Since we are doing the 'best of' topics, here is mine thrown into the mix.
The best hooks (intros) in film, TV, and games.
For those fo you who do not know what a hook is, it is normally the first few minutes of a film, before any real dialogue. Often cut in with the credits.
For example:
Half Life Game The introduction train sequence with the titles, mini scenes you can see out of the train, and getting to work.
Doom 3 Game Really a prettier version of the above, up until the first demon.
Insomnia Film The whole camera panning through mist, forests, glaciers with the titles.
I am sure the "all your base are belong to us" should be in this list, but I've never seen the game first-hand and I can't be arsed to Google it.

If you think you can do a better job, go find yourself a datacentre to host a box, get a copy of Visual Studio, and STFU.

I think Kill Bill had a quite good opening: (colorful logos) > A Band Apart > tightly cropped shot with The Bride > plain white credits on black to the sound of Bang Bang. It worked very well, especially with that song through a theatre sound system.
I also for some reason love the first line of William Gibson's Neuromancer: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." Only one line, but it does a lot to set the ambience.

well... i suppose the first star wars have to come into it "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" then boom up comes the big start wars logo, one of the most iconic images in cinema these days i think.

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, The intro for that is awesome.
Homeworld, prepping up for the first mission with Adagio for Strings playing, loved it.
Any Tarantino film intro.

Movies: Star Trek - First Contact (looong camera shot from borg to picard), Star Wars ep 3 (loooong shot thru space battle), The Day After Tomorrow (cool shots of glaciers), Hostage (not a great film, but the titles were uber), 2001: A Space Oddysey. Lots of other great ones that don't quite spring to mind....
Games: Final Fantasy 7 and 10, Super Metroid (cool music), all Tekkens (esp no 5), MGS2: Sons Of Liberty (omg), Half-Life 1+2, I-War, anything by Blizzard (their fmv is outstanding imo), Dawn of War, Gran Turismo (all), absolutely tons of others I'm sure people will mention...

Contact - The opening scene which pans out from the Earth to the universe, while playing music from older and older times as the "camera" grows more distant from earth.
I saw this movie on opening day in a very large, very packed theatre, and I've never heard an audience so quiet. The silence in the audience was even more dramatic when the opening itself went dead silent for what must have been at least a minute, once the "camera" had moved well beyond any range of earth radio.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 27/06/2005 12:48:15 Nothing, ever, will beat the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex intro, which is AFAIK the only full-3D intro ever made for any TV show of any sort. It is absolutely amazing. It also adds 50MB to every episode I save on my hard disk.
For games, the FF7 opening movie (with the overview of Midgar) is my favorite by far. -- Dark Shikari: POS Consultant!

Intro to ea's NHL 98.
Last thing you would probaly think, but it surpassed every other sports game intro ever.
Ea's NHL rocks anyway, but the intro was worth watching everytime before you played to get the mood more so. --------
