I posted this in my other thread but I think it deserves its own.
Are nanofactories actually worth less than coolant even though coolant takes a ton less upkeep?
Calculations:
Nanofactories - 760,000isk * 24 hours * 30 days * 3 factory planets = 1.64 billion.
I use 2 accounts to run this so 1.64 billion/2 accounts = 820 million per account
Coolant (on a single planet)
4 basic p0->p1 factories requiring 12,000 p0 each (24,000 p0 total) per hour (easy in a wormhole) which feed into 2 advanced p1-p2 factories. This (should?) run for 24/7, producing 10 units of coolant per hour.
Calculations:
Coolant - 9,500isk * 10 units per hour * 24 hours * 30 days * 5 p0-p2 planets * 3 characters = 1.03 billion per account
Or is my math wrong somewhere? |

Im not saying your maths is wrong however you may be overlooking the demand factor. A lot more people require coolant compared to the limited usage of nano-factories.
That and the very sad fact that no pi product can be refined means that any producer is locked in to the final product and must get the best price available. Where there is little demand the price is lowered to get any sale at all, while a product in demand but easily produced can be propped up to a higher average price compared to a p4.
I really wish pi products could be refined like t1 items for something back. Introducing waste materials would be far better than an arbitrary tax amount depending on location.

So theyre bringing to empire goods that cant be refined and that few people need. Why jot use rhe p4 materials to make the structures and sell to alliance/blues or actually in empire.

There are 2 reasons why the OP is getting those numbers.
In general it is true that doing almost any P1 or P2 will give a bigger profit than doing P4. For example: * you need 15 Planets for 2 Hi-Tech(Self-Harmonizing Power Core) facilities * 12 of these buildings are for extraction and R0 -> P1 conversion * 3 are for P2 -> P4
Reason 1:
So in general you will have 20% of your planets not extracting and only converting. You might think that Converting up does increase the materials value, and that is also true to some extent, but compare that additional profit to some additional extractor heads and you might find out that more extracting is better profit wise.
Reason 2:
Every P4 product needs an exact set amount of R0 Raw materials to make one P4 Product. The biggest extraction rate would be achieved by 2x ECUs with 6-7 heads totaling to a 12-14 heads per planet. This of course would be foolish to do without converting them to P1 on the planet at-least. While in a normal P1 production Planet you could max out you extraction to P1 conversion for your given Powergrid and CPU to be as efficient as possible. The problem comes in if you do P4 production and you are caped to a set number that you must extract to have your Hi-Tech(P4) running 24/7. While some planets will exceed your extraction needs, others may not have enough resources.
Some might know about those 2 facts others might not, but as @Oska Rus said most do P4 because of the big compression ratio.
Note: * Did you know that Self-Harmonizing Power Core(P4) is the only item which doesn't need "Micro Organisms" or "Carbon Compounds" for its production, two materials which are the worst to mine for.

Well your math is pretty inaccurate just based on how you're comparing the P4 manufacturing to the P2. You're comparing 3 planets manufacturing P4 vs 15 planets...
Here is the easy way to figure it out. 1 planet can that supports a full P4 factory setup (20 adv factories, 1 high-tech, 3 storage) will yield 22 P4 per day (22 hours).
Same planet could have 21 advanced factories will yield 2415 per day (23 hours)
nanofactories: 16,720,000 isk/day Coolant : 22,942,500 isk/day difference 6,222,500 If you're doing this in hs the nano factories will cost about 500k less to export.
Also the main reason for the difference in price is because Nano factories are used almost only in POS manufacturing so the demand for them is incredibly low compared coolant, which is used for all POS fuels. Most people who I know manufacture nano factories themselves because of how easy they are to make, so there is little demand for them.
Edit* Just realized you're importing P0. So you're looking at 3 factories for each coolant, total of 7 factories manufacturing
So you should be making 805 coolant per day (23 hours) Coolant: 7,647,500 isk/day |

