Hi all,
I would like to create a discussion about the origin of the ship-names. Some examples:

I think Kestrel just means kestrel, like the falcon-type bird |

After some research into the name...
The Moa is an extinct flightless bird that was native to Australia. It was the main food source for another extinct bird named the Haast's Eagle. Man came and hunted the Moa to extinction and with the Moa gone, the Eagle also became extinct.
Put it in EVE perspective, the Moa is a very rarely used ship and the Eagle is almost profitable to reprocess than to actually fly in combat. How may I drug you with drugs? |

Correct, and Amarr are based on religious terms (especially Roman Catholic), Minmatar include alot of Norse mythology, melee weapons, animals and storms.

There was a thread some time back about this. if memory serves me right...
Gallente ships are named after various deities, most of them from Greek mythology. Caldari ships are named after birds... with some exceptions. Amarr ships are named after terms that are religious in nature. Minmitar ships are named after various animals and weather events that denote power and/or destruction. Gallente ships are named after various deities, most of them from Greek mythology. Caldari ships are named after birds, and figures from Japanese folklore. Amarr ships are named after terms that are religious in nature. mostly Christian. Minmitar ships are named after various animals and weather events that denote power and/or destruction, but most of them are straight out of Norse mythology.

For those of you who can read Spanish, GilGalaad from Divine Alliance bothered himself to find out the meaning of EVERY ship name in EVE. Some have got pretty weird stories...
GilGalaad (DA) at eveonline.es: EVE ship names explained (threadnaught)
Translated excerpt on the breakout of racial names:
Gallente -> Mostly names from ancient mythology
Minmatar -> Mostly Scandinavian mythology and blade weapons
Amarr -> Mostly religious concepts with elements of christian, jewish and islamic mythology
Caldari -> Mostly fantasy animals, actual animals with a mythological meaning, and Eastern mythology
Angel Cartel ->Mostly Angelology names
Blood Raider -> Mostly gore names
Sansha Nation -> Mostly Daemonology names
Jove -> Mostly names of specters and ghosts

You fight a Tengu as an 'end boss' in Dead or Alive 2 I think it was, you know, the Tekken look-alikie but with crapper controls and no combo chains, much like the older Street Fighters.

Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. |

True but makes you wonder if they actually know how a kestrel or a falcon like we know look like , remember this is 20 000 years in the future
Also since we suppose to have lost all knowledge about where we come from and Earths history and we went thru a dark age that lasted a couple of thousand years where does the greek and norse mythology comes from
I do not agree with what you are saying , but i will defend to the death your right to say it...... Voltaire |

Is it really that hard just to look it up? Tengu translates to 'heavenly dog' but are portrayed as a bird demon.
Edit: All the names come from that fact that CCP(and game devs in particular) will steal names/mythology any chance they can get away with. o/`-á Lord, I want to be a gynecologist.. KY, rubber gloves, and a flashlight.-á o/` |
