Hey all.
I have a dilemma. I am primarily a missioner and am extremely well skilled in BC and below hulls, but getting started on BS sized guns.
I flew a heavy missile tengu for a long time in 4's for various faction corporations. Once that got mind numbingly boring, I switched to HAM Tengu for level 4's with great success.
Now, much later in life, I have decided that I like laser boats, and I want to mission in Amarr space (just got my Imperial Navy standing over 5.0)
I did quite a bit of research and settled on the Nightmare as my hull of choice possibly the Paladin at a later date. I have most of the elite fitting certificates, and all gun support skills to IV, can tank armor or shield equally well.
Here's where my dilemma is:
I had to warp out of Blockade against Blood Raiders. Like, 4 times. Tracking disruption killed my range, heavy/medium neuts were owning my cap, and my drones were dying trying to kill the disruptors.
Most of the level 4's I have done so far, the 'Mare destroyed in a very short time.
Please help! I really like my Nightmare but I am new to laser boats / battleships and need some tips!
Also if you want to provide good fits please do so, but bear in mind I have T1 guns for another 30 days or so. I do have IN Tachs on my 'Mare. Have to use Tachs since I cannot use Scorch in pulses of course.
Finally, if I'm just too underskilled for Nightmare now, that's fine, but please after you finish flaming me, provide suggestions on what Amarr ship I should fly in 4's!
I'd link my fit but I really need to go to bed, i'll try and type if out quickly.

IN heat sink IN heat sink IN heat sink tracking enhancer II tracking enhancer II
3x semiconductor memory cell I
again, all the 4's I've done were easy so far, but blockade kicked my teeth in, so i also worry about some of the other harder missions like worlds collide etc
Thanks for the help! Sorry for crappy typing skillz, pretty tired. |

Use Pulse Lasers with Scorch. Take out enemies at range.
If I recall correctly, the Nightmare is not a "brawler" type ship. It's not designed to take large amounts of punishment up close for very long. Use range to your advantage and take out ships, starting with frigates, before they get in range. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

This is a fully T2 version of what I use. You will have cap issues with the T2 Tachyons, but if you swap out to faction or meta4 you will be fine.
The Nightmare is a (slightly hardened) glass cannon with a tracking bonus. As such you want at least 4 Heat Sinks (faction or GTFO). Tracking computers are vastly better than tracking enhancers, but use a mid slot. Consider 2 tracking computers and swapping the TE for DC2 to make up for lost tank.
Mega Pulse Laser IIs are OK, but you will get more DPS at longer ranges with the Tachyons... and the Tachs will hit things at 20kms quite well. |

Your fit is fine. TD ships are hellaciously annoying, but your Nightmare can deal with them. Choose the closest on and set your Hammerheads on it (after clearing anti-drone aggro in the normal way), then move directly towards it to reduce transversal; once you get inside it's orbit distance, it will move away from you. Your tachs should have enough falloff to do reasonable DPS even with optimal reduced to only a few KM.
PS you might find a Target Painter to be more effective than that 4th tracking mod. Putting +30% sig onto your target will increase your effective tracking much more.
PPS I assume that you have a rack of +5% laser/turret hardwirings, yes? MatrixSkye Mk2: "Remember: You consent to unconsensual PVP the moment you press the "Undock" button." |

This is bad advice. Tachymare is way better than Pulsemare for PvE. MatrixSkye Mk2: "Remember: You consent to unconsensual PVP the moment you press the "Undock" button." |

Just a tip to really anyone who flys a nightmare. If you can fit/use a http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Large_Energy_Discharge_Elutriation_I it will help you a ton with the cap issues. I have T1 Tachs on my mare and its cap stable with the shield booster off. |

I did blockade once in my nightmare. It was...a nightmare for me. The TD was making my guns useless against anything. Now, i simply decline this mission. I did vengeance yesterday and G-O-D O_O what CCP did to the sansha? ONE TD was enough for making my guns missing half the time a BS 40km from me O_O

I wonder how bad things are these days. Nightmare can easily hit from its max locking range with decent DPS (read: good enough for cruiser rats, that's with standard and Range'd TCs), I wonder if warping @ 70 km will do any good. Or, say, re-warp @ 100 if some wave will spawn too close (and it will). There's a chance that TDs won't hit you from 90km...
I'm yet to recieve this mission past-change. Before worked just fine for me. Though Pre-retri I could eat 4 TDs and still hit in faloff, so dunno... |

It would seem that they changed how NPC tracking disruption works. Instead of simply reducing optimal, and leaving falloff untouched, it affects both. I was recently running missions in sleipnir, and my usual 30-40 km range was being cut down to 500 optimal, and a little over 4000 falloff. As to the problems you are having with the nightmare, perhaps asking one of your corpmates to come along and help clear it would be a good solution. I can;t think of much other than that, because your fit looks lik it should be able to deal with most missions without issue.

I love the NM and haven't had any problems... I keep my guns split.. each gun will insta pop frigs and even some cruisers. This allows you to burn through the frigs quciker than you can target them.
4 T2 tach's Use the close range ammo for anything closer than 20km, it gets a bonus and you will hit most cruisers 15-20km tractor beam auto target,
x-large sb, think I have a pith c or maybe kaikio.. I generally buy which ever is cheaper at the time large cap booster em ward 2 x invuln sensor booster SBA
3 x IN heats 2 x TE
T2 termal rig 2 x Cap rigs
I carry a set of T2 hobs or warriors.. depends on missions and some sentries to help out.. barely get to use lights and generally forget to drop the sentries.. so don't really get to use them. |

disregard most of the advice in this thread. you can easily outrange the tracking disruptors in most mission, including the blockade. just warp in at 100 and kill everything with xray or ultraviolet.

It's not the NM's fault. The new and improved npc TD makes all turret boats unusable, not just NM. Wait until it's fixed - if it's fixed. This is a bad time to go Amarr.
Btw, npc td has unlimited range. If you're on grid, it's on you. Kiting won't help. Standings Improvement Service https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=19454 |

If you dont have Amarr and Caldari BS V, dont fly a NM If you cant fit T2 Pulse, dont fly a NM If your character is from late 2010-2012, dont fly any pirate BS If you spend 1.4 Bill on a pirate BS you should be willing to spend the same amount on the fit.
Have a nice day. |

Well, I can do the serpentis blockade really easy in a tachmare... I still get TD'd from cruisers 130km away... which I think is complete BS, so I'd imagine that the BR version also had ridiculously long range ewar.
In the case of Serp, I use 3x range scripted faction SeBos, I can usually lock past 80km even when being sensor damped. Its my understanding that SeBos and Sensor damps are both stacking penalized with each other. I wonder how viable it would be to do something similar in Amarr space, but stay at range with 1-2 TEs (for range) and 4-5 TCs (scripted for range/tracking, as needed). If you are careful with the triggers, I'd imagine you could deal with the TDs - or at least with TC and TE + Aurora, you'd have enough range to snipe, and with a 70-100km warpin, I'd think tracking would be sufficient. |

Maybe you should fly a CNR in those missions instead?
This may sound stupid but not all ships will perfom the same in all missions. I tend to fly different ships in different missions though I tend to favor my Raven for most of them. (for some diversity I did fly my Harpy in a level 4 "Silence the Informant" but I do not recommend to do that)
For missions like "Dread Pirate Scarlet" I fly my Rokh and I think your Nightmare will do just fine there, since you can simply bookmark the gates and warp to them at distance and snipe away.
This should also work in the "Blockade" or "Worlds Collide". |
