I'm a little confused as the to primary and secondary skill requirements. Which do you need to have trained before you can actually operate a piece of equipment? Just the primary skills, or both sets? If it is the latter, then what's the point of the secondary skills?

Edited by: Cheim on 07/07/2005 09:24:42 Both. There is only one primary skill and one secondary skill (if any). The other skills listed are the prerequisites for the primary or secondary skill. |

Hi,
All skills ( primary and secondary ) have to be shown as green to operate any given item.

So what's the point of this system? Why not simply have one set of skills to be trained, instead of dividing them into primary and secondary?

We don't know what mechanism CCP uses behind the scenes to decide what skills are prerequisites. Maybe they have something like class inheritance, where for example all skills under Navigation will have secondary skill X as a prerequisite, just because they're Navigation skills, and then in addition to that, CCP can manually designate a primary prerequisite that they see fit for each particular skill.
Who knows.

I have always wondered this.
For example take a large barge.
Astrogeology Level V - secondary skill Astrogeology Level III - Primary skill
How does that work? The primary skill required is 2 levels lower tha nthe seocndary skill. Also Science level IV appears in both primary & secondary skills.
It doesn't really matter I guess, just learn al the skills it asks you to then you can fly/use whatever it is you want

The Primary skills are simply the highest level skills for that item.
While the Secoundary skills are required, they are just pre-reqs. They don't have to be listed, but are there to let you know just how much training you have to do before you can use a given item.
For example, if a total new item is put in place and say requires Basket Weaving 4 as its primary. If that was all that was shown you might think it can be trained in a few days with no effort. But if the pre-reqs include Weaving 5, Under Water Operations 5, Puncture Resist 4, and Twiddling 4. You can see that it may take a month or more just to get the pre-reqs for the primary skill.

Ah yes, that makes mucho sense. Cheers.

The large mining barge has two skill requirements: Mining Barge 5 (primary) and Astrogeology 5 (secondary). However, each of those skills has prerequisites of its own, which are listed for your convenience. You need Astrogeology 3 for Mining Barge, so it is listed under Mining Barge. The requirements for Astrogeology are then listed under that skill. And so on. |
