Edited by: Lu Yan on 15/03/2006 11:47:50 You know, in addition to physical Tactical Environs, why not just add some more general mechanics to the game to make every environment a tactical environment. Perhaps, some basic EW mods could do the job, as the interdictor does.
Warp Trackers: Got a bogey in the system, all gates are blocked, yet the bugger is still somewhere out there? Turn on your High Energy Signature Tracker II, and see all the warp trails left in the last few minutes. The skill for the mod could also effect how long you can detect a trail before they fade. Bonus: CovertOp's check.
Advance Probe: Not sure about that gate ahead? Launch a Probe at it to see whatÆs about. Problem is, combined with the previous idea, the enemy at the gate could follow the trail back to you. Note: Would be best with a nerfed low sec local channel.
Radiation Flares: Like an EW Smart bomb. Shows up as a celestial beacon, but effects local targeting. Uses: Alert a fleet in local in an obvious way of enemies.
Decoys: 1) Flies in random directions away from your ship, leaving multiple warp trails. 2) Broadcasts confusing signals to fool scan probes/scanner, so they show multiple ships. Offset by their size and expense. Extra Tactical Value: Without local, an enemy has to rely on scanners/scouts. With more signatures on scanner, they may choose to retire, or a call a bluff (which might not be a bluff)
Jump Torpedoes: Fighter Drone that jumps to a location, flies toward, and detonates near a random ship/target in range. Con: They need a ship uncloaked near the enemy fleet-also, itÆs FoF, so watch the heck out.
Mines: The gate looked clear... until something exploded. Con) Dumb Weapon, not very powerful because of the size necessary to avoid detection. Pro) Still powerful enough to hurt a CovOps, and to disrupt a fleet. Types of mines include: Warp Disruptor mine, Radiation Flare mine, etc. Just make sure you know the way through the field. Also could be an insta counter, as even a little explosion against a ship in such a speed could damage it more.
These are just a few ideas, but the main point is, even if there are a few beautiful or interesting locations, they aren't accessible all the time, and battles may never even occur in the vicinity. Perhaps the best course of action is to make all combat more tactical, and therefore more accessible, not to diss any of the wonderful ideas as so far however.
I'd pay more for more tactical availability, and imagine the fun of a pursuit through a system. It would add more brains to a very brawny sport.
EDIT: The Whole Darn Universe is an Environment. So, Topic, Eat my shorts.
