We should be able to fly around the atmospheres on planets, and see some cities, bases, etc. Planet spaceports, etc. This would make the "worlds of eve" much more interesting, and seeing architecture of the various factions. I am not saying we can walk on the planets, but to see what each ones would look like.. populations, etc.
Just a thought

would only make sense if there were stations you can dock at on planets... else you'll go once in a year, and I don't think it's worth the effort to program something like that without any function ... |

for instance, instead of having all off the stations that are in a solar system be in space orbiting the planets and moons, have some be on the surfaces of the planets and moons.

Also after some time after planet land based spaceports are working say 1-2 years to make sure all the bugs are fixed introduced player made mining ouposts that act very much like pos also ships flying in atmosphere get a speed and manouverability penalty like 75% mainly becase ships are made for spaceflight not atmosperic flight

I like the idea but the others are right. There has to be some point to going there.
Of course entering a atmosphere to help hide from and enemy might be a interesting tactic :) --------------------------------------------------- mom'n'pop hasn't made me a cool sig yet :)

the point of it is to make the world of eve- and the socieites more realistic looking, to make them feel more alive.

Planet surfaces and in-atmospheric flight seems to be somewhere in the development process. A screenshot leaked as early as winter 2004, and it has been confirmed in devchats. Not sure if it's Kali material, or further down the road.
The coolest way to implement it would be if it was procedurally generated geography and textures, like Frontier: First Encounters had already in 95 (but preferably somewhat less "chunky" )

and, it would make the ratings of eve's already prestigious reputation of beautiful environments be more so. It is exctiign tp think about, and would be awesome if it became a reality!

Planets could be used to build bases/colonies on them to harvest/mine goods, such as trade goods and minerals.
We do moon mining, why dont we mine planets?
I agree highly we need access to planets it would add in huge advantages and more content, and give you better control over systems etc

So when are we going to be able to buy the Lexx? Or the Foreshadow/Megashadow/Gigashadow (not sure which would be best). Or the Death Star? Maybe the Lexx will be Jovian and the Foreshadow will be Amarrian and the Death Star will be Caldari (you KNOW it looks just like something the Caldaris would build, admit it). The Gallenteans can just wipe out a planet with their stinky French armpits and their snails.
The Minmatars...um...well...they can get a shaman to animate Aphoxema G's Lord Plush and give him super duper evil planet destroying powers. ___________________________________________ ^^^***---All things serve the Beam---***^^^ |

Think POS guns are nasty, wait till planetary batterys start nailing your dread for 15k a shot.
It could take planetary research stations to make tech 3-6 stuff. Mmmmm, tech 3 version of the Harpy!

Just check back a couple of pages, this is suggested every second day.
Just answer this - After you have looked at this bit of eye candy a couple of times, would you really care?

The idea I hard would mean less work resoures wise, so that it actually has a chance of being implemented was this...
Scanning of planets surfaces. This would allow you to see it's contents, hunt for anything unusual. Old structures, artifacts, rare ores, items generated by missions. Then you would send your "drones" down to the surface to retrieve.
This gives us an expanded interaction in the EVE-verse and makes it easier for the developers to implement. Having to make planet surface assets, etc could take forever and complicate things. ;)

Well, instead of a +100,000 planetary or lunar environments never being used (submarine or dirigible style), they'd have to be limited to 25 or 100 or so, depedning on their complexity.
Personally, I don't really see the need of planets acting like anything more than overgrown Starbases or governmental player-built stations.
I've seen the images from the proof-of-concept vids, but all the same, it sounds like EVE2 content.

Not that I'm really into this at all, but one thing struck me though...
Hope I never ever have to witness a crow tear through the skies of a planet!
In case ccp takes eve down this path, I surely hope that they draw a line between what is a space craft and not and introduce a hybrid class to be meant to interface between the vacuum of space and the atmosphere of a planet.

This brings me to a concept well known to MOO3 fans. The advent of system ship whereas they were able to fit more items but were incapable of having jump drives (albeit it actually travelled between systems). Not sure how it could work but I am sure there could be intrastellar ship designs if they actually made system defense something worthwhile. Worth a discussion.
