I'm very new and was running a mission for my agent. They asked me to pick up some small arms. I was transporting them back on autopilot and stepped away for a second. I get back and I have 2 popups saying to hand them over or get nuked. I must have read them wrong and hit "No" on both. My ship is destroyed, my cargo is taken and I'm billed for 2 fines of $679K each which puts me way into the negative.
Is this a bug? Did I get 2 popups because I was AFK? Was I supposed to be billed twice? Any way to get my cash back if this is a bug?

No. No. Yes. No.
Small Arms are contraband in several regions and so customs will fine you and blow up your ship if you dont hand them over.
You found that out the hard way. You could petition it though - you may get some money refunded depending on whether the GM is having a good day or not.

got nailed by this when i first started playing the game. For new players this really sucks. Maybe a little bigger window about contraband and its fines should be added and be made a little more obvious.

That really sucks. Couldn't have happened at a worse time. 4 days till trial runs out (which I was planning to sign up) and I feel like I got screwed and set back quite a bit.
Totally not cool to send a newb on a mission with contraband and such a steep fine of over $1.3 million.

If you start playing the game (i mean paying) you get some money from me to start with
But i really like to see that ccp gives us the skills + ships that they promised because they maked contraband but forget to gives us the skills and ships

It was probably an LP reward offer. Even so, it still sucks. There should be some kind of warning message in the missions details.
EVE has a high enough learning curve already, the penalty of losing your first ship and having -500,000 ISK in your wallet is way too harsh if you're new, and I can see people quit over something like this.

I think there is a pop up message that comes up when you undock with contraband in your hold asking you "are you sure?" or something like that.
However I also thought that contraband missions had been removed as CCP havent given us a viable way of moving it around (especially if they remove instas)
I was fined plenty of times when moving my illegal stuff about but I knew the risks which I wouldnt have expected a new player to know.
Good luck with the petition anyway Cirana.

I got hit with this as well as a noob player. 250k Isk fine for moving small arms. I had no idea. Luckily I handed over the stuff and kept my Merlin, which I had just saved up for. Losing that as well would have been a show-stopper for me.

Thanks for all the responses. The kindness and helpfulness of the community surely outweighs the learning curve and difficulty of this game.
So, my next question is how do I actually finish this mission? The items aren't for sale where the mission is. How do I get them to the location without getting caught by the cops?

im not unsympathetic to this it should be more obvious so less noobs get caught out and know how to avoid this but.....ever since i started playing eve i always wanted to be a smuggler ive always had a nostalgic look on moonfleets lol so this contraband system is a real boon to me one tip all items now have a marker that comes up if its ilegal where youy are also somewhere abut in the galaxy map i belive is a tab tha tlets you see what systems consider your cargo illegal.

is it an lp offer (found under the offers tab) or an actual mission (under missions tab in journal)? If its a mission, it must be a bug cos agents shouldnt ask for contraband to complete missions, bar the odd in system kill mission.
If its an agent offer, as opposed to a mission, then its for you to decide if taking the risk is worth the reward of the offer.
