I'm looking into my options on my new maller. (lost me old one) and I'm trying to decide what I should go for. heavy mod beams look to be the best overall, unless the person your fighting has em wards and/or thermal barriers, in which case you might as well use civilian gats. Gauss seem to be a good idea, not as good as energy overall, but one is not limited to thermal and EM damage. Projectile are much worse overall, but are 80 power less than the other two choices and use considerably less CPU, so one could use 5 650mm scouts for less CPU and 120 less power than 4 gauss or HMBs. They also leave the cap for other things such as shield hardeners or shield boosters. What is your opinion/experience?

ah sorry thourght it was another npc pirate hunter case hehe i was half asleep :)
ive never tried proj so all i will say is hybrids or a mix of both proj and hyb
hmm you could also just rig up for speed and defence armour sheild wise and use a ship scanner "do they work " and find out the layout of the othere ship
then a quick run to station switch gear

laser is the easiest weapon to counter, your most dmg is in em, that's just too easy to get resist on one dmg type......

Even if you're in a battleship it will take you minutes to break down the shield of my cruiser if you're using lasers.

That is my biggest reservation when it comes to using HMBs for PvP. They are only EM and thermal damage, and if you want long range, one will do mostly EM damage.

Did it occur to you that rails are just thermal and kinetic?
I mean, laser sure, EM only at range most likely, but the thermal part is as easily resisted from Rails.
So its a matter of choice.. EM ward, or Thermal, or EM+Thermal+Kinetic.
Basically if we forget about the radio crystal, lasers and hybrind are just as easy to get resist against. Also, dont forget that you already have an average resistance of 30% vs rails whereas average resistanve vs lasers is 9% if using multifrequency, 0% if using radio. If you come up vs a guy that almost knows what hes doing and has 3 wards of each good kind, EM will still be the best way to break down a shield.
However, if you come up against me, youd better be prepared to hit me in my weak spot ;)

So its either go laser, trash people w/o em/thermal hardeners, and do nothing against people with them, (ditto with hybrid, only different hardeners) or go projectile and not do much damage versus anyone. I get it =)

The answer is "Yes".
You'd do better mixing and matching weapon types depending on your skills and combat style
