The other day I was scanning down abandoned wrecks and salvaging them. The next day when I logged on I noticed my standing with the Brutor Tribe had gone down .06. I fainly remember salvaging some Minmatar wrecks, but I have never seen a standing loss from salvaging.
Can someone explain the mechanic please? This thread has so much content it may be 'Thread of the Year' and it is only January.

You lose security status from looting owned (yellow) wrecks.
Looting blue (abandoned) or white (owned by you/your faction) wrecks, or salvaging any wreck, has no effect on sec status.
No aspect of looting or salvaging alters any standing other than security rating in any way.
... my guess is that you killed a Brutor-friendly frigate in a belt or something before you logged off and just weren't thinking about it. You can check the standing adjustments log to see if the listed reason gives you a hint as to why it changed. |

I don't recall that mechanic ever being placed in the game.
Taking loot from a yellow can or wreck will give you a suspect flag, thus allowing others to freely engage / attack you for 15 minutes, that's it.
If you shoot a yellow can or wreck, then you'll incur a security status reduction. If you do it in high sec, Concord will also show up, dish out some revenge and destroy your ship.

Also possibility, that he was salvaging while in active mission, and some missions incur standing loss if you show up there...
Anyhow, select brutor tribe standings again, right click, and select show transactions. It will show when and how much standing was added or taken. Also it shows reason. |

Note that there is a difference between looting and salvaging. Looting means taking items out of the wreck. Salvaging is using a salvager or salvage drones to "eat" the wreck itself. Looting yellow is theft and will give you a suspect flag. Salvaging yellow does not.
As for the Brutor standing loss, that can only be attributed to two things: You either shot a Republic ship or, more likely, did a storyline mission for a faction that the Brutor do not like (read: pretty much everyone).

I went through my history and nothing jumped out. So I think what happened is I was not looking at my standing, but noticed the drop for the corporation. So now I need to talk to my corp mates to see who is pissing off the Brutor.
Thanks for all your input. I will go back to salvaging abandoned wrecks. This thread has so much content it may be 'Thread of the Year' and it is only January.

I've never figured player corp standings to be effective in any way I know everything says it should be, but I just can't find it anywhere... it must be as low as 0.06... |

Keep in mind while you can legally salvage a wreck that contains loot, you still can not legally loot from either it or the yellow can the will appear in it's place when you are done salvaging it.
Salvage will always deposit directly into your cargo bay. You don't have to open anything. If you had to open something to get it then you're looking at theft.

Actually you incur a standing loss if you kill and/or pod a player from npc corporation, and Brutor Tribe [B] is one of those corporations. Most likely OP has shot a player from this npc corp somewhere and got the standing penalty for it. (it also explains why one of my pvp alts has a -10 standing with most of the npc corps that accept players despite the fact that i haven't done a single mission on that character |
