Dear CCP, I was curious if you guys have ever thought of the idea that any ship bigger than a shuttle (maybe bigger than a frigate, I can't decide) should require the player to hire a crew to operate it. The reason i was wondering this, is because I have thought about it a LOT in the past few weeks, and it just bothers me about how unrealistic it is that the player doesn't have to hire a crew, and can just operate a behemoth such as a battleship by his/herself. I think if this was added, there could be many more in-depth things like this added to the game, such as the Amarrians using slaves to operate their ship, which would make the tradegood of slaves useful. I just think that adding a crew requirement to ships bigger than a frigate would make the game more dynamic, realistic, and interesting. All your base are belong to us. |

Edited by: Andarias on 05/07/2005 21:26:57 Rough numbers from a screen shot I saw somewhere
Cruisers: 860 crew Battleships: 4600 crew
It's invisible to the player though.

Edited by: Exelsior on 05/07/2005 21:27:09 Actually, if you refer to some of the very first pictures of ships issued by ccp (can't find them atm) then it clearly says somethign like 7000 crew for thron, etc, these are just ignored and placed as non visible npcs, however there have been suggestions as to makign them controllable and hireable, which can be found in the ideas forum.
Edit: Adnarias posted at same time :P

I think there is an EVE chronicle about this issue which says that ships do have a crew.
However, the way I see it, pilots of capsule-fitted ships have a direct interface between their brain and their ship, and this pretty much negates the purpose of having any crew at all.

Such a feature would just be a menial task that wouldn't add to the game. It would either add nothing to the game or break it.

Old ships got crew. But we are pod pilots, and in our pod, we are better than a crew. Because we control our ship with our mind instantaneously.
You should interest yourself in the rich background of EVE : http://www.eve-online.com/background/eggers/ http://www.eve-online.com/background/potw/23-apr-04.asp http://www.eve-online.com/background/potw/jul03.asp

Sincerely, I dont think this way. What I think is just that EVE was designed in such a way that simulation of the ship is not in focus at all. What is in focus on this game is fast action game in kind strategic style. That is it.
And if you look in the chronics you will certanly find out why we can control an entire battleship with just one pilot, that is just a way to justify the design of the game, to make it convincing.
I have also thought in the aspect of crew and I think this would greatly enhace the RPG aspect of the game...a ship would need diferent kind of at least chief staffs wich would be available in the "job market", there would be no interection, they would work just like modules and they could have diferent kind of skills and performaces wich would trail its price and availabilitie, then you would have to pay by month like any other employe. But then....it will counteract why pod exist in first place...

1. It can be implemented as money sink for ship maintenance and effectively reduce amount of BS's in the game.
2. It can be implemented in such way, where your crew will boost certain ship/guns/whatever bonuses. 100% crew load boost 10%, 0% crew load -10%. So, it could be crew specialization implemented as well.
5. It would be nice, if crew can be equivalent to the skills. Not all skills, but some, at lvl1. For example, by hiring specialist crew members you can use modules without learning skill for it.
4. It can be done, that crew may gain experience during combat which may boost ship velocity/agility in the same way as some implants do. Which effectively will form a veteran crew market.

I hope we see escape pods for the crew as well when a ship is destroyed. So far, I've only seeing one pod. I guess all the crew members are gone with the ship. There must be a lot of people around and clone company must be the richest corp in game. Just Consider how many ship dies each day!

There's only one problem with crews... They'll form unions and go on strike, and then what? -----------------------------------------------
