My agents always seem to want me to get them stuff like drugs or ectoplasm for LP reward. Right now I've always declined, as there tend to be a lot of customs ships around stargates.
Any player with some experience in smuggling care to share how on does it best or what one has to watch out for?

Nearly impossible. Use an alt (to avoid faction standing loss on your main) with a frigate, low slots filled with nanofibers, and instajumps. Its the only way.

So if I don't want to do that, my only choice is to always bin these agent offers? 
(Last one was for 1200 units of Ectoplasm = 600 cargo units)
Kind of silly if that is the case as these make up 1/3 -1/2 of the agent offers I get and all the high LP ones (the others tend to be getting some frozen food on the cheap)

Good afternoon (where I am anyway) just a little advice. As I understand it those agents want the drugs and the LP in exchange for cash usually, at least that has been my experience. You can save your LP and if your LP and standings get high enough I beleive they may offer you a ship or something for some minerals and a nice chunk of LP. I could be wrong but thats how I understand it, so I save my LP.

As far as I know that is correct, but since they are level 1 agents and I'm going to move on sooner or later...
Well there is a limit to how hight the LP are going to get then.
