The idea behind this game promotes large scale warfare with a great deal of potential for support ships, however the game is lacking so of the key components necessary for support ships to take on a decent role.
Currently support ships include: Missile Boats (providing anti-missile cover) Command and Control Boats (passing targets and effecting minor shield assistance)
I am suggesting further diversifying this set of ships:
Command and Control Ship: High Armour, Structure, and Shields; Cruiser class; 4 High Power slots (1 Turret, 0 Missile), 5 Medium, 3 Low Power; Minimal Cargo Hold, 0 Drone Capacity; High CPU, High Power. 5% Bonus to targetting speed of selected vessel per cruiser level. This will allow for a ship that while big, bulky and slow can still effect a minor defense of itself while being able to pass targeting information effectively to other ships in the fleet. Essentially the space equivilent of an AWACS aircraft.
Repair Ship: 3 High Power (1 Turret, 0 Missile); 4 Medium Power; 5 Low Power Slots; 800+ Cargo Capacity; High CPU; Mid Power; 1000 Drone Space; Cruiser Class. This would require the creation of some modules such as a remote hull repairer, remote structure repairer, and light and medium repair drones. In order to ofset the unbalancing effect this could have I suggest minerals need to be stored in the cargo hold of said ships so theat they have materials to effect repairs. It helps scale their usefulness while also making them an especially prized target by pirates as the minerals contained within could be worth a great deal.
High Speed Surveyor: (1 High Power, 1 Turret), 3 Medium Slots, 3 Low Power Slots; High Speed; High armour; 5% Bonus per frigate level to survey scanning speed; frigate class. A small lightly armed ship capable of surveying high risk belts while minimizing the pirate risk to the player. I'm not of the opinion that a ship shoul dhave no risk exploring these belts however a fast frigate with appropriate armour and repair systems should be able to survive entry into the belt, and be able to maintain enough speed that there is a moderate to decent chance for surival as well as getting information back to their corporations. This should also help eliminate the cases of people exploring pirate infested areas in escape pods because the pirate don't treat them as a valid target.
