The scorpion seems to be nerfed for EW far more than its EW bonus's can help. It seems that the Scopr for EW can only be used in fleet actions.
Its scan reolution is 75, a tad worse than the Raven, and far slower than the Apoc and Temptest. If a Scorpion is going to give up its shield tanking and other med slots for EW, its at a great disadvantage unless it dedicates 2 med slots with t2 sensor boosters to bring it close to other player ships. While EW can be considered offensive or defensive, its only useful EW bonus is 5% jammer strength per level. The range bonus is not going to be used that often. A ship can't practice EW if it is going to be targeted first, and is not even on par with any other battleship. With only a 5% bonus to jammer strength - I'd rather practice EW with a ship I can lock faster with.

I agree, the scorpion which is my favorite ship is quite terrible at the moment. If for some reason the jammers dont work the ship is basically a 70 milllion (plus mods) floating target that cant tank or deal damage.

You can armour tank the low slots quite nicely.
It does have a poor scan resolution but the fact that it will be called primary target by almost everybody shows you how valuable it is.

The scorp only has 4 low slots and with the Caldari-nerf, the scorp will need at least 2 of them for PDU's from what players are reporting it is plans to use more than 4 high slots.

the main reason the scorp has such a low scan rez is an old design feature. If you notice, althou the caldari ships have the longest targeting range of all the ships, they have the worse scan resolutions, while minmatar are completly the opposite.
That was to insure that long targeting ships would target slower than the short targeting ships, to give a "chance" (not that it is that much usefull nowadays with the sensor boosters and all that) to those that have shorter targeting range. -------------------

Minmatar 'style' is to zip in, blast you, zip out. Thus they designed their ships to target faster. Caldari idea is to lay siege down, target from forever and a day away, and attack. So they are not just slow as far as targetting speed, but if you look, they're damn slow ships in the first place. Don't ask for them to be uber useful AND fast as lightning in anything.
Or at least, you can glean this information by looking at the Phoenix, and then at the Tempest or Rifter or something. ---

Ok so the scorp has a somewhat slower lock time. Yes this does suck. The range of its ability to target is greater although i do understand that most of the time this range does not come into play.
Yes you have to gear up some of your mid slots to help things out. One sensor booster 2 helps alot. I never really gear more then that.
As far as other ships locking you first yes this is a common thing. The scorp although has great sensor strength making it hell to jam up so that helps.
And you can easly jam and tank at the same time. I usaly have 4 shield tanking slots and 3 jammers and a sensor booster. If i was worried about missile damage i may sac out one of my shield tank slots for a 90% weber.
With all your low slots given to power diags you have an ok amount of shields and a better cap regen witch helps out your balancing 3 jammers, (Although you will loose out on cap over time)
Iv never really has much of a problem with the build overall. I find that the scorps 5% jam strength is very nice and the 20% to ECM range is great. Its a powerful ship but as a T1 battleship it cant do everything at once, but then again neather can most other battleships.

Edited by: Ademaro Imre on 07/07/2005 04:37:35 the 5% bonus only works to a 1.7% greater chance of jamming per level against another battleship (math on a Megathron not considering signal dispersion skill) with a t2 racial jammer. With atrocious locking, it will he higher for frigates if the Scorp is able to get a lock without being sensor dampened first. The 1.7% is a pittance and not worth the sacrifice to start out with a terrivle scan resolution. Now - if its long distance - that might be different.

Due all respect to ew. COME ON, scorp has 90 km base targeting range. Its like 30% more of a tempest. What else you need? A "insta win" button? With 8 meds you should have space for sensor bosters

I think the Scorpion is fine. It's not like it has a lack of midslots to fit an extra sensor booster.
The jamming bonus is fine too. Sure it actually only works out to around 2% probability per lvl, but it does help. For instance lets take a Scorpion with two tech II racial jammers vs a Megathron. The Scorp pilot has maxed out EW skills.
Chance that the Megathron won't be jammed: 23.8%
Now, lets have that same Scorp pilot in a Raven instead.
Chance that the Megathron won't be jammed: 34.9%
This is quite significant. You have almost one third fewer 20 second cycles where that Mega won't be trying to kill you. If you have three racial jammers, the number of failed jamming cycles is reduced by almost half when comparing jammers fitted to a scorp vs jammers fitted on any other ship.
The effect for Multispec II's isn't as big as for the racial jammer II's. It takes 4 multispec II's to get a 33% failed jamming cycle reduction, and 7 Multispec II's to get a 50% failed jamming cycle reduction.

This is something that I can not fathom... Radar signature in EVE.
In electronics and high power emission systems, the bigger the better. The larger the platform, the better for resolution. As an example, The Soviet Era Bear Delta and the Soviet Helocopter Hormone Bravo.
Both of these aircraft used the same radar system, NATO code named "Big Bulge" due in part to the bulge in the fuselage of the aircraft. The Bear Delta used the "Alpha" version and the Hormone used the "Bravo" version. The difference electronically was the pulse width.
Pulse width dictates target resolution - a smaller PW and the easier it is for the system to discrimiate targets. The pulse width is dictated by the ability of a high power system to handle heat generated by switching. Smaller PW means higher switching, means more heat.
The Bear Delta - a larger plaform - could easily handle the disapation of heat generated by switching, but the Hormone could not, thus had a much larger PW.
In EVE this is Backasswards. Larger ships have problems with resolution. Even thoug a larger ship could handle switching (heat) and pack more equipment for signal descrimiation. IF anything - a smaller ship would not be able to generate the power necessary to maintain the average Power out and the higher duty cycle of a larger ship...
Perfectly silly if you ask me...

I never worried about locking times on my scorp, so what if they get 2 shots off before they're jammed? Don't think I ever included a sensor booster in one of my setups tbh. Scrambling needs to be done fast but that's up to the guys in frigs. |

thing is eve is a game.
I understand their logic.
smaller ships are harder to lock, but I know what you mean
bigger ships should have better locks. the logic behind it being that you could stick a frigs targetter in a BS.
oh well, game balance wins over logic any day
