Erm... they go alphabetically through possible names as far as I know. They used to use female names, then ran out and switched to male names....
Maybe thats an old wives tale though, not like I'm an expert on hurricane naming

Hurricanes are a bit like wives.
All wet and wild when you meet them but they take the furniture on the way out

iirc one of the reasons they get ordinary names is to try and make them less scary, of course I could be wrong and someone, somewhere, gets paid $50k a year to make them up.
Anyway, wrong forum.
Moved.

I got curious about those names, and the first google hit for "hurricane names" was this.

As I understand it, the names rotate between female & male names annually, and start at the beginning of the alphabet each time it changes, and subsequent hurricanes get names for the next letter in the alphabet than the one before. eg Andrew, Borris, Charlie, Danny, Etc.

I always thought that, but they mix up male and female names in the same year. So you'll have something like Andrew, Bonnie, Charlie, Diane, etc. Then next year it starts off like Angela, Boris, Claudia, Dave, etc.

In the info page for kids (can't get more accesible info than that, can you? ) I linked above it says there are six sets of names each for the Pacific (A-Z, but the XYZ names, Xavier/Xina, York/Yolinda and Zeke/Zelda occur on three lists each) and the Atlantic (A-W). Names are retired if a storm turns out to be very devastating.

Perhaps alternative naming schemes might include such Hurricanes as:
- Hurricane "Holy Moly" - Hurricane "What the hell was that?" - Hurricane "Wasn't that the neighbours house?" - Hurricane "I know where you live"
And the venerable:
- Hurricane "Hope you have insurance!"
