I get disconnected from Eve if I go idle for more than about 5 minutes. This can be a real pain in the butt when I'm mining in my barge since the cycle times are so long.
I had this problem several months ago. It's still happening.
This happens on both my 98 box and my XP box (I have to use my XP box because of the video lag/bug in 98).
This happened several months ago on the old client as well as the new Cold War client.
I can play WoW, EQ2, DAoC, Anarchy Online, America's Army, Quake3, Counter-Strike, and a few other games without any internet problems at all, ever. No lag. No ping problems. No disconnects. The only program that has problems is Eve.
I've scanned for viruses with 3 different programs. I've checked my computers with 2 different spyware programs. I've reset the Winsock per Eve's technical support FAQ. Nothing was found and nothing has changed (not even spyware as I use a locked down version of FireFox to surf).
The time seems pretty consistant. After about 5 minutes of inactivity (and by inactivity I mean no information going back and forth between my client and Eve's server as it can happen while I am typing an Eve-Mail) I get disconnected.
If I'm mining ore and offloading my ship's cargo every few minutes then I'm fine. If I let my ship's cargo sit (knowing that its strip miners won't cycle again for several minutes) then I get disconnected. If I go afk in a station to get some food then I get disconnected. If I take too long typing out an Eve-Mail then I get disconnected.
I can stay connected by keeping the market window open and viewing price details from time to time. As long as I am doing something that sends data to the server I don't get disconnected.
Any ideas?
Anyone else have this happen to them?
Am I suppose to be disconnected for being idle after about 5 minutes? |

Hey.... Well I got the problem.. But it came with the Patch. ( call it a content patch again and ill start ripping something up ) So I guess there is something CCP ( Cant Code Properly)is not telling us. ( my guess is that they have made a inactivity monitor, to take the strain off the server. )

Well, I can say it's probably not an idle timer, as I've done plenty of afk hauler mining since the "content" patch ....being that is about all i can do since I'm lagging like crazy...and don't have windows xp

Do you mean this ? win 98(se)/win me 'graphics lag' thread I have switched to XP because of that. So that problem is gone, but now I have maybe the problem that people are talking about in this thread. When I run two clients, the one in the background usually crashes to desktop. I have two installations, both worked before the patch and I was able to run two clients simultanously, but now the one in the background ususually just crashes/timeouts whatever after a few minutes.

I've run 2 clients for about 6 months now without any problems, that is until Cold War came along. Was fine at first but now I get CTDs every 2 to 3 minutes, normally associated with warping but not exclusively so. Scanned for viruses and spyware/adware with no improvement. Unfortunately EVE is now unplayable.

I have the same problem after I intstalled cold war patch. I have already got disconnected from the server 5times in a hour, and when i lock npc/players nothing happens, turn off/on the mwd takes years etc etc. Never had these problems before in Eve.

Yup i run 2-3 accounts and since Cold War patch i have had this constantly, im getting really sick of it. its making it unplayable.
I have changed network cards, i have got a new router, replaced the cabling and done speed tests. Its 100% down to CCP i have no other trouble with anything else.
2 systems running Win2k pro and 1 running XP pro, it happens on all of them.
Yesterday was running 3 account fine for the first time since patch, then today back to CTD nightmare.

check if your internet connection drops when you are idle - eve doesn't transfer much data and if noone is chating/jumping it is possible that windows/your router/isp disconnects you

Tried this, left a web page on all night no problems, set a macro up to open windows whilst in station and it stayed on for 2 hours = couldn,t test any longer. But if I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING it just dies.
It can also happen when I load my 2nd AC the first one dies whilst loading, then the 2nd dies whilst re-loading the first, it's a real pain never did that before at all.

Yup i can confirm pretty much exactly the same thing, its not due to any hardware, drivers, router config, firewall or ISP. This is a 100% CCP issue, it only happens with EVE and only with this new patch.
Im sick of these ******* ******* messing with stuff that aint broke and to add insult to injury they then dont even mention they done anything when its completely apparent they have.

Try to ping a random host while you play eve. If that solves your problem it's just because eve is quiet on the network when no action in going on.

Hmmm, I'm not running two accounts. It sometimes happens even when I'm doing things. It just disappears, no warning no error message, just gone. Weird.

