Some thoughts on 'Hilmar's Apology'.
LINKAGE
Quote:Last night the CEO of CCP unleashed a political masterstroke and a heartfelt plea to the EVE community all at once. The politics of business: making a stand as a man, with the gesture of an apology, but without the recognition of root causes and concerns. Commendable and smart in many ways, but is the mere gesture sufficient?

I would love to believe it is sincere, but somehow i get the feeling that i'm being passified while they finish whatever they already had planned. ...........
I hope this overall experience will open CCP's eyes and show them that their players really love EvE and want it to stay "more or less" a space game. I know that side things lik WiS and PI and Dust are a complement to the game but the focus should always be about you in space vs. the great unknown.

I'm still very much on the fence, "action not words" and all that but for an Icelandic guy to admit "I messed up, we need to rethink this" that is something that never happened in modern history, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'll keep a keen eye on what actually happens and if they learned from all of this by NOT rushing out half arsed content but rather take small baby steps of well wrought improvements. Really the last thing we need is CCP to do is go "QUICK DO SOMETHING, DON'T CARE WHAT IT IS BUT LOOK BUSY!" and fart out incomplete, uninspired and mediocre quality stuff... again.
CCP needs to take it slow and do it right on the first try, no "that'll do" or "we'll get back to that later". Expect and plan for iteration but don't use it as an excuse to introduce incomplete stuff. Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude. |

Public apologies are never easy. I imagine Hilmar spent hours rewording his statement.
It is extremely easy to insulate yourself from reality, cocooning yourself in an ivory tower when you run large and complex businesses.
I pray other CEO's around the world start to re-evaluate their vision and realize they have a community-based obligation to balance service with profit. Greed tends to be short-sighted. Greed with a strong leaning toward improving service and community leads to higher revenue potential.
It is more difficult to balance service and profit, otherwise more companies would follow that path. Not to bring RL into this thread, but it's like the excuse banks in the US use for the new fees (government regulation). Truth is they lost revenue streams, have shareholders that demand ever increasing profits, so they took the EASY route and added more fees. If only they had been able to redefine realistic revenue goals in this economy and used their imagination to improve revenue flow and service. Y'know, like loaning money to credit worthy applicants or helping their clients restructure home loans? Quick fees are short-sighted.
Now, if only the CEO of the company I work for would follow Hilmar's lead....
I look forward to measuring his, and CCP's, improvement.
Edit: I forgot to add that it was a nice BLOG post. The CSM project is an extension of player representation. Sort of like a loose republic of player representation. I commend all CSM involvment, time and money to help advocate for the players. I don't always agree with CSM stances, but I respect the burden you all have chosen to carry. |

My personal impression of the whole "Incarna" and Incarna affair thing is that they go SW NGE route but not all at once. Slowly step by step change of gameplay and change of player base. Just a personal impression. |

Public apologies are never easy. I imagine Hilmar spent a lot of money on public relations and damage control word smithing experts to write the words to put into his mouth.
I'll be watching what they do, but from a very safe distance where all three of my accounts are expired (one already has done so, the other two should be within the next two weeks).
I'll be with more than two dozen other former Eve Online players over there in SWTOR setting up shop for the next year or so and CCP will have to pull off some kind of hat trick to get our attention and lure us back. I have no faith they will be able to do so while Hilmar is still the CEO.
Even in his apology he is sticking his head in the sand in regards to the players reaction to the NEX store and the ludicrousness of their pricing structure. He still thinks they have shat a pile of gold plated turdlets in regard to CQ, all the while nobody has it turned on since it runs like crap on the majority of computer systems.
Hilmar is still completely disconnected from the reality of why the bean counters have been crying to him about the dropping subscription numbers. The fail-cascade will continue to occur as long as he sets the tone for the direction his company is heading. |

I like what he is saying. I at lease believe he is sincere in his blog. I really would like to see his vision of EvE but it has to be done with sensible steps and without ruining the game we love right now.
A comment made in the blog regarding the current direction of the MMO industry and the introduction of MT's makes me think that CCP is considering a Free To Play model in the future. Is this possible especially considering that most people use alts and a free to play model will explode the number of alts out there?
Quote:Though the introduction was clearly flawed, our plans for virtual goods are intended to make your playing experience better, not to disrupt it. From a strategic perspective, we had to take these first steps because monthly subscriptions are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. The culture of online gaming is changing, just as the notion of digital ownership did with music. If we donGÇÖt evolve our technology, our game design and our revenue model, then we risk obsolescence, and we just canGÇÖt allow that to happen to EVE or to our community.
I am also quoting the following for truth. What he says here is dead on.
Quote:For the same reasons, IncarnaGÇöthe real one with actual meaningful gameplay in itGÇö will be a big step towards the future. For an experience that relies so much on emergence and human interaction, itGÇÖs remarkable that itGÇÖs taken us this long to actually put a face on it. Once Incarna hits its stride, EVE will be more personal, and thus more accessible to general audiences. Visual self-expression in a virtual setting is a core psychological component of gaming; most people need to see their avatars, or something vaguely humanoid, or else they donGÇÖt connect with the game. We were behind the curve and it needs to be addressed for the sake of EVEGÇÖs longevity. We have the technology. Now we need time to add the content that will bring more meaning to the gameplayGÇöagain, without disrupting the space combat simulator that many of you are, or at least were, very much in love withGÇöand without delaying crucial improvements that this core experience desperately needs.

Why does this sound like a direct run at the Wow crowd? Going newb friendly will certainly bring in additional revenue, but I think the current playerbase might not care for it as much.

Speak for yourself. I think we can still have our hardcore play in EvE while allowing the game to cater to the general audience. We CAN have both. |

Thank you. We spend quite a lot of time trying to keep things moving forward. Despite attempts to paint the CSM as a whole as representing one 'bloc' or type of gameplay, we're really quite diverse on our opinions.
Cipher Jones wrote:I am so glad the CSM don't ***** publicity by making multiple threads about something someone else did.
People make threads for lots of reasons. Some are better than others. Internet forums are like that.
Cipher Jones wrote:I am so glad the CSM asked for my vote, but never once asked me for my opinion on anything eve related.
Well... umm... we just met! Hi, I'm your friendly CSM Rep. How can I help you? I mean, I tend to respond to most of the EVE mails I get but you've never contacted me and you don't really expect us to contact every player of EVE personally, do you?
Cipher Jones wrote:I am so glad that every time I call you the publicity whoring politicians you are I get a like.
I didn't run for CSM because I wanted or needed attention (that'd be Mittens and he's pretty open about it). I've had quite a lot of that over the years that I've been involved with EVE, some of it unwanted. I did this because I've spent 8 years playing the game, three and a half of it working at CCP on the game itself as a designer, so my motives for wanting the game to improve and evolve go much deeper than attention whoring.

Why do you believe this? This isn't even supported by what's been said in the past few dev blogs, much less on my CSM blog or statements by other CSM members. Our talks with CCP are pretty diverse in terms of trying to get them to stop making space dolls and focus more on spaceships. It's not going to happen overnight, but we aren't exclusively focused on any one area that I'm aware of. Seleene's Sandbox - My Blog, where I say stuff. Follow Seleene on Twitter |

It all depends on if he follows through or not. It is obvious that CCP was scared by something whether that be a drop in subscriptions or the backlash reaction of the players on the forums. Either way...it is down to us "Watching what they do, not what they say." at this point. Hopefully this Winters expansion will affirm this blog and trust in CCP can be restored. We will see. |
