hi, i just got and installed eve and payed my money. unfortunately my 56k seems to struggle. info screens take for ever to come up and often just quit back to desktop. everything i try to do takes several attempts of crashing and logging back on. is there anything i could as regards 56k optomisation? i was told 56k users shouldnt have a problem and i have been disappointed so far... :(( thanks very much for any help/ advice jim

1) download/update and then run a program such as adaware or spybot to kill all the spyware on your system hogging bandwidth.
2) make sure you dont have any programs running in the background.
3) lower the graphics settings all the way down and see if it helps.
if that still doesnt work, then need more info...cpu type/speed, amount of memory, etc.

hi fellow jim :) already done all of the above. the other guy says 56k is fine for him and the times my info screens have opened they were fairly speedy so its maybe not that. running a geforcemx (tried newest drivers from nvidia and the windows drivers) on winXP, running on athlon xp 2100, 512meg ram, 43 gig of HD space (mainly free). been up all night trying to work this out so anything you can think of would be much appreciated. thx again jim

Im also on 56k and have no delays, even when flying around with 20 friends and pulling up menu's left and right.
Sounds like you maybe have a ****ty ISP who dont do data compression for send/recieve maybe?
Try using a different ISP for a day. Eve uses barely any bandwith, i once looked at my send reciecve after 5 hours of play, and it had only recieved 6 or 7 Mb and sent only 3 or 4..so 56k should be able to handle the data transmission easily, however if you are on a high latency ISP with ****ty pings..your in trouble.
As a side note, i tried using my old BT Internet Account..and as always BT are the WORST ISP for gaming..no compression..they route you through 20 odd servers, despite me living a mile from their ISP Server farm. You dont have BT by anychance? or one of the BT supported ISP's like Bun? if so..dump them..they are attrocious for gaming online.

with freeserve at the mo which after many years of playing counter-strike i have found to give the best pings. signed up with uk online this morning but exactly the same problems. had a look at jahbulan's post which says crap modems rather than crap isp's have been his problem. mines an external creative blaster (so a pretty good one if a few years old), but my mate whos on isdn gets similar problems with dropping off line.
connection aside, the dropping off wouldnt be too bad if when i was online i could actually do something. from what others have said this is probably not my connection at fault. the only other thing i can think of is my gfx card. a geforce2 which it says is supported, tried running with the newest nvidia drivers and the windows drivers and no luck. tried my hercules4000xt but that wont even show me the log in screen... :(
cant think what else i can do to make this game work... please help cos its going to be a shame to have to leave because of such bizarre issues that may be easily solved. thanks again jim

You have mentioned that your modem is one of the "external" blaster modems - I am led to understand that if this is the USB version, then this is almost certainly the cause of your trouble. I have read something about this modem somewhere else on another FPS online gaming site, with people moaning about it there.
Given that a change of ISP hasn't sorted the problem, it may well be the modem in this case. Particularly if you notice the connection dropping at times when you estimate the CPU load is heavy.
The other thing I've noticed about EVE (having monitored it as part of my quest to resolve my own "random disconnect" crisis) is that you could probably run it on a 33k connection - the traffic to and from the client is really minimal compared to virtually all other MMORPG's I've seen. For instance, a 1 hour EVE session might see you casually download 1mb of data, and upload maybe 200kb - no sweat for a 56k modem, where you could do about 20mb in an hour otherwise.

modem isnt usb, its, erm, the other sort, kinda looks like printer port but smaller, got 2 of the sockets on the back of my tower. thing is, no matter how bad my connection i should still be able to see myselfmove and bring up info screens (no matter how slowly or how many crashes) but i cant do anything.
think i'll have to try taking pc round to my bros house and try it on his cable just to see whether it is the connection at fault or something else.
you heard of similar problems to mine on your travels through eve-problem-land?

If your modem goes through the com port, then it sounds OK to me. I would suspect your problem isn't actually to do with the connection itself, as my problem meant the game would work pretty much fine (i.e. screens loading quickly, game working OK apart from sound very glitchy), but would disco every 10 mins or quicker. Yours sounds more like a memory / hard drive problem.
Some other things to check:
- make sure there aren't loads of other apps resident in the background (I can give more details of how to fix this if necessary).
- Check your swapfile. Is there a lot of hard disk thrashing going on? I don't know the specific details of EVE because I haven't been monitoring this element of it, but MMORPG's tend to like a nice, big swapfile - I use a 2mb permanent one and it does the trick. -----------------------------------------------

no other apps running, bout a page worth of services but think mostly essential stuff.
got 13gb free HD space, not sure about swap file. is that the same as virtal memory (thats set to 560-980mb). if not how do i set swap file? (on xp btw)
would have thought stuff like that may cause a prob if ive been playing for a while bt even if i just boot up, connect and log on i cant do anything... cheers jim

I'm playing in Eve on my Nvidia GeForce 2 400mx and that works, even though it lags som times. (Tried it on a P4 2.4ghz with awesome gfx and that worked superb). So, it shouldn't be your gfx that's causing the problems...

Jahbulon.. i have the same problem as you did at the moment.. i get into eve and after about a few mins of flying i disco.. sometimes i last up 2 half an hour if i am not at peak times ( when my isp is less buisy i suppose ) and i also disco sometimes befor o even get into space( after i select caracter).. I play lots of online games like IL2 sturmovik and Counter Strike and i dont have any ping problems ( as far as the ping read in the game that is ) witch is usuly about 200-250 witch isnt bad for 44k.
just wondering what ISP you have swapped to.. I am in the UK btw and i have freeserve anytime unlimited. 15 squids a month unlimited flat rate jobbie;) just wondering who u think is a good isp provider.
currently EVE and Planetside are the only games witch are disoing me like this :(. I have fiddled with my settings and that hasnt helped:(.. strange thing is when i am actuluy IN EVE there is hardly any lagg what so ever but i just get that anoying "click" as i disco every few mins :(

I'm using NTL's service, which is OK apart from the 2 hour cut off point. Like you, though, FPS's tended to work OK with my old PCI modem - it's just online MMORPGS that disco on me.
I think you're also having the same problem that I was having. When EVE was quieter it tended to work better, possibly because the internet connection was quicker anyway. Check your modem. -----------------------------------------------

I can't guarrantee you it'll work but I had exactly the same problem (and Greece isn't famed for it's superb ISPs...) and now I haven't experienced a disconnect in a total of 8 gaming hours. My ISDN modem is also connected by serial port and NOT USB. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I must say, the geforce2 was great in its time, I had it running eve in beta and had severe framerate problems!
I upgraded to a leadtek card (geforce 4 ti4200) and i have a 110% improvement! everything is super slick now.
Not sure if this will resolve your issue but its definetly something to think about.
