There seems to be so many other things that could be done to speed up the game if that is an issue for some people. Why nerf the graphics? The graphics is one of the most impressive features of the game, heck, you've won awards for the graphics.
The level of detail is now crummy, my ship is a white dot.
The webifier now has no graphics nor the warp core scrambler... what the heck? Are you going to slowly remove graphics for various weapons elements over time so people don't notice? Is that the strategy?
Ship are being reduced to icons. I don't want an icon, I want to see my ship.
I understand completely if the need is there to speed up things but is seems you are taking the lazy way out instead of incorporating changes in the client control panel that would make some of this a players option. Only you however, can bring back the missing graphics for the aforementioned items.
It seems the special effects are getting slimmer and slimmer and slimmer. Don't like it. I don't want to play a 2D game with icons. Not everyone has a Geforce 2 card. ;-)
Why don't you do something about the millions of spam containers lying around space if lag is a concern. Give them a certain lifetime. Large containers - 90 days, medium 60 day, small 30 days... or something similar so they don't just stay around forever ad nauseum.
Don't take away the awesome graphics and special effects though please.

Well that's good news!!
I do miss the webby graphic though. I can't believe they've resorted to taking effects OUT of the game. What tools.

Level of Detail.
In the last patch they added LOD scaling so when you zoom out ships look less detailed. --
