By that you mean steal good ideas from others while being very protective about their own cool "inventions", make it white and use an "i" in the name, create some nonsense lifestyle around which attracts hipsters and sell it for hilarious prices?
Then yeah, I guess you're right.

It's sad, not so much because he was the CEO of Apple, but because he really was an old-school hacker. Late 70s/early 80s computers are a real fascination of mine and he was a part of that era. He did an awful lot to bring computers mainstream, and it's not an exaggeration to say that he (and Bill Gates, and Woz, and others) have changed the world. |

The Steve Jobs Law: Any conversation about either Macs or Windows will, if allowed to go into infinity, result in a Windows vs. Mac flamewar.
Sort of like Godwin's Law.
RIP Steve, even though I'm a Windows fan and won't touch your iPod with a ten-foot pole. I like to lick things.

I know this is just repeating what everyone else is saying but:
I am not a big fan of Apple (in fact I hate their products with a religious fervor), but you can not deny the incredible impact that Steve Jobs had on the technology world. Even after being kicked out of his own company he founded, he returned to it to pick up the broken remnants and reinvented Apple into the ubiquitous company that it is today.
He will forever be remembered in the technology world for many years to come. |

As a long-time computer geek, and being one year older than Steve Jobs, this really makes me feel my mortality.
I've never cared for Apple products, or their proprietary approach to hardware and software, but I've always blessed Steve Jobs and Apple for the competition they've provided that has helped drive innovation in the computer industry.
Jobs himself was a remarkable individual and an inspirational leader whose like is not seen in major corporations anymore.

It's very true. Jobs and Gates might be loathed by many but they made the 'computer revolution' that has many people using smartphones, tablets and talking to each other via the internets across the globe possible, very probably more than anyone else has done.

PC Magazine: Former Apple Chief Steve Jobs Dies
Steve Jobs was a pioneer of the PC industry. One of the founders of Apple Inc, and its longtime CEO. His innovations have changed way people live their everyday life. I always picture Jobs, and Wozniak as just to two young guys who thought starting a computer company would be cool. We will truly never see a man like him again.
I first did word processing in college of a Macintosh. My first software engineering job was developing high end 3D applications for Apple computers. Those were my paper clip days.
Farewell Steve.

Although I like many here newer really bought into the whole "i" thing or the culture of those things. Overpriced and overhyped to be honest. But the basic ideas and concepts were sound. I'd be seriously stupid not to recognize the effect that Steve Jobs had on our world. From the personal computer to a phone that greatly surpasses that original in a ridiculously smaller package. This man changed the world, he's a modern day Edison. He's had an effect in so many areas, films, animation, computers, phones, music and many more. And he got fired from his own company and started again and his drive was such that they got him back! And most of his breakthroughs and really influential plans came after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2004! He seemed to be driven by the fact that he had seen and tasted his mortality and believed he had so much left to give.
We lost a brilliant human being yesterday, and I dare say that the world is going to be a lesser place for a while.
Rest in peace Steve, you've earned it. |

Indeed. I loved his NeXT computer cube thing and the Apple RISC OS almost found a way into my study.
I didn't like the way that Apple had become a by-word for control freakery but, nonetheless, that's not a reason to mourn the man's passing. |

I think the title of this thread needs to be changed. "Steve Jobs Dead today" is rather disrespectful. It should read "Steve Jobs has passed away" or something along those lines. Just a pet peev of mine.
That said...I never knew the man. Never liked any of his products and never liked his personality. He will be missed by many and his passing away is a loss to the world.

Not a fan of Apple, bought my Mum an iPod and used Macs at school and college growing up and that was it.
However his innovation inspired many products I do use by other companies and the world is better for his existence and brilliant creative mind.
Also I loved Toy Story growing up, one of the best movies ever. So thanks Steve. |

As many people have already said, regardless of what we may think of Apple and the iCult the biggest drivers of technological innovation are competition and demand, and without Steve there would have been far less of both. In the 80's he helped bring computers from blue-chip corporations to our desks, and in the 00's he brought them from our desks to our pockets.
I actually wouldn't be surprised to someday find out that he didn't buy into the "Apple culture" any more than the rest of us and created it only as a means of driving computer technology into the next era...
RIP, Steve. You were the hero we needed, not the hero we deserved. |

I wouldnt say respecting them after they're dead is useless, espeically if you honor thier memories or dreams some of them do much more good well after they're gone. He died 30% lighter and 50% thinner. It was revolutionary!
But enough with the tasteless jokes. Even if you didn't like - for whatever reason - his company's products, the man gave a much needed kick in the pants to the floundering consumer- and usability-oriented side of the technology industry. Overnight he proved to the world that there's something beyond boring beige boxes running a cobbled-together UI, and that cell phones could be much more if someone weren't afraid to actually put the puzzle together. His work ethic and the way he tackled problems is something I'd like to see in any C-level leadership.
RIP, Mr. Jobs, and good luck to the future Apple. Few people such as yourself don't come by every generation. Your family and your legacy is a proud one for sure. |

I hate the phrase, "losing a battle with cancer." I prefer saying that he "took cancer out with him in a heroic sacrifice." (you know what, i don't care if you think I'm weird. )
That being said, we've certainly lost a great person. I don't know what his personal life was, but his contributions to the computer/mobile industry and the world in general were great.
RIP Steve Jobs. |
