As I see it, the problem is that a ship has to reach a very small area of space to travel to another system. People create bookmarks to reach that point faster and that point becomes a target of campers.
So, just do away with the gates. Replace them with jump points that are perhaps 1000km across. Just like the existing gates, each point would link to one corresponding point in another system. A button would have to be added to the interface that activates the jumpdrive.
When you warp to a jump point you would arrive at a random point inside the 1000km area and could activate your jump drive. But activating the drive might take several seconds or a minute during which a pirate could catch and kill the traveler. The large area of the jump point would make that unlikely though. So, piracy would still be possible at the jump points but would be far more difficult since the pirates could only hope to cover a small part of the enlarged jump point.
Travel times for slow ships might speed up considerably while travel times for fast ships could be slowed down some. Pods and shuttles could be made to travel very quickly.
The existing but unused jump drive skill could speed up the travel time (ū5% level) and when the Dreadnaughts come in they would travel just like all other ships.
Insta BMs wouldnĘt be necessary or useful and could be removed.
This preserves piracy, removes gatecamping, and solves the Insta BM problem.

I almost had to bash ya right away but its not as totaly obscene as it sounds, in fact I like it.
Maybe close it down a bit we still need some action & pirate need a good chance to catch ya & most important allainces have to have a chance at protecting there space.
Say 100km across maybe 200km would be nicer, best of all i would never see that cycle popup again.
Edit : Even more your also fixing the balance between instaeve today & warping away times & giving both side of the gate a new hope, ill upgrade it to impressive.
A decent blob would also spread over the zone giving better chance to kill a stabber & run. _______________________________________

I see in my mind a warp bubble 100-200km big it looks awsome, its not stopping warp but marks the warp zone is all.
Sniping would also take a hit witch is nice, he would have to choose to be 100-150km away you spawn far side of the 100-200km & say hi & leave or he comes closer covering the 100-200km & your stabber or bs hitters spawns up by him & bang hes dead, much more risk over reward. _______________________________________

You are right that 1000 km is probably too big. But I would like to see the area big enough that ships had a decent chance of getting through unless there was a fairly impressive blockade.
Perhaps 200-300 km would work fine. Part of it would depend on how long it took to make the jump. If ships had to wait one minute to jump then they would be pounded to scrap unless there was a fairly large jump bubble. If jump times were more like 15 seconds then a smaller size would work.
The number of ships that travel through a gate is inversely proportionate to the risk in traveling through it. If the chance of dying is 50% then perhaps only three or four people will attempt it. If the chance of death drops to 1-2% then hundreds of people might make the trip. So a larger jump bubble might actually mean more kills for the pirates.

A few mins delay jumping through each system...
I'd hate to see my life as a trader and courier go down the pan as my 50 jump route now takes me 24 hours realtime to complete...
