ok...what gives....these thing's just don't work, I've heard that they are only a 2D scan...is that true? if so...what's the point of them? is a solar system 2D?? NOOOOO so why make thing's scan in 2D, 3 + 12 AU probes work fine, but something's got to be done about those others. either that..or make it possible for deep space probes to get within 12 AU range.

I thought probes had sphere-shaped scan areas, so basically it will be like a pyramid where the 3 spheres overlap. The scan display is 2D, but I doubt that the probes are.

The scans aren't exactly 2D. Nor are they spheres. They scan a pancake-shaped cylinder of space 1AU thick. It's not a problem so much with 3AU probes and is a bit more tricky with 12AU ones, but I think it's just a joke with the larger ones. There's no way to get these things to work properly at that range. At 48-192AU range, even aligning yourself within the confidence limits of a 5 degree directional scan will provide well over 1AU give. The chances are high that you won't be able to get the target within your 1AU thick pancake.
While making them spheres would solve the problem, it'd make them automatically too easy to use. I suggest increasing the 1Au thickness to 1/3 of the scan probe's range. That way 3Au ones would be unaffected but the rest would work much better, but not be perfect. Some skilled scannerwork would still be required to get a target, but it would be a lot less futile than it currently is. And don't ask for dev feedback ;). If they want to reply, they can and will. Although I do hope they read this as I think my suggestion is a valid one. Perhaps I'll post it in the ideas forum.

They're still safespot busters, they're just incredibly difficult to use at long range now, making safespots outside the system created by running missions pretty damn hard to find. The only ones I've had success using are the 3AU ones at under 1AU on the scanner, always gets a positive lock.

You mean the one that m0o uses? Dunno - but that thing is damned good! -- Thread Killer

the probes should use spheres - everything else would just screw up the basic scanner
- they should get a minimum deployment distance (same size and player) - probes should be invisible on the basic scanner - a zoomable system scanner map would also help and the probe interface to a seperate scanner tab would just be sweet - gang members should be ignored while scanning
