Edited by: Skull Bunny on 02/06/2005 09:01:36 Im very new to EVE, and con't decide between the eventual goal of using a Tempest or Raven.
Note: I'm preparing for PVP, probably pirating . I would like to be a sniper Tempest, but the Raven seems like the better overall ship.
Please voice your opionion. Kill mails of 1v1 fights are very welcome.
Happy Hunting!

if you want to snipe people into oblivion, Tempest is your ship. If you want a short-range ship thats pretty good at NPCing, go for the Raven. From what you're saying, Tempest seems the best ship for you.

You need fever skills to fly Raven so if your gunnery skills are not 5,5,5 and so on, go for Raven.
Tempest on the other hand are deadly in the right hands. To be a good Tempest pilot you NEED lv 4 Bs and lv 4 projectiles and all the other gunnery skills to lv 4, and with every kill you can put up to lv 5 (the bs, gunneryskills) the more you will like the "sniper" role.

If the Tempest is the ship of choice, then the setup I have found for sniping is as follows:
HIGH 6 1400 Howitzer 2 ??
MID 2 Tracking Comp 2 2 Sensor Booster 2 ??
LOW 6 Gyrostab 2
My questions are: Firstly, is this a decient setup? Secondly, what should fill the ?? spots? And lastly, Will that fit, or will I have to sacrifice a Gyro for a RCU?
Thanks again!
P.S. I know this isn't a setup to equip tomorrow. It requires skills, millions of them. Please understand this is an eventual setup.

It will not fit, you need at least one PDU for t1 1400mm or one RCU II for t2 1400mm.

Well for makin money in belts and on missions go for the Raven. For ganking anything smaller than a BS go for Tempest.
A raven can also sit at a gate and scramble the ships that come through and bust them. But if 2 bs jump through, you have no recourse. You die an honorable death though :) But since when to pirates care about honor?
Yes, short range Tempest with high gunnery skills is beast! Drop the AB for a target painter. Tempest is fast enough already. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

Goodbye Raven.
Or go with an xl shield booster in your meds and 5 gyro's in low and the raven is toast even quicker.

use 650s on that, or even 425s, the tracking on 425s is pretty good and its not -that- much less damage, the tracking more than makes up for it. Plus it sounds nice.
Also, raven is much much much better for 1v1 and small battles and that seems to be what you are after. Tempest is mostly devoted to fleets.

Problem with 425s is they chew through ammo. If you've got a cap booster that won't fly.

Thats not very true. In fact, in BS vs BS combat Raven will get even better. Of course, it pretty much will lose its anti-frig role, but truth said, tempest is even worse at it. Right now, PvP Raven have only 1 drawback: low speed of torps and cruises - delay damage too much and make it vulnerable to smartbombs and defenders. After so-called "nerf" missiles will get a big boost to its speed. It will make a Raven a great fighter - as if it not enouth now. -- Stories: #1 --

AC Temp > raven
I've seen these thinga rip through a raven shield as if it wasn't there
Use a shield tank, and you get lows for damage mods
Armour tank, and you get the mids for EW (sounds crazy, but it works)

Eventually the Devs are going to make it so Torps suck for frigates... so the raven will lose half its effectivness and be only good for short range PvP. The tempest on the other hand will become pretty much just as good as a raven for missions and it'll be able to do long range *or* short range PvP.
So yeah, get a tempest. It takes a lot more skill to use effectively than a raven does, though... or so I think +++
It's called "low security space" for a reason. |

Skull Bunny, both are great ships. I have maxed out Caldari skills/+all missiles at lvl5. I also fly a Tempest and just finished off training large auto cannon spec. Personally I enjoy flying the Tempest more than the Raven.
For 1v1; 6x 800tech2 or (still very strong with scouts) 2x nos (to counter the ravens nos so you can continue run mid modules after mwd to your target)
1x 100 mwd 2x target painters t2 1x warp disruptor 1x sensor booster t2
pack as many gyros in low that you can --fit a med or small armour repairer so you can fix your ship while you wait for your next victim.
and don't forget drones. I usually go for mediums as they get to the target quicker. Unless the Raven is a full tank you will chew through them in no time flat.
