I'd like to know what your favourite plot twist is, be it book, film or game. I've come across some good ones in my time, but I wonder if there are any I'm missing. Like for instance, the "I see dead people" film I forgot the name of. I didn't watch it because it seemed pretty pants to me, but then I heard the twist and thought maybe I should have.
May I ask, that anyone who feels they need to talk about the actual twist in spoiling-detail when they describe it - please make the offending text red, so people can skip it if they wish. ------------

There was a movie where the timeline was reversed, so you saw the whole story backwards, but it worked out in the end. Amazing movie with a crazy plot twist (i wont give it away), but i forget the name... ----------------------------------------------- CANADIAN |

An all time classic plot twist ending wos "The Usual Suspects" ending, when you realise that Verbal Kint/Keyser Soze wos telling/making the story up all along, and casting off his foot calipers at the end, and getting into the car as the agent realises the truth, then chases after him, truly classic stuff

I was about to reply with that earlier, but got interrupted. I think I had the same experience: first about two hours of things just moving along, a sort of portrait of prison life with nothing too unlikely happening, and then the last twenty minutes to reveal the "hidden" plans.
A more recent example was Oldboy (South Korean, take a look at it before the Hollywood remake comes). I liked Million Dollar Baby too, even though academy award winning dramas usually fall outside my taste.

From Dusk Till Dawn is a great plot twist, can still remember thinking "errrr WTF" when I seen it for the first time.
Quite liked the twist in Primal Fear. Didn't like the 6th Sense one much, as it forces you to go back and watch the film a second time.
EDIT: Forgot about Donnie Darko..... There was one I watched on Sky the other night, but can't remember the name of. Involved people all ending up at a motel in the middle of no where, all having the same birthday, all getting killed, and some guy in the real world having multiple personalities! ----------------------- Honor and Serve!

NOW babylon 5.
Through out you get told about the legendary figure who came from no where to lead a race to victory over evil thousands of years before. Then later the discovery of his disendats in another race stops a war.
Then the evil that was defeated before returns and u find out yet more that give's you a entirly diffrent look at it.
And you end up relising the first time the evil was defeated was also the second time.
Truely great story and one to watch every episode of.

Old Boy has a very good/dark plot twist at the end. And that fight scene is amazing, being done in one long take.
Irreversible is also very interesting, with the story being told backwards. It is a very brutal movie but it does get its point through.
Donnie Darko is also very good.

Memento. Those who saw it know the plot twist at the very end (or time wise, the beginning). I won't post it here for obvious spoiler reasons.
Some other ones I like include the plot twist at the end of Fullmetal Alchemist, where basically everything you thought in the entire series is turned on its head. Those who saw the last 5 episodes know exactly what I mean. Yet again, posting it here would be an insane spoiler, so I won't do it. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

I have to say, the Usual Suspects twist wasn't really all that. My favourites are Knights of the Old Republic, and Fight Club.
Also I quite liked the one in Equilibrium, When Father explains his whole plan to Preston, and you realize the whole thing was planned from the start, and how clever it was. Maybe the old addage 'evil will always win ... because good is dumb' is correct! If only Preston wasn't so handy with a gun, eh :) ------------

Please download a song called "Dance With the Devil". Its a rap song, but its a very eye opening story. If you listen to the actual words of the song, its very intense. Basically, its about a guy who wants to get in a street gang, and the ppl in gang tell him to do "something" to a woman...(u get the idea). Through the song, they find a woman walking the streets, they beat her up and take her to a roof... piece the rest of it together, afterwards, the guys tell the kid to kill the woman, he pulls back the shirt thats over her face, and it's the kid's mother... He jumps off of the roof and kills himself on the spot. Its avery eye opening story.

Heh, you finally watched the end bits I told you to with an alt ^^ (I'm the person who liked the major guy )
Usual Suspects ftw. The whole movie is just geared towards that ending and you don't see it coming, and Kevin Spacey's acting is SO GOOD, and then he stops limping and you think but then it all makes sense. It's just classy.

Unfortunately, the plot twist in the Matrix is kinda ruined now that everyone knows what it is. When I saw it in theatres I had heard very little about the movie, and had no idea what the matrix was.
IIRC the promos did a good job NOT revealing that little detail until after the movie hit theatres. Great plot twist the first time through.

Primal Fear.
The effect of the twist was much better in the book than it was with the film (with edward norton), the basic story is that a priest is murdered and a man is held for questioning, this guy couldn't harm a fly but he suffers from schiziophrenia in which his split personality is a right evil ba***rd. The trial goes to court and well...
You have to read it, then watch it. ___

Originally by: Omber Zombie memento was great, but no real plot twists invovled, just a good way to tell the story of someone who has no short term memory.
Actually there was one major plot twist, though it was very easy to miss. *Major Spoiler* Lenny's interspersed phone conversations revolve around a guy he had met previously when working as an insurance claim analyst. The guy he discusses had the same condition he now has (can't make long term memories). The guy's wife was diabetic, and she tested him to see if he was really faking by asking him to administer insulin injections every few minutes to see if he would remember.
We later learn there was no such guy, and Leonard was in fact the guy he'd been discussing, and it was his wife that had been diabetic, that he was in a home and had escaped. We also learn that his wife's murderer was already dead, but he cannot remember it, so he crossed out the parts of his *notes* relevant to that man, leaving the rest increasingly vague and thus open to reinterpretation, hence he kills other John Gs given time.

I really want to buy Saw on DVD, but the film scared me ****less when I saw it in the cinema.
So to expand on my list from earlier...
Saw - As above, scared me ****less. Very much like Se7en but crosses the line far before the beginning of the film. Everything beyond when the Jigsaw killer is killed. You just expect it to be a nice Hollywood ending. But OMG!
Old Boy - I mentioned this earlier. But a very good Korean film, very dark. The cuts between OldBoy and the fish shop girl at the end, when they are both looking at the photo albums.
Momento - This is the one everyone is talking about. Starting at the end, and working back to the beginning. Though I haven't seen it in a while.
Thomas Crown Affair - A bit crap, but a good twist at the end. Apples and Hats at the end.

If you think you can do a better job, go find yourself a datacentre to host a box, get a copy of Visual Studio, and STFU.

Trust me its sarcasm. I used to help install computer systems on DSRV's for an independent under water archeologist so I know that the Titanic sank and I also majored in Maritime History up until last semester at my Uni! Sooooooo

Also some of the twists in the Dark Tower books (altho i'm still to read number 7) were pretty cool imo.
The end is the mother of all twists. Enjoy.

The Village=predictable. I knew the ending 10 min into it.
From Dusk Till Dawn= WOW! The movie literaly did take a left Turn onto Degio! One of my all time favs.
Empire Strikes Back=yeah yeah yeah he's lukes father. but I was shocked and not happy with that plot twist.
Seven=POWERFUL AND DISTURBING! I don't know what bothered me more. the ending or the fact that some one actually thought that up.
Unbreakable=Loved that movie and that one caught me by surprise
Pitch Black=This movie shocked me in a lot of ways. The ending and the fact that it was so good. (\_/) (O.o) (> <) Teh Uber Asheron's Call Bunny Booty WTFPWNZ you!! |

I dunno if this has been mentioned...but I just finished watching a movie called 'The Game'. It's an EXCELLENT movie with some crazy stuff that will honestly keep you guessing until the last second of the movie. I don't want to give anything away, but if you have the means, I HIGHLY suggest seeing this movie. ----------------------------------------------- CANADIAN |

I forgot about The Game! That's got about what... three or four twists all at the end after one another? And each as surprising as the last! Ace. ------------
