Hi, quick question for anyone in the know. I have been away from the game for a good while and am just recently returned - pre mining barges was when I was last fully active.
Normally i would use a megathron while mining, setup with a full compliment of Miner 2's, now what i was wondering is if Mining barges are going to provide me with a better return of ore or if I would be better off just sticking with the Megathron for my mining exploits?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

mining barge = LOONG TRANING.
Small = Worthless
Medium = more or less the same as your mega, But with Spec crystals and skills better!
Large = Now thats actually the only true intresting ship of the barges, and the only one with just the minimum of defence capabilities you need for like 0.5 mining alone.

I dont mind doing the training aslong as the investment in time is worth it. Whats the ore collection like on a large barge? Presumably better than the Medium barge and my Mega?

with mining 5 , astro 5 and barge 5 with standard strip miner i get 970 ore units per miner + 10 harvy drones with mining drone level 5 which is basicly a 4th strip miner, belts dont last long when ur in one of these.

With 3 modulated Strip Miners II it's like 1131 m3 per minute. Plus 10 Mining Drones 1 it get's extra 150-180 m3 per minute. Harvester drones are currently totally useless with such a prices unless you mine a lot in safe space or mine in 0.0 (much better on Dominix then).

After reading the reply's i feel a bit of a fool....
You see i got a small barge last night..... Still, I can get 825 unit's every 2 mins which is better than a Vexor anyday :)
My main question was about defence. It seems i can only fit 2 drones and we all know thats not going to kill alot of rats. Am I just going to have to do it the hard way? Flee, return with some guns and send in the barge again?

it shouldn't be more than a week or so before you're in a mid barge, and it's got room enough for 4 medium attack drones and 2 mining drones.
i've spent lots of time in 0.5-0.7 in it, and the drones can take out most spawns w/o problems. I've only got drones IV, and it's been no big deal.
just last night did i take my first coveter on her maiden voyage. It was worth the wait.

For defence of your barge carry small or medium drones. Fit a sensor booster in the mid slot for a quicker lock. It works for me in 0.5 belts.
