Anyone know about WiFi in here?.
I heard a while ago on a random site that using WEP/WPA decreases the throughput of your wireless network? I've just got a new wireless card for my laptop and the range sucks.
Netgear WG602 Access Point Netgear WG511 PCMCIA Card in Laptop Using WPA-PSK Encryption
Access point is located under the stairs, laptop is located about 50ft (17m) away in a shed. So there are 2 bits of wood and a brick wall in the way. I was getting better reception with an unbranded 802.11b USB antenna, now I've moved to 802.11g, I am getting poorer performance (probably as it is a card).
Any suggestions? I could move the access point to an upstairs bedroom, but I was hoping for more of a uniform signal throughout the house.

If you think you can do a better job, go find yourself a datacentre to host a box, get a copy of Visual Studio, and STFU.

Yup, Sheds are great. You can play loud music and the neighbours don't complain, you can hopefully get the wife *waves* to agree to let you put a sofa/fridge/tv in it, and you can VNC to your more powerful machine upstairs to play Eve.
More to the point, I just got the hammer out and moved the AP 2ft up the wall and to the left a bit. Now got 2 bars (instead of none as before). So amazing what a bit of movement will do really.

I have a wireless at home (54g), and as soon as you mention the word BRICK WALL, you get problems. I havent yet been able to find a spot where all my home pcs can talk to the router reliably . Turning off encryption seems to help, but its not good if security is a concern.
I am looking into the new Netgear WPN824 Rangemax router atm, as it has multiple internal antennas, and is supposed to give much better range and performance when there is interference.
Edit: just read second post... EVE over VNC??? WTF???

Ok, Shed because why not?
Most of the house is wired with Cat5 already, just unfortunately the shed was built after this endeavour. Putting Cat5 to the shed would involve digging a trench and also drilling into the house and pulling up carpet. More hassle than it's worth to be honest. Hence WiFi, which seems a lot happier that it is off the ground.
As for Eve over VNC, look at UltraVNC. I can easily login to my home PC from work and do basic mining or ckill changes.

My main PC is connected to my DG834G NETGEAR router via ethernet and my 2nd PC (which is about 30ft away and has numerous brick walls between) is connected wirelessly to it via a Belkin Wireless Adapter.
Security of the wireless network is 128-bit WEP with a shared key and also MAC-address control and I have no range or bandwidth issues.
I did have to mess about with the wireless adapter settings in Device Manager and my network is made so it is only g compliant.

Well ive had problems with mine, ive also got a Netgear something or other and the range seems dodgy. I get a better signal in the extension which is further away (but less solid material to pass through) than in my room where im pretty sure are a large amount of copper pipes hanging about in between.
I didnt really turn up to A-level physics much last year but this would have an effect or something...mebee...someone help lol. Its only protected by mac address, and if someone walks between the router and my laptop while making a call on a mobile theres a 50/50 chance my connection drops :(

Are you running it all on 802.11b or 802.11g? When I tried to run all my stuff on 802.11g most of the other terminals in the house had really poor to no signal, switched to 802.11b and have much better signal, had to get a booster for the furthest away but can't win 'em all.

Edited by: d''hofren on 12/05/2005 12:00:06 I use wifi at home as well, I get a range of about 20' and thats with the signal passing through two walls, one of these is an old exterior wall as well. I get occasional drops outs but probably only one or two a week.
How about building a Cantenna ( howto here ). There are reports of getting up to 2mb across 4.7 miles.
aha, I forgot, many wireless house phones work on the same frequencies as wifi kit. Do you have a wireless pstn phone in the house?
