Just wondering what other people use.
I have been using a thorax but am thinking of trying a blackbird.
You see I warped right into as group of NPC piraters (within 4k of them) and they scrambled my warp. It was an incredible fight, I lost two of my 6 wasp, but I did lived, with 0 armor and 3 structure.
This was a little to close and got me thinking that I might want a ship that could outrun the priates if I run into this probalem again. But I would still like a cruiser so I have some fire power.
I looked over all the cruisers and was thinking blackbird. with 6 med slots a could equip a scaner, a shield booster and 4 ABs for when I wanted to run (maybe switch a AB for a descrambeler). Over drive in the two lower slots. With what ever power is left over, put long range weapons in the high slots, so I could "Kite" when I could.
I know I could just counter the warp, but the Thorax only has 3 med slots, seems a waste.

Are you planning on exploring AND fighting at the same time? or just exploring/scouting?
One method you can use is to create an alternate character that is designed for navigation skills.
Just fly around in the newbie ship and bookmark interesting locations.
If you get attacked or worse, pod killed, you dont really suffer any loss since you did not train any skill points or spend money on the alternate character.
Just an idea.

For pure exploration? Easy... a Vigil. 3 off-the-shelf afterburners and 3 off-the-shelf overdrives gives you insanely high speed and maneuverability. And if you get destroyed, you can buy and equip a new one for a couple hundred thousand ISK. You can't actually fight anything, but as long as you're fast on the warp button you're pretty safe.
Plus, the Vigil is THE most enjoyable ship to fly in the game. I use one for agent missions loaded out with 3 ABs and 3 nanofibers, and it literally turns in place at full 1500+ m/sec speed. One of the few ships that actually feels responsive to fly...

what explorers used to do was to leave ship in safe place, and then use pod to seach system, Pirates (at least the NPC kind) will leave pods alone.

Jesus id not search in a pod, too slow!
Think id just use a shuttle, nice and cheap, fast and not much of a target really, mostly its only gate campers ud have to worry about!

love the atron one of the best looking frigates in the game and pretty quick with it

I explore in a vexor...
Not the fastest ship in the game, but is quite capable of holding it's own against several 8K pirates at once. So its good to explore and collect the smaller spawns in one go.
Isnt exploring what the vexor was designed to do anyway?

I use a rupture with 2 x MWD and a warp stabilizer in mids, overdrives and cpu in low, and misc guns/turrets on top (though i rarely need them). I used a stabber, but moved to the rupture for the drone space. Fast as hell with the stacking MWDs, and can be over 4000m/s in about 4 seconds.
