Dunno who is the Galliente ship designer, but I must say that Thorax is a damn piece of art.
Being a Sci-Fi fan, this is prolly one of the best designed ships I ever see, you can spend hours watching it and still discover new subtleties in the design, no symetry, but still a real harmony in the forms.
I must say it is a real piece of fine Art, I know it's old and everyone is used to see it everywhere now, but It's some time already I wanted to congratulate the designers about it.

well, someone obviously has a fascination with large phallic objects :) --------------------------------------------- Engineers motto; If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway. |

LOL good one ! :D
Why not after all, the phallus is a sign of fertility and power among lot of old civilisations.
And the frigates of the Metabarons of Jodorowsky/Gimenez, who are in the story the cast of the most powerfull warriors of all times, are phallus. :)

I do love my thorax.
I think whoever is doing the models for CCP needs major props, the ships are all distinctive and at least interesting looking. I tend to prefer the look of the Amarr ships, but the thorax is one exception to that.

Not meaning to sound negative or anything, but the Thorax model bugs me. Just my opinion. It is terribly assymetrical, having that odd growth nacell at the bottom, it has what looks like a jet turbine intake on one wing, but it is not circular so couldn't possibly spin and would be fairly useless in space anyway. Now the Vexor I like. The Armageddon also has a very nice model, but the textures are very blurry, unlike the Bestower which looks amazing to me, even though it is a relatively boring ship. :) -- "Never use a sledgehammer to drive a thumb tack." |

Compliments to the ship and many of the base designs. They are fantastic. Now, if we could just get a ship with a couple of large spheres on the front for us guys. Call it the Jugathron or something :)

Yah right master, donŠt complain about your ships ;) ... the minmatar scythe looks like a goddamn giant space turkey while the stabber looks like it DOES want to be a stabber...
I like the Rifter though... ____________________________________

the thorax looks like a big jimbrowski.
Not that I'm complaining, it's taking the e-***** to new and unheard of dimensions.
Oh, and the osprey looks like a UPVC window frame off-cut. All sort of extruded.

Sometimes I think there was some confusion on which ship model to use for what.
The Minmater Mammoth model was obviously supposed to be some kind of battleship or carrier. It even has that huge "hanger" in the front of it. But, alas, it ends up being an industrial. *sigh*

The best looking cruiser is the Omen.. The thorax looks like a partially melted blue *****. That cancerous single nacell growth on the bottom doesn't help matters..

ever heard the term big green donkey ****.
but yes thorax is one sexy ship. bestower is a slug. Moa is either godzilla or a can opener.
heck even the exqueter is on same lines as a thorax.

The thorax would be a highly impractical ship design. The many big bulbs of hull and the overal inefficient geometry of the ship would increase the resource cost for the ship unnessecary. Theres also some kind of intake fan on the left side of the ship for purposes unknown. The elliptical shape of it makes it even more mysterious. The big tumorous nacelle at the bottom of the ship also holds just one little thruster, which seems odd for the size of the nacelle. The overal bulkyness of the design and the low-res textures the thorax has compared to caldari ships for example also make it looks less big than it actually is. The Megathron suffers from this even more. Strangely, the Vexor and the Dominix don't have this problem.
I guess an explanation could be that the gallente are so caught up in their beauty stuff, they don't care about the functionality of their ships anymore and just build whatever they think looks nice.

The Gallente ships look like products of the Salvador Dali School of Aerospace Design.
. . . and I still think Minmatar ships should come with MANDATORY cloaking devices. |

I think the design of the ships has a lot to do with the philosophy of the cultures. I know there hasn't been much done with the story about the cultures but we do have a little background and the ships seem to mimmick that.
Gallente: lavish, luxurious, beauty Amarr: Impressive and rather intimidating Caldari: have a birds or prey look about most the ships, bantam looks like a flying vacuum cleaner Minmatar: Half finished construction site, patchwork ships because of being slaves with little to work with.
Another thing to look at is the naming of the ships. They have a good deal to do with the cultures, or at least some commonalities.
Gallente: Greco-Roman, traces back to democracy Amarr: Domination and Punishment Caldari: Animal names Minmatar: References to bodily harm :)
Anyway just some observation.

Edited by: Main on 06/08/2003 21:24:05 I think the ship designers didn't actually take into account any of newton's laws or any of the laws of physics at all...the textures on the thorax are very low resolution as well.