Now based on his calculations and omitting any TAX, I would say he lives in a Wormhole and is using ECUs to extract all raw resources.
I must add that at some point I also did P2 in WH and with my max skills I could have 3x P2 factories on a single planet.
About 5000 Nano-Factories are traded daily in Jita. 1.000 of them is used to make Capital ship equipment. Now at this point I'm puzzled as to why the demand would have any big impact on the phenomena the OP described. The same components to build Coolant are also used to Build Nano-Factories.
@Sidrat Flush so what you are saying is that because P4 can't be refined that it is possible that at some point the value of the P4 product on the market will be less than the value of the materials needed to build one P4? Most people people including yourself are ignoring basic profitability issues such are supply, that is why I created the PI Profitability spreadsheet. I failed to educated the market but a lot of people use it to make bucket loads of ISK.
Look at columns M and N and produce the items with most profit. |

I will not say your math is wrong, but you are missing an important factor. 820 mil of Nanofactories is only a small fraction m3 wise that the coolant will be. If you are running factory planets 1 jump from Jita then hauling is not a big deal. But if you are deep in null sec isk/m3 is far more important than maximizing your isk.hour output.
Sure based on your math, you can make 18% more isk in the same amount of time, but if coolant requires 5 hauling loads to every one load of nanofactories is the extra logistics needed really worth the small increase in profits? If you calculate your isk per load hauled to market the nanofactories come out way ahead. Many P4 are made in deep null or W-space for this very reason. Maximizing isk/load is far more important. Sometimes P2 mats are worth 20-30% more than the P4 you could make in the same amount of time. But it is worth zero isk if you can not get it to market. Or you can look at it from the time you spend hauling. If you need to spend 5 hours a week hauling P2 mats to market or 1 hour a week hauling P4 mats. Is the 20% profit increase worth spending 500% more time hauling? If you are one jump from Jita sure, logistics is no problem. But if you are in a wormhole with only a small window 1-2 times a month to haul stuff out you want to fit as much isk/m3 as you can. |

Thanks. I was forgetting for a second that when I was doing p2 production before, I was only able to get about 20-30 mil per run in my mammoth, whereas with p4s I usually transport no more than 100 mil at a time.

Yes you are correct. I am running 3 P2->P4 factory planets which are supported by 24 extractor planets (Extracting R0 and converting to P1). My extractor planets ran for a few days before I could get my factory planets set up so I built up a surplus that has kept my factory planets running 24/7. However I realize now that my extractor planets aren't doing the 48,000 R0 an hour I require so I will need to add more.

Hey Styth I wanted to thank you again for helping. Your information in the other thread was incredibly valuable.
Sorry I didn't mention the fact that I do live in a wormhole and I am doing zero importing of goods from the market. Everything is being extracted and produced from within the wormhole. In the wormhole 3 planets producing P4 from P1 require at least 24 Planets extracting R0 and producing P1. Actually with my skills it will probably take about 25-27 planets. This requires 2 accounts with CCU and IPC IV, which is why I divided the end profit by 2 to get my per account profit.
The 15 planet setup is extracting two different types of R0 from the planet and producing the P2 on site (which I thought would be incredibly more inefficient than using dedicated extractor planets and dedicated factory planets for P4s). And using a reasonable 10 units an hour (which actually would only require CCU III) I calculated my end profit.
I had a question though. You state 22 nanofactories per hour since it takes 2 hours for the P1 to be processed into P4. But isn't that only for the first day? If I keep a factory planet consistently supplied, wouldn't a factory planet consistently produce 24 P4s after the first day?

Yes you are correct. I live in a WH and I'm extracting and producing p4 all within the wormhole. Styth provided invaluable help in the previous thread that let me get it up and running. I am operating on 0% tax.
I don't think the demand volume plays into effect except for the fact that it makes coolant more valuable and nanofactories not as much. So the end price being the only thing that matters.

Thanks, I've actually downloaded your spreadsheet before (and a few others) but I didn't see how it helped if someone was extracting and producing the end materials all on their own rather than importing from the market.

Ahaz Darkfall - not only should you factor in extra hauling, but also the turnover the products spend on the market. If P2 products sell faster, but require more baby sitting, wouldn't it not be a benefit to have mutliple lines in different systems of that highly sought P2 product compared to a slower turn over p4 item, that you may be ending up spending more isk (and time, regardless of hauling time unless you're really moving things around!) to get to market in the first place.

