Interesting question here. I find it intriguing we have a whole universe revolving around us and yet there is a difference in play.
I admit I don't roleplay (in the sense of an alternate personality) only because I find it easier not too. But how many of you immerse yourself (call it lose yourself) in the Eve Galaxy and become your character?
Online do you become your toon or is he just your own persona?

I roleplay myself ...or something.
I will not be like my real persona when I post or play the game.
When I am on ts and talking to my corpmates I get alot more like my real persona and for example find myself starting to talk about Rod in the third person as a result. Mostly seems to be subconscious thing tho.
So I do roleplay, altho it's a light form of it. I take into account what kind of reputation I build up with this character, and that does not always reflect my real life person, so that makes it roleplay I guess. _______________________________________________

hehe half and half. I enjoy the roleplaying aspect of the game.. Though I dont think eve is as immersive as some of the other RPG's ive played. But then im more used to bastard swords etc than swishy ships

I try too. After failing to find any corps to have alts in that RP'ed good. I just gave up and now focusing on my solo RP. The game itself is perfect to do your own little world but it seems people just arn't intrested in RP. But that's what happens when you play games that have heavy pvp. Most roleplayers are weak and don't want to die for they die in real life. So when I'm on, I'm in my little pirate RP theme I guess. You don't know how much it would mean to me if someone just took a system and turned it into a minture world of 2 corps dueling it out PoS vs PoS all RP style with legit roles and GM's to go with it. But that will never happen.

In my opinion, EVE offers incredible potential for roleplay, but people these days don't like to read (the chronicles, hell, some people seem to think of pods as emergency capsules! Silly people *shakes head*). Apparently, they don't like to think for themselves either...
Im part of a Gallente RP corp, and we're trying to find our roleplaying nature, but this is a game with many numbers in it and those tend to be more important in the end. Soon however, we'll be in character a whole lot more than we are today.

Edited by: Matthew on 25/05/2005 12:06:33 -snipped out random post. Forums being veery strange today for me!-
Anyway, what this post was supposed to be was to say that I roleplay myself, in so much as me RL and me in-charachter share the same values and attitudes. But those are realised slightly differently based on context, and I keep in-game, in-game....an in-game insult offends my char, not me in RL, for example.

I do roleplay slightly, for example, I generally dislike amarrians unless they prove thir worth, and i'm heavily opposed to the Gallente Federation as well as the Amarr Empire, i also see myself as being a loyal pirate and brother in arms to [SNIGG].
Verone's character, personality and temperment, as well as his morals are pretty much the same as the man behind him. Very little differs from in game to real life, so if you hate me in game, bring your boxing glove to the fanfest this year
Apparently a couple of RL people i know who have seen my appearence in game, and know me outside of eve, have said that apart from the pink hair, i actually kind of resemble him
I bloody hope not.
At the end of the day, although Verone is an in game character, nothing differs from the real life person behind him, in terms of his mental state, and his views and morals on life.
Did i also mention that i don't really have pink hair?
(Although i probably will come the fanfest in october )

roleplay?
Which game are you talking about?
might be a StarWars thing if you would asked me!
when a game was not design from start for roleplay...
Since corps are made of individuals and those individuals are from different races...
Since when you fly ships that are unable to identify enemies in space...
Since you are from one race can't fire oppon other player of other race in the know DMZ of "empire". Unless that you wish to meet the useless Concord.
Since the races npcs don't even are inteligent enough to distinguish a bean from a byte...
Since the "news" (lovely texts BTW buta complete time wasted) are just for readers. Because simple don't cause major efects on the game environment.
roleplay in this game simple is a joke.
Get other good game where you play against your computer and you get better roleplay than EVE. Just because the game was designed for that.
Appologies for those who are in corps that say that are roleplay! In fact they aren't because there are no environment to do so.
So good luck to find that "holy grail" on EVE.
BTW I do roleplay
I created my own role and I play as I want and when I want. That's the beauty of EVE... something else dictated by others wouldn't simple go well!
So I really don't care if Caldary are fked due to Gallente or if Minmatar cleaned the sheets of Amarrian's beds after the service... Anything else is just a nice text (well writen BTW) for few bookworms that have time to read them.

I don't role-play at all in EVE.
My character(s) is pretty much me through & through.
And yes, the way I am on the forums, is the way I am in RL.
However, I do not wear a flame retardant suit in RL...

To some roleplay is spelling correctly and using good grammar - and then having cyber with someone else.
To me RP is not talking about RL, I'd say anything else is fine.
People say that leet speek is OOC and not apropiate, I disagree, I'd just call that RPing a space pirate, it's not like real pirates were renowned for their excellent eloqution.
Others think that not knowing all the backstory and current affairs in Eve makes a crap RPer, but they are just playing the ignorant we have in society.
I think we all roleplay, intentional or not, the only time it breaks out of this is referring to RL subjects. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

Well, come over to see Ushra'Khan and CVA fight sometime. We roleplay (which is only, basically, keeping in character, not rolling dice etc) and kick the living ****zle out of each other on a daily basis.
Its great fun. Im sure the locals enjoy a bif fight spectacle along with the jibing in local. -

We are all roleplaying at different levels imo. Even someone who calls themselves a merc or pirate is still acting out a role. I do like to keep some form of character immersion which makes the universe seem more 'alive' to me. ie, not speaking about out of game stuff too much.
The only full-on roleplay corp I know these days is Encina Technologies (ex Paratwa Ra). They have their own culture, language and try to stay in character 100%.
Famine, Paratwa was around since beta until a couple of months ago. Shame you missed us.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

I find Eve a great platform to be the opposite type of person than you are in RL. In fact I can't see the point in being the same. In RL I'm a honest family man, in Eve I make a point of never earning a honest isk.....

Yeah, I'm pretty much that way in real life too.

- although we're sometimes welcomed with some "WTF? Get out of my local with your roleplaying cr4ps, you pussies" or "? I'm not a slave, I'm an alt"
anyway, I think I always roleplay in Eve (just not under TS maybe - that's harder, and my corpmates would probably mute me quickly). that doesn't means I'm a hardcore rper, nor do I know the whole background perfectly: I just stay "in character", and SanaÙn developped month after month a "real" personnality, largely different of mine.

CVA has a little portion of there alliance that only seems to roleplay on the forums. Rest is just normal usage of peoples to fight a war that has no real backing. So I don't consider them RPer's :)

There is no way any can say that thier character is not directly who they are. No I dont mean that you are a mugger in real life. I am saying you know right and wrong in RL and in Eve you let go of the good. Each side of the keyboard has is results. Most people choose to perserve thier freedom in RL. In Eve they choose to let it go. So being a pirate in Eve only resembles what you could accept in RL but choose not to.
I reason that I cant even think of doning any harm to those in RL or Eve except for self defense.
I believe we are only in RL who we are because society needs us to be! There are rules in RL that do not apply to Eve. That does change who you are but allows you to become who you can be! Eve is more than a game its a test of a greater impact of society. --------------------------

I roleplay a mysterious tactician and master strategist who can infiltrate any space, meet many contacts, and negotiate many treaties and concords whilst evading detection and eluding blockaders as easily as stepping over the morning holoreels while he carries load after load of robotics supplies from hither to yon and generally acing all missions he sets his mind to in a manner betraying vast confidence and self assurance in a long and drawn out run on sentence just to make a point.

I roleplay and its a lot of fun. in real life im a very nice guy. But online well im sort of developing an evil streak, the good thing about games like eve is that you can live out your darkest fantasys and live a different life. My fantasys are to own tons of slaves and be an evil pirate one day.
Till then im developing my persona
