I'm about to venture into the PvP and NPC-hunting arena and am wondering if some of the veterans could share advice for a rookie. If I go down, I would prefer for it not to be because I didn't know about one of the big Do's/Don'ts of combat. Also, what percentage of PvP players actually know what they are doing? Is Eve similar to other games where about 80% of PvP'rs are beatable by anyone who prepares properly and doesn't do anything stupid? Thanks for your advice!

Fly frigates until you learn the game mechanics solidly. Scramble for allies in bigger ships.
Once you have a strong base of skills and experience, transition into larger ships as needed.

Most pvp ers choose their fights wisely so you ll be dead in 90% of the cases.
Dont fly a ship you cant afford to loose Get enough supporting skills: all supportings at 3 before cruiser at 4 before battleship and some even at 5 asap.
Npc hunting = easy. PvP = extremely deadly if you are outnumbered or surprised or other guy hasbetter skills/fitting/ship. Most pvp ers operate in packs.
Tip stay out of .4 and lower sec if you want to avoid gatecamps which are really deadly.

Don't fly slow warping frigates or cruisers through a bottleneck between empire and whereever as they are the most likely to be blown up instantly by campers.
Only very agile frigates and battleships with instas for both will make it through alive past the smaller crews of snipers. Larger crews just warrant having more friends on either side.
If it is just you though, you options are limited. I recommend diplomacy wherever it presents itself.

I might have survived if I could get back all the time I spent trying to figure out what the warning box about targeting another player was and how to keep it from coming back up, before I was targeted and then webbed. Never got off a single shot. ================================================

Im afraid there seems to be a myth about big bad PvP's in every lowsec system in this game, which means that many people avoid lowsec out of a fear of what might happen.
This, ironically, means that most people who engage you in low sec will have been around long enough to figure out this myth is a load of bull, so they WILL know what they are doing. Thankfully many areas of lowsec are so under-populated that you will often not meet anyone for days when operating in a system that is even slightly out of the way.
A few pieces of advise before entering low-sec
Intel- Pick an area you could see your self operating in.For the next couple of days, watch it on the map while your doing your usual thing.
Watch the average player numbers, and the 'number of ships destroyed'. This will give you a good indication of how active this system is both generally and in the terms of pirate activity.
Additional, fly into the systems you plan to operate in with a shuttle.Have a look around in a near zero risk ship. Check out which systems have good numbers of belts and stations with the required services.
Look at the market in that area.Figure out what items it is cost effective to buy locally, and which items you may want to buy in bulk and transport in beforehand.
Check out local while scouting,do reserch on any corps that have multiple members in those systems. If the corp has a good rep, try striking up relations with them. Many corps performing legitimate tasks in lowsec will appretiate the extra intel you can provide, and will be happy to come to your aid in return.
For combating NPC's, learn the way your ship handels untill you dont even need to think about it. Watch your cap drain as you tank and learn how many more seconds your cap will provide for you in combat.Learn how long your ship takes to allign for a warp out. With these two pieces of info burnt into your brain you will 'know' without thinking when its time to cut and run, dropping the number of ships you loose to NPC's to almost 0.
Produce contigency plans for what to do if the system comes under pirate attack (ie fast frig with WCS and instas..if you want to play cheesy. I prefer 'reload weapons and charge' but i tend to fly drunk)
All in all have fun, and be prepaired to loose ships |

If I had got intel on the system I was going to enter (I was trying to rat hunt in low-sec) I would've been fine.
It turned out it was a pirate camp with quite a few podkills. Check the Map. ---------------------------

Check the map. Check for ship kills, podkills and pilots in space.
Check it again. Keep on checking it. Watch local.
If there is a sudden increase in numbers, take cover.

Another good piece of advice, before you start a PvP session is to stock up food and beverages, and to pay a visit to the bathroom. Never go afk while PvPing :P

Always Know Where To Run
If you're jumping into a potentially hot system, have a plan for leaving in a hurry. Either setting a destination somewhere else, or a bookmark, whatever. Just something so you can hit autopilot and let the ship fly itself while you fight back or defend for the couple seconds it takes to leave.
Check the Map
My first few days, I was exploring low-sec systems because I was curious, and got wasted. Someone told me about lookign at "Pods Killed" on the map, and sure enough that system was huge blob. The map has a lot of info if you learn to use it.

My advice is to keep you effects and turrets graphics turned off. It will reduce lag and will possible save your behind if you have to warp out of combat. I once warped into a blob and lagged and ended up back at my clone station. You gotta do it every time you log in but it can make a difference between life and death sometimes. ctrl+shift+alt+e will turn your effects off and ctrl+shift+alt+t will turn off your turret effects.

You're not going to be able to do that anymore! Now you will have to die with honour.
If you are working around a choke point, get an alt in place there so you can recon.

If you're in a gang, dont get 5 jumps ahead of your gangmates and warp your brand new assault frig into 5 enemy ceptors, theres a good chance that both your ship and pod will paying a visit to the big refinery in the sky.
