You have buy orders on the market and you no longer have the funds to buy the items when somone sells?

You get an error message saying the transaction failed, you get fined, and the order is cancelled.

Fined? Ok well does that effect only the active character who placed the order, does it effect ur alts too?

Really money should be taken from you the moment you place a buy order is an escrow type system.
Otherwise I could place al big sell order at a nice price. Create an alt and create a bit buy order at a better price.
When I've sold the stuff the alt will be fined when they try to sell as he has no money. Delete alt make a new one, rinse and repeat.
That in my mind is using alts to exploit the game and should be prevented.
Making buy orders only possible if you have the funds and taking those funds into limbo when you place the order would prevent this cheating.

This was discussed and determined not to hurt the market much and was supposed to be implemented. Eh, not sure what happened to it, check out the dev blog.

I think your bank account should go into the negative numbers. This will affectively block that character's ability in purchasing new stuff on the market or by player trade. Moreover, after a specific period the negative numbers should have returned to a positive state or else legal action is taken against you.
For instance: your assets are starting to get sold off for their recycled mineral content (including ships, albeit saved for the final auction hehe). If after selling off all assets one still has debts that character is finished ie, DEAD or behind BARS whatever. That'll teach persons to place buy orders their wallets cant support. Thinking ahead is a valueable asset which a good trader should have or learn to have.
Just my few ISKs.

Falnaerith is correct, CCP were supposed to be considered having the money go to escrow in a similar way to the courier missions collateral and rewards.
I hope they do this.
Im sick of seeing buy orders for 18 billion mexallon.
