Using an Industrial ship for mining is only good if you are away from the computer, commonly reffered to as afk mining.
The best setup for active mining is a ship what can fit as many mining lasers as possible and mining drones.
A good choice is the Gallente Thorax. Untill you get a cruiser use a frigate such as the Imicus or Probe, Caldari frigates blows chunks when it comes to mining and Amarr I got no knowdledge about.
Assuming you got an Imicus, load it with dual Miner 1 and some drones. Then jettison your ore into space. Use only 1 can, you can open the can and drag ore from your cargo to your can. It's better than having 25 cans floating around.
Just remember that if you jettison ore someone can shoot it or steal it and you cannot do anything about it. Shot them and CONCORD warps in and slap you silly. á

Quick mining you do in a Burst it gets 5% bonus to mining yield pr Min Frig level.
But the downside u need some skills to fit 2 mining lasers on the small ship:)

Actually, the Caldari Bantam is an excellent and affordable mining platform for beginners. It can fit 2 miner beams without trouble, and has 100 drone space.
If you want the larger cargo expanders, be aware that you'll need Mechanic, then Hull Upgrade skills. You'll find the Cargo Exander I (CE I) on the market, but the larger pirate loot expander will only be found on the Trade channel. However, larger expanders are going to cost you tons of isk. I have seen CE I's on the market for anywhere from 150k-400k EACH. The pirate loot ones sell for millions, and are very rare.

There are a number of ways to improve mining speed.
Purchase better mining lasers. The best I have seen are the Vapour Lasers available on the Trade channel. Not sure on price at the moment but expect to pay in excess of 500k each. Mining speed will increase buy 20% at base level.
Improve your mining skill, 5% increase in base mining speed per level.
Purchase an Industrial type craft. Mine to a canister for an hour or so and then go get your indy, load it up from your can. Repeat many times.
Use mining drones. Harvester ones are best maybe there are better ones.
Corperation. Join a corp for strip mining ops. You may be loaned craft (if you have the skills) to assist in a strip mining operation. Some will mine, some will run indys and some may give protection depending on pirate activity. Expect to share between corp and all players in the op.
Use local channel to find other players willing to join you in mining. Again expect to share. Some may try to rip you off but most are more than willing to help as it suits them. Also someone may have a very high refining skill in the group so allow them to refine for you if you trust them.
Key skills are Mining, Refining, ship class's (indy lvl 1 is a must).
As a warning there are people out their that will steal your can in safe sectors so don't shoot them unless you want the police all over you. Use the local channel to call for help in the less safe sectors if jumped by pirates when mining. Many players may be hunting in your sector and want the combat.

Industrial ships are good for afk mining but yes they can only hold 1 mining lazer. If your looking to solo mine quickly, you will need to go out in a probe (best mining frigate) or a cruiser if you have the cash. You can mine, put it in a container as you go along and then come back for it in your indy. Of course this is risky though as there are alot of thieves out there, but if you are alone its a risk your going to have to take to make alot of cash quickly. I suggest mining in a group though if possible, then splitting the cash....its much quicker, easier and more profitable.

It actually has a "you can only use one mining laser on this ship disclaimer" :p
Yes, it has 2 High slots, but only one of them is a turret slot - and guess what you need for a mining laser?
Just another case of someone who hasn't bothered to take a close look at the ships specs...

Uhm, start reading the information on the ship. When it says 1 turret point that means 1 miner or gun =P This may help you on what you can equip with your future ships =)
BTW im stuck so if CCP is reading this . Please get me unstuck =P

Rodney,
Get a ship (any combat frigate) that can support two mining lasers. Mine into a can. That means if your hold is full, jettison the cargo. Sometimes, you can also drag your cargo from your hold into a can nearby, reducing the number of cans. Do this until you feel ready. Make sure your cans don't stay in space for an hour or they disintegrate.
Return to your base and then pick up your industrial ship. Take your industrial to where the cans are and move the ore in from the cans to the ship's hold. This is a very common practice.

REMEMBER:
All tell you to mine to a can, but take care: jettisoned cans implode after 1 h. So make sure you dont use one can that long :D

You can use a punisher with 4 basic cpu's .. you can then mount 3 mining lasers... waste of a good fighting frig though =) |

cant you just mine into a can for 58 minutes, then jettison a new can and move the ore from the 1st can over to the new one and just keep mining?

Vibrant Soul, You can "just mine into a can for 58 minutes, then jettison a new can and move the ore from the 1st can over to the new one and just keep mining?"
We do this with pirate loot cans, which saves us having to wait for the jettison timer to run out.

If you're going to do 2 frigate mining, I would recommend Imicus or Tristan (if you're going gallente, which isn't a bad idea).
Both can mount 2 mining lasers, and imicus can carry lots. * * *