I joined the help and ship Eve channels so that I'd have lots of chat spam comming in at all times and that seems to have helped. I only crashed once and that was due to a completely different client bug. (I was randomly kicked to the desktop rather than losing connection to the server.)
I'll do some more testing and post what I find. In the mean time, if you're having a similar problem then it's definately worth trying to join a few high population chat channels and see if that doesn't help to keep your client connected.
Now if someone can get the client to stop randomly crashing to desktop and the video bugs ironed out then I may even renew my subscription.

MMMmmmm there's lots of software on downloads.com for pinging sites automatically, anyone had any experiance with this type of software, would it help keep Eve alive ???

they might think of this as a small dos attack unless you can randomize the site you are pinging. Or you can just do an infinet loop to one of your other computers on the same network. but yea ccp should really fix this amoung other bugs, like the one that you use the "To hangar and Refine" option and all your ore disapears.....

I am having the same problem with my Eve, except instead of 5 minutes idle it seems to be 2 or 3. I'm going to try opening some of those chat channels to see if that helps, however a fix would be nice.

This has always happened to me since I started Eve. Nothign to do witht he Patch. I think it was the lag issues CCP "fixed" that made it worse.

I had this problem during my first couple of weeks in eve. Then it disappeared. Then started for 2-3 days with EW patch and went. Now after Cold War is back and worse than ever. Dont worry people this has nothing to do with your pcs and internet connections etc. This is purely CCP. They will fix it eventually (perhaps) as they have done in the past, without ever explaining themselves.-

I think it has something to do with the client thinking that the server is down when you are idle. kinda like the client is getting no communication from server, oh server must be down I gotta autoclose.
I might try testing different scenarios and see what happens. but i think the only think that will prob fix this is if ccp adds something that checks the server connection to see if it really is down before disconnecting

If you've worked with one then you would never have made such an assed up remark so I'm about 99% sure you haven't.
And if that's the case then you won't be able to possibly fathom the shear size and complexity of putting together a game like Eve.
I'm having the same issue as you all but I will never attack the dev teams coding practices because I understand the issues that they are plagued with when adding content/code to a project of this size.
Give it a week or so more. I've found within my year and a half of playing eve that alot of issues tend to work themselves out after about 3 to 4 weeks after a big patch release. (ie. Castor, Exodus, etc)

I get disconnected during warping. I actually didnt have the problem before the latest patch. I could go across lots of systems on autopilot and everything would be fine. Now, I cant go across one system without crashing. I dont freeze though, the client just crashes to desktop instantly with no fuss. However, it does mean I cant do anything. Now, in only into my 3rd trial day and I have to say, im not getting a good impression of the game. I WAS going to buy it but now I probably wont.

All true (including "fixing itself" part in my limited experience) but that doesnt mean that its justified since peeps still pay for those useless weeks. Especially since its a recurring problem it is only less acceptable to be honest. Also please do not flame desperate players. We love the game and thats why we are driven to madness by these issues. The mere fact that, as YOU say, the game is broken for a few weeks after each ptach is more than reason enough for us to complain. What are you? a evs brother or something?

Point well taken..
I've no idea what a "evs brother" is tho...
It's just that I know what it's like to be on the recieving end of "mostly" deserved criticism from customers of various computer software I've been afiliated with and know the insane amount of frustration involved with "bug" hunting through heaps of code.
If I came off a bit too harsh then it was simply to provide a diferent prospective to this issue. Basically a bit of the dev's prospective. To us Eve is a game. To them it is their life. Telling a dev that his code sucks is akin to going over to his house and saying his children/pet/girlfriend/wife is disgustingly hideous. Probably not to that extreme but it is definately insulting to say the least when they have poured their heart and soul into their work.
But in the end you do have a valid point. People are paying for a service that they cannot use. Which in all fairness is unaceptable.
cheers

Having the same problem.
I went to the eve-online.com tech support site and tried the traceroutes they suggest.
I get to 157.157.139.10 just fine, at an average of 100ms. However, when I try to ping 157.157.62.26 it will go about 9 jumps, then it will start timing out. I don't know if this is the problem or not, I thought that 157.157.139.10 was the server address, so I have no idea why the other one is even on there.
Hope this helps someone.
