Hi, Just been playing for a few days !
I have noticed somehow, and if I'm wrong then tell me , that while my Probe frigate can mount 2 Mining I lasers (and maybe even 1 mining I and 1 mining II if I learn to electronic 3) then an industrial ship like a Mammoth could only mount 1 mining laser.
So the Mammoth can transport much more Ore but will mine it slower right ?
Going further on understanding things (well, I thought about all those floating containers with the 'secure' word on them, plus someone say in chat "mine with a frigate and haul with an industrial") I have tried to imagine an organization and I would like you to tell me if it's viable for now :
- I buy an industrial ship.
- I buy enough secure passworded containers so that when I empty those it will fill the cargo of my industrial.
- I put all those empty containers in My industrial ship Cargo and bring them in the Asteroid belt I have previously scouted (like 4 jumps away, sec 0.6 for example) and anchor them (I just need anchoring 1 right ?) near the Golden Omber asteroid or Fiery Kernite or whatever I like to mine.
- Then I place my industrial ship in a nearby station.
- Buy a shuttle to come back to where my Frigate is.
- Come with my Frigate to the asteroid belt and start mining, and, as I'm mining, transfer the Ore inside the anchored container nearby.
- I stop mining with my Frigate when I have mined enough to fill the cargo of the Industrial.
- Then come back to the nearby station in the same system, switch ship and have my Industrial recover all the ore, and only then do the 4 Jumps back to my "home" station.
- Then back and reswitch ships, etc...
So, unless I made some mistake somewhere, is it like people usually do ?

Yes mate..you have pretty much got the general idea. There are a few tips and tricks you need to know also and a few do's and dont's. I have not got the time at the moment to go over them all but will quite happily post further information later on if someone else has not done so already. Feel free to convo me later in game if you wish.. I am usually on every evening UK time. I can help you out a lot more that way.

Shoogli,
For solo mining in 0.6 an lower that is spot on. A few things you should know.
- It is possible to put 2 Miner II's on your proble if you fit a couple of Basic co-processors in the low slots. - You cant anchor you secure containers in 0.8 0.9 1.0 space. - You have to space the canisters 5km (from memory) as you are not able to have then close to other items. - Most corporations (Nova included) mine in a simular way, but they will have people mining a people hauling all at the same time.
If you want any more mining advise contact me in game, Nova is a small corp dedicated to helping new plays. You would more than welcome to join us on a mining operation (whether or not you chose to join the corp).

Edited by: Soulis on 13/06/2005 22:07:36 mining with others is the best way to make money and friends. it doesn't sound like fun have a few of you's mining and someone hauling but you get a good laugh in gang chat
not that i have ever mined before

Well thanks to all for the replies ! I'm happy to see I found the right way to organize my business almost by myself (yay me !).
So far I'm not able to fly an industrial yet (still learning to be frigate 3 atm) but it will be very soon. I already have made some tests to see how the anchored passworded containers worked and yes it's 5000m from anything : another container or from an asteroid.
I'll have more questions for sure, but before I'll check the other forums to get answers. For now I'm trying to understand all the "inside" of a ship : what to put in slots etc...

Just one extra thing to add. Rather than hauling the ore all the way back to your home station, just choose a nearby station (preferably one in system) that has a refinery. You can then mine all the ore you want and when you're done refine the lot. You can then haul the minerals back to your home base. The reason for this is that minerals take up much less space than ore and so you can reduce the number of high jump trips you have to make.
