is
Renyn-Pakhshi-Tar-Manarq-Kemerk-Yulai
If you are going to engage in trade between Regions, that's one to Instajump bookmark.
