I'm recently back into EVE after a 1.5 year break. When I left I was sporting a nice -6.0 security status and I now need to clamor back into the realm of the legal.
I'm planning on ratting through low-sec space and I'm trying to maximize my time. I was planning on sporting a Wolf fitted as so:
[high] 4x 150MM Autocannon II 1x Rocket Launcer II
[mid] 1x 1mn MWD 1x Medium Shield Extender II
[low] 3x Gyro II 1x Co-Processor
This should give me sufficient DPS to take out pirate BS with some tank due to the shield extender.
I, however, keep hearing about how great the T1 cruisers are since the expansion. Is there a Rupture or Stabber fit that would be competitive to the Wolf? Wouldn't going to a cruiser considerably increase the chance of PvP since aligning and warping out is going to take longer?

Depending on what rats you're after, the Wolf could be an excellent ratter for the belts. Minmatar T2 ships have very strong EM/Thermal resists, making them ideal for Sansha/Blood Raider areas. For other areas, you might be better off with another ship.
For the Wolf ratting in the proper space, you could almost just use a standard PvP fit, since your ludicrous EM/Therm resists on your armor should make a single small armor repairer enough to deal with the damage while you close range and get under the guns. For extra cap life, consider swapping to an afterburner.
Just a note, but belt ratting is often more dangerous and less lucrative than taking a bit of time to scan sites and run anomalies, but those tend to require bigger ships in lowsec.
EDIT: Wolf has 5 lows now, by the way. |

I was planning on keeping the MWD in just to close distance quickly. The fast I can close, the faster I can kill, the faster I can get to the next system to find a BS rat to up my sec status.

Does fighting in anomalies do anything for my security status? (I've never bothered with them, so I honestly I have no idea!)

The fit the way it is now, maxes out CPU and power. Is it that wasteful to not fill a slot if I'm maxing those out? I'm really just trying to max out DPS. I'm planning on avoiding engagements with other players and hoping the single shield extender and speed tanking keep me alive. |

If you are anywhere close to flying a stealth bomber I would go that route. You can pop a BS rat in a few seconds and be on your way to the next system. This also means that you can just cloak up at a gate with a camp and not worry about being tackled at all. Frankly, an assault frigate just doesn't have the DPS to pop the BS sized rats fast enough to be worth your time. http://pvpwannabe.blogspot.com/ |

@OP,
Toss a nanofiber in the lows, better speed is better than a wasted slot. A Traclking enhancer isn't bad if you have 15 CPU left, but the Worlf can live without for ratting. Most anoms would be very difficult for a Wolf, people like to use HACs and T3s to solo them, with a gang you can get away with cheaper stuff, but you have to split the reward. Killing any NPC pirate grants a security status boost, if I'm not mistaken. |

I'm weeks away from a bomber.
Hence, back to my original question - would I be better off running a Rupture with 425MM Autocannon IIs? (I'm still working on an optimal fit). |

You say you want to 'maximise your time' and then say you want to rat sec status in LOW SEC???
Good luck with that.
If you want to rat sec status 'optimally' in hostile nul then use an AB bomber with max gank like everyone is telling you. I've found that dropping below 600ms will get you hit. Non sig-bloomed 850 ms and above you are golden and won't need a tank. Let me know when u get 500dps out of a wolf.
I did the grind from -5.6 to -1.9 in a couple of days of sporadic play with only fast talk at III, covops IV and t1 torps. You COULD do it in a cruiser but yes, your safety is greatly reduced and you will most likely need to fit some kind of tank as you can't sig/speed tank as effectively.
A bomber is best and you should take this good advice.

AC wolf will need a hauler just for the ammo and if you want a fast recover in sec status you need serious dps to chew through alot of rats, best option if you have missile skills is to get a SB and go to 0.0 if you dont have missile skills get a hurricane scout yourself in a nice 0.0 system and rat there |

Agreed. A bomber is the best ship for the job. A manticore can fit a AB small shield booster, kin hardener, TP and 2 BCUs, and easily outdamage any AF whilst shooting BS rats. MatrixSkye Mk2: "Remember: You consent to unconsensual PVP the moment you press the "Undock" button." |

In that case train for a 'cane or a cyclone. Honestly, an AF or a cruiser even won't do enough damage to make the grind anywhere close to painless. At least with a BC you'll be able to rat a bit faster, but you will still have the problem with getting caught on gates. http://pvpwannabe.blogspot.com/ |

If your just going to kill the belt rats fit the Wolf for PvP. I know an Enyo is easily enough for the usual spawns so im sure a Wolf will work well too. "No one drove in New York, there was too much traffic." |

Chain systems in quiet npc nullsec (Great Wildlands is great for this) using a stealth bomber. Any other way and it will take you a painfully long time. |

I spent a couple weeks in GW with a Hound last time I wanted to get my sec status up. It worked, but I was burned out and quit the game for 6 months by the end of it...

It really shouldn't have taken you a couple of weeks, especially if that was sustained effort. I got back up to -1.9 or so in a week of intermittent bomber ratting in Venal
Pick somewhere with juicier rats next time. Those 1.85M puppies are about 25% better than the next best ones. (+0.030 vs +0.024 IIRC)
PS did you have T2 launchers? MatrixSkye Mk2: "Remember: You consent to unconsensual PVP the moment you press the "Undock" button." |

Yeah, T2 launchers with max supports in a Hound with Covops 5 etc etc etc etc. It probably had something to do with the fact that I really really hate grinding and my sec status - the preccciiiooouusssss - was slipping away from me. :(

Thanks all for the direct and pointed advice. So I've worked it out in EveMon and I'm 15 days to having a workable stealth bomber fit. (I knew I shouldn't have put off Electronics Upgrades V *sigh*).
Malcanis wrote:

That being said it's another 21 days to Torpedos V. Is having a Hound with an 'Arbalest' Torpedo Launcher going to cut it in terms of DPS? |

Yeah, Arby works fine for the Hound. You can get pretty equivalent DPS out of it, especially if you T2 damage rig it. Use damage rigs instead of ROF rigs too, because your supply of torps is limited. IIRC you can get T1 torps from the rats occasionally, but they didn't drop often enough for me not to have to make several trips back to refill torps.
-Liang
Ed: Fitting on T2 Torp launchers is a cast iron *****. That's why you can approach the T2 DPS with Arby. Normally on 5:00 -> 9-10:00 Eve (Aus TZ?) Blog: http://liangnuren.wordpress.com PVP Videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/LiangNuren/videos Twitter: http://twitter.com/LiangNuren

Hehe it definitely isn't a fun task. I just finished grinding in Stain using a cloaky loki. The rats are much juicier, it is quiet (even with PL and TEST around while I was doing it), and only took me a few hours a day for a week or so. That said I imagine the OP is pretty far from a T3, and quiet Stain can be hard to get to :) |
