Substantial difference, or just a tad ? Most of UK will get this upgrade today i believe, if connected via ADSL, and BT.....

The game may load faster, but that's about the only improvement you'll notice.
The game doesn't get close to using up the bandwidth that you already have (I am assuming you are already on adsl and just awaiting the upgrade), and the latency will be the same.
I have 3meg cable and I still get lag. The majority of lag in Eve is either in the client, or more probably, dependent on the speed of transactions in the SQL databases (server side) - the connection between your client and the server (assuming no mad global routing) probably has the smallest impact when on any broadband. ______________________________________________

I was under the impression that he reffered to 56K-512K with that broadband thing.
IN which case he will notice and improvement just like I did on upgrading to several mb/s _______________________________________________

Agreed - the leap from dial-up to broadband is very noticeable.
Whilst talking lag, does everyone lag badly when checking eve-mails, or is it time to clear my cache again? ______________________________________________

Yes i have 512 connection at the moment, sorry for confusion Just hoped that the step up to the 2MB line would help improve the lagg........im scared to let 11 drones out sometimes.....the whole thing goes in slow motion....then CTD sometimes.

In that case you won't notice any performance increase.
When I went from a 56k modem to 8mbit ADSL, the thing I most noticed was a huge improvement at startup/login time.
Some things will go a fraction of a second quicker, like loading all new objects, once you jumped through a gate... and in huge fleet battles, but the rest stays about the same: EVE sends very small packages of data, which a 56K modem can handle |

only go above 512 if its not much more expensive or you download full movies & games. _______________________________________

that sounds more like graphic lag than it does connection lag. Having lots of stuff on the screen causes me to lag when it is just me there (such as fighting a big shed load of NPCs) and its not down to my connection, its down to my machine.
Avon - Yes my inbox lags for 5 secs or so, i think it might be all the concord kill mails but i dunno
oh and btw, i dont think there is any multiplayer game out atm that comes anywhere near to using up even a 512kb/s in bandwidth terms. Its down to server routing that causes good or bad pings. Im lucky in that my flat is 200 yards from my exchange. This gives me insane pings to "well known" servers such as Jolt etc (sub 20 for most shooters) but crap pings for less well known ones.
Of course i could just be talking out me ass

I play both via a 100mbit and 10mbit link and lag as well. But with the 56-512-2mbit you should def. see a change to the better.

i was upgraded by BT to 2mb and i seen a massive difference between 1 and 2 mb i get average download speed of 190-200 a best of times, i dont get my only lag,
Many people do not realise this but, fleet battles also depend on other peoples comupters and connections and there ablility to send a recivce info as fast as people with 2mb lines and 3.6 ghz of CPU, its not generaly you lagging 9/10 its other people and you are just seeing the results ;)
anyway :P a very wise person told me this!

Guys your download speed makes no noticible difference while playing games its the upload speed that counts really. With most dsl it will be either 128kb or 256kb, this is in the UK & Ireland. The upgrade you received so might not make any real difference if they didnt change you upload speed.
In saying all this EvE uses hardly any real bandwidth at all and the only time you will notice any real difference is moving from 56k to 512+ in speed. ----------------------------------------- Go n'ÚirÝ an t-ßdh leat (Good Luck

Edited by: Riddari on 12/05/2005 11:17:30 I upgraded from 2mbit ADSL to 6mbit ADSL (upload from 512k to 768k) and the only things that seem to be affected by that is a much faster login screen (where you can choose character) and opening people and places (lots of bookmarks and buddies!).
The most enjoyable though is the "next system loads faster" feature... when I jump it takes me a couple seconds less than before to load local, I'm assuming in Empire the difference is more substantial.

For those of us that use dial up 56k lol anything more than 10 ships at once causes some considerable lag - zooming out slightly reduces this problem.
That said pushing the speeds up to 256k i guess would be abel to cope with larger fleet battles and downloading market details etc. But its the upload speed that is all important and unfornetly even quick broadband is slow to boost upload speed.
Still eve online runs at most for a minimal setup if they boost minimum to 128k they might lose up to 10-15k players (active single accounts not including alts) so until some places like australia, nz and some european countries upgrade then perhaps they are best to optimise the game as much as possible and when they cant optimise it anymore and say another 1-2 years then mkae a minimum requirement of 128k or 256k ADSL etc.
