The typical new player these days is just too far behind in my opinion. The critical phase for customer retention in this game is around the first week I would think. Right when they are beginning to know whats going on, and beginning to figure out what they wanna do in the game. This is the same time when they start seeing just how long those goals are going to take, and for many people its extremely overwhelming.
Don't get me wrong, im not asking for every new player to start with 10 mil SP, bit perhaps something a bit milder.
Maybe some noob missions that would allow them to get a few basic skills that every character will eventually need up a few levels by doing some agent missions set up just for that.
Maybe 5 or 6 missions that would give them frigate 3 of their race, the ability to fly a basic hauler, or some rudimentary gun skills.
As an older (10 months) player, honestly, I wouldn't mind it at all. I also wouldn't feel like I was setting up friends for dissapointment when they started Eve.
Im interested about how other people would feel if new players got a leg up these days.
Discuss!
Hmm, just realized that this would be a dream for alt suiciders and trial account griefers =/
Well, ASSUMING there was a way around that, what would you think?
did you get disapointed when you started playing eve?
from what i can remember eve was sooo huge and so manny new things, the first week i spent just exploring the diffrent things in eve and didnt realy think much about what skills other players had and what i didnt have.
I think the new players manage just fine as it is.

Yes exactly. Maybe it's because you feel sad for the people who start because you think they got nothing and have nothing to be proud of. However i never forgot how happy i was when i got my merlin. Seriously, my corpmate said something like WTFPWNDBBQ when he saw it and he was just in his Bantam. Later on he was the first to get a miner II. What i mean to say is that you don't need to feel sorry for them cuz for a newb there's enough to like about this game, even tho you think they're nothing but garbage.

One of the overarching principles with EVE (indeed it was featured in the initial trailers) has always been that if you want power in this game you must get out there and earn/take it. Beyond a starter ship and the skills your character has when it starts, I'm of the opinion that nothing should be given to the newbie player, beyond things like agent rewards, etc.
That first week SHOULD be a mountain that people must climb over. It SHOULD weed out the impatient among us. It SHOULD NOT coddle everyone, because suddenly once they're out of the newbie phase and things aren't being handed to them, they will think the game's too harsh. School of hard knocks? Sure. But they'll appreciate the things they earn more than if you hand it to them.

what would be nice is a better tutorial program that explains to players the basics of what skills are for what and why.
Also something that tells them to look a the atributes of any certain piece of equipment to see how to use it and what skills are required to be able to use it.
Cant tell you how many players mine their butts off to buy a couple mining drones when they start then find they cant mine with them nor figure out how they are supposed to go into the ship or where to get the skills to use them ect. And thats just one thing.

As a noob, I'd just like to say "no thanks" to the offered bone.
Eve has a learning curve (which I can't at the moment see the end of), and there is a lot of fun to be had at the lower "levels" of Eve. Like being pleased with two miner I's, and then a couple of weeks later being pleased with 5 xecls on a cpu-souped up cat.
There are aspects of the game I can't really contend with yet: strip mining, 0.0 space, pirates in anything below 0.7 and so on. That's all still to come.
Feel free to send me ISK (for the orphanage) but please don't nerf my early formative days in Eve.

Sounds like the majority of people like it the way it is.
I was just curious.
Was a very good discussion by all! :)