Thank you and I definitely see your point in regards to the hauling. However I usually do most of my hauling afk when I'm at work. The main thing isn't really the hauling from my wormhole to market, but the constant upkeep that P4s take.
Right now I have to unload my extractor planets every 82 hours to keep the launchpad from filling up and reload my P4 factory planets every 40 hours to keep them producing 24/7. It's a ton of hauling from the Customs offices to the POS that needs my direct attention rather than something I can do afk at work.
This compared to the fact that with r0->p2 single planet production I would only have to unload a planet once every 27 days, the attention that I have to give P2s seems much much less. |

Well from my calculations the P4 is not more valuable than P2, or in this case, coolant.

Running 2 P2 production facilities per planet as you do, with 5 planets giving you 10 units P2 each. That's 50 units P2 per hour. The nanofactory P4 production chain takes the equivalent of 80 P2 and 40 P1 units per hour.
Have you looked at squeezing out the max efficiency for each option? I believe your P4 chain will either leave you with more planets to play with, or more powergrid, depending on how you set it up. Which means you can also look into running a concurrent P3 process in addition to your P4. I assume you already maxed out your P2 options with the 5 factory planets setup. |

You are correct, there is just the first 2 hours are lost from the P2 -P4 factories waiting for their initial mats. You can compensate for this by using 2 launch pads for your P1 mats so it would run on a 2 day cycle (46 total hours), feeding in the initial P2 and P3 mats that will be used, or as you mentioned by continually keeping the launch pads filled with P1 materials. Generally this is a pain in the ass though in my opinion as you are then partially filling launch pads and having to calculate how much material to import of each type to keep your numbers exact. I'll generally try to get materials in between 24 - 26 hours or later rather then having to deal with the hassle of filling a launch pad with partial stacks.
So yeah, it will continue to run as long as you keep the factories fed, but after doing PI for several weeks/months there will be times when it's not possible to keep them filled. |

Nano factories are so low in price because they contain mostly all of the the garbage P1 mats that are very easy to extract in high volume and it only requires 2 P3 mats. This means people are able to buy up many of the cheap mats for very little (water,biofuels and bacteria can be bought at somes for as low as 50 isk) so their price tends to match these material values. Also even in highsec it is easy to extract many of these mats at 36k - 50k P0 per hour. This means that people with large PI deployments will have large quantities of these mats, and instead of selling them for almost nothing you can just make them yourself. Also when you consider the sell price for many of these mats and take into consideration high sec taxes some will not even make a profit (I have many times bought materials for less then their export tax cost).
Using price averages from Jita:
isk - total 100 - 032,000 Bacteria 418 - 133,760 Proteins 077 - 024,640 Biofuels 550 - 176,000 Industrial Fibers
387 - 123,840 Electrolytes 313 - 100,160 Oxygen 188 - 060,160 Plasmoids 170 - 054,400 Water
160 - 006,400 reactive metals 6,400
Total cost: 704,960 isk buying all mats. Jita sell: 747,499.99 isk Total cost: 309,760 isk buying industrial fibers and Proteins and extracting the rest (Saving 11,381,239 isk / large control tower).
As you can see nearly all the materials used are garbage low value materials, industrial fibers and proteins being the only expensive ones. Electrolytes have a high value, but they are easy to extract (tier 3 material). And even if you buy up all the mats at Jita average price, it is still cheaper then current sell prices. And when you consider for example a large control requiring 26 nano-factories you are looking at an additional cost of 1,106,040isk over buying the mats vs current sell price.
So yeah, the bulk of the people who will be making nano-factories wont buy them unless they are dealing with a supply block. These days large towers and other POS items have been taking a huge dive in price (down to 268M, down 7M from yesterday, and 30M from last week), and every isk that can be saved matters when you consider all the time and process involved.

Nanofactories - 760,000isk * 24 hours * 30 days * 3 factory planets = 1.64 billion.
I use 2 accounts to run this so 1.64 billion/2 accounts = 820 million per account
Coolant (on a single planet)
4 basic p0->p1 factories requiring 12,000 p0 each (24,000 p0 total) per hour (easy in a wormhole) which feed into 2 advanced p1-p2 factories. This (should?) run for 24/7, producing 10 units of coolant per hour.
Calculations:
Coolant - 9,500isk * 10 units per hour * 24 hours * 30 days * 5 p0-p2 planets * 3 characters = 1.03 billion per account

