I wasnt to bothered about the daily downtime because I know CCP need to reset the servers, however I have now realised that 1 hour a day means that we are paying for over a full days worth of downtime a month...plus the 12 hour patch update downtime. So far this month I may have payed for more than 24 hours of downtime!
I noticed that the activation fee comes with 30 days 'game-time' therefore it must exclude downtime and was wondering does the 30 days counter stop when downtime is in progress?

It's kind of a moot point. The fee you pay per month takes into account that the game is down for (nominally) one hour every day. CCP could easily argue that, if they hadn't allowed for an hour's downtime, they'd actually charge one or two Euros/dollars more per month, and thereby your downtime is effectively unpaid.
You can argue the toss either way. The fact is, you pay whatever it is you pay, and you know it's down an hour each day. If the fee's worth it despite that, you carry on paying and playing.
Or, like me, you don't think it's worth it, but you carry on paying anyway cos you're addicted

You should go play World of Warcraft where the down time in about 12 hours EVERY Tuesday. EVE has minimal downtime and free expansions like yesterday. Blizzard or SOE would have charged you no less than $20 to buy what you got from CCP for free.

Read the EULA more carefully. The 30 days 'game-time' means that you have paid for the right to access the eve server for the next 30 calendar days, during whatever periods the server is avaliable. CCP make no guarantees of avaliability, other than they will take "reasonable" steps to ensure it remains avaliable, subject to necessary maintenance etc. CCP have, very rarely, added an extra day to everyone's subscription when unexpected failure has caused an extended outage (by which I mean 18+hours). They have never added gametime to allow for the daily downtimes, nor for scheduled patch or maintenance downtimes, as you agreed to these as part of the EULA.

I ones asked a dev...why do you have DT?
some of the reasons..is the indexing of SQL tables and delete all items that have been marked as deleted doing game time :)

Well to be honest its not really about the money, as a UK player who normally goes on EVE between 10am and 1pm BST, I get affected with the downtime, as the patch update, I could not go on EVE all day, whereas say in America, they could play the same day as downtime, whereas you could say I missed out on a full day!

but then again, isn't things good the way they are?
I live in denmark so don't think i'm not effected by downtime either :P
but i really dont mind that much, i sleep till 14 GMT+1 most days anyway, and on a day like this i have plenty to do, go to the bank, pack my bags, get ready for Drome.lan, etc. :>
I'm rather grateful that i'm not forced to play on servers beaten to the death by being up for countless days on end, and grateful for the fact that i get to play on one huge server, and not the itty nitty gritty shards that every other "MMO" uses :)

yo, don't forget about the 1-3h loginserver DT, ordinary crashes and other problems you see daily.
oh and the major lack of information from blizzard.

actually, you only pay to play one day per month, all the rest of the playtime you get is free of charge.