From my experience PI was all about: - work vs profit - time vs profit - risk vs profit
From this point of view I found out that P2 production on a single planet was the most efficient way of doing isk. For me a P4 does have more upkeep than P2 and the reward is a 45% reduction in volume. In the end it is more work with P4 upkeep than the one additional trip to haul a P2 material. But this is only like that because I live in a C1 and the risk doesn't increase x2.
It is often mentioned that increased workload will give more profit, but with PI I was always getting 20% more profit for 50% more work. Only with doing "Single Planet Productions" like P2 I could sustain the 1:1 ratio of profit vs work. And this did scale well with any additional account.
But going to big hurts the most when you don't have time to play EVE and most of the facilities are standing still :( So I never went beyond 3 active PI accounts and I find myself more often forgetting to restart the damn extractors these days. No no. I am producing in a wormhole so I need to extract the materials myself. I have 24 planets supporting the 3 factories. If I was importing I wouldn't just base my profit on the end product value.

Have you looked at squeezing out the max efficiency for each option? I believe your P4 chain will either leave you with more planets to play with, or more powergrid, depending on how you set it up. Which means you can also look into running a concurrent P3 process in addition to your P4. I assume you already maxed out your P2 options with the 5 factory planets setup.
edit: Anyway, with between 30 and 36 planets to work with, assuming 2 accounts, you can always look into one of the more resource-intensive P4 chains like wetwares, these kinds of chains sell for almost twice as much as a nanofactory unit and require only roughly 50% more P1 and P2.
I have actually. I run 24 hour cycles because I think it would be unreasonable for me to check it more than that. While to keep my factory planets running 24/7 I need 48,000 p0 of each resource per planet per hour (thanks styth). I overextract on about half of my resources, running from 48k to 60k per hour (most notably water) but I'm get short on the other half, running from 24-40k per hour (most notably plasma since I only have one storm). To keep myself running 24/7 I would need to set up at least one more Storm planet for Plasma and probably import some other P1s, which cuts into my overall profit. I wish I could do wetwares in my hole but I don't have the required planets.

66 coolant is equal to 1 nano-factory in m3 volume. This comes to a profit of 627,000 isk by volume of coolant vs 747,500 isk of nano-factories, giving you 120,500 isk based on the m3 amounts.
Thanks again Styth for your awesome numbers. That makes a lot of sense why nano factories are so low. I will probably switch back to coolant because to me the inconvenience of hauling to hisec is much less than having to refill factory planets and empty out launchpads 3-4 times a week.

Actually I've done the numbers for anyone else wanting to get into nanofactories.
With two launchpads holding 4 P1 each, you can have 6500 units of each.
Launchpad = 10,000 m3 6500 P1 * 4 different types * 0.38m3 per P1 = 9880m3
160 P1 units of each type are used per hour 6500/160=40.25 hours of time before a launchpad needs to be refilled However a launchpad can process 160 units and hold another 160 units at the same time so it's really 42.25 hours.
I also used the custom offices for storage. You can hold 11,500 of each P1 in the customs office. This makes it so that you only need to drag and drop the P1s into the launchpad instead of having to make a trip each time.
Customs Office = 35,000m3 11500 P1 * 8 different types * 0.38m3 per P1 = 34,960m3

Personally I would hate it if they did that. You would end up with the same situation with minerals where players are able to haul a ridiculous amount of materials through compression and it would just ruin the market. Doing PI in a wh/low/null can be great isk, but there is also risk and hassle. Removing the hassle will just make the value of PI so low people either will stop bothering with it, or it will be impossible to do in hs to make a profit over taxes.

I made this mistake as well early on. Don't be fooled into thinking that because P4 is a higher tier it will ultimately yield the best profits per day. P2 and P3 items that are used in T2 production and/or POS fuel can be more profitable in the bottom line because of higher demand.

The math in the initial post seems to be correctish however it is severely limited by the amount of available planets if you are considering going over from p4 -> p2 only production. Not every WH has 5 planets that can sustain a decent coolant production.
You can also increase the profits from the "p2/3" side by going over to dedicated factory planets as well. Instead of having 2 p2 factories per planet then with a 5 planet setup (4x p1, 1 factory) you can churn out 16-20 p2 factories per character easily. But the work load for managing 6 characters, with a 5 planet factory setup is quite high.... but each character on the account will be pulling in 550-600m per month.
With a few accounts you could get rich in a few months but will be burned out from PI as well in the same time. |
