Run ALL tutorials.
Don't fly what you can't afford to loose
Trust nobody, not even your brother
Be friendly and open minded and ask questions. With that you will get loads of good replies.
EDIT:
Don't come to the forums whining. Just cause he can't do something like he wants doesn't mean the game is broken. |

If it looks like a great opportunity, it's probably a trap. Missions are unimportant and nothing more than a career. So is mining, as well as being boring. Google is your friend. Teal deer will kill you. Bigger is not better. |

If you are seeing a deal in the market check to see if there is a minimum buy amount. If there is it is very possible a scam (see margin trading scams)
Make sure your clone is up to date
Use EVEMON (google it) to plan your training (it also reminds you to update your clone).
Never use the 'trade window' , insist on using a contract instead (they only cost 10,000 isk)
Don't dual tank (the only exception is using a damage control module).
Learn at least the very basics of the Directional Scanner (set range to max, angle to max and scan while looking for combat probes and other ships)

Do the Career Agent missions for free ships and skillbooks. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Career_Agents
Don't use both short range weapons and long range weapons on the same ship. You'll end up doing less damage at both ranges. |

Learn from your mistakes. You will lose ships, learn from that. You will be taken advantage, learn from that. Your path in EVE is your choice, however someone else's path is to profit from you, learn from that. Fly safe, pay attention, fly what you can afford to lose. And in closing, if you lose a ship, or isk, or anythin remember that you are at least partly at fault, and never whine in the forums. Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much. |

Silly me for forgetting it in my first reply.
And actually ashamed nobody else didn't mention it.
The most important thing in EVE is....
having fun while playing.
So, play in such way that YOU are having fun. If this does mean others say you are playing it wrong, ignore them. |

Dont try to explain everything to him or show it to him right away. One of the mistakes i have done over and over trying to get real life friends involved is that i constantly try to explain everything at once which has just left them feeling overwhelmed and takes the fun out of atcually exploring the options on their own. If he asks questions, answear them, but dont try to push things on him. Do as other epeople have suggested and have him run the tutorials, get blown up a couple of times and give him a bit of ISK so he can play on the market and dont feel he is back to 0 when he looses his first destroyer/cruiser/whatever.

Don't worry too much about blowing up.
Always assume you're gonna blow up on any given venture, and plan for it.
When someone blows you up, send them a message and ask 'em about why you lost. Most of them will tell you. |

PVP is everywhere, even Miners PVP against each other, they just do it without weapons. Do not join EVE expecting any breaks from anyone.

For got to add in my first post:
There is no such thing as non-consensual PvP in EVE; the second you log into the game you have agreed to the possibility of being blown up by another player.
And it is just pixels so don't be afraid to lose anything since you can almost always get it back. |

There are no stupid questions other then the one you didn't ask. So if he has a question, he should ask him. Likely one of the vets had that same question when he was still a newb. Buddy invite offer Corporation Recruitment |

-Don't trust anyone who you don't know well in real life. Only trust those who live close enough for you to walk over and kick them in the junk if they screw you over ingame.
-If your spidey senses are telling you it's a scam or a trap, it probably is. There's plenty of scams and traps going around. If someone is trying to make a deal with you and it seems far more complicated than it has to be, it's probably a scam.
-Never use the Trade window unless you completely trust the other person. A LOT of scams happen through the Trade window. So when dealing with people you don't trust, use contracts.
-If you make or are interested in accepting a contract, READ THE ****ING CONTRACT CAREFULLY! There is no reason to rush. If an individual is trying to rush you into accepting something, probably a scam.
-People lie. Deal with it.
-99% of all courier contracts are a scam.
-Be careful where and around whom you fly your expensive shiny toys.
-Nobody knows everything.
-Be wary of "armchair generals". Players who talk a big game and presume to speak with authority, but have never actually done the thing they're talking about.
-If you're in a semi large PvP fleet, shut the f*** up and do what your FC instructs the fleet to do, regardless if you agree with his decisions or not. From the FC's vantage point, he typically has a lot more information/experience on the situation than individual pilots do.
-If you have your own corp, you run it as a benevolent or malevolent dictator. Diplomatic corps don't function well. Never give out roles, hanger access or permissions to anyone who doesn't specifically need them. If John Doe is asking for access to corp hanger X, he better have a good ****'ing reason for asking for it. Otherwise the answer should be no.
-All ships die, sooner or later. Ships are not unique snowflakes to be treasured nor should you have any emotional attachment to them. They WILL be destroyed eventually.
-Recruitment scams happen. Some corps/alliances are so well known for recruitment scamming that you would have to be deaf and blind not to know who the common culprits are.
-The EFT is an amazing tool and something worth looking into. There are even apps for smartphones. I like to use an app called Neocom on my iPhone.
-Suicide ganking happens in highsec. It just does and there's nothing wrong or against the rules about it. Accept that fact. Be wary of carrying high value items in your ship around trade systems and trade routes. Carrying a PLEX in your cargohold is very risky and often a target for suicide gankers.
-Wrecks have no value according to Concord. Just because you blew up that NPC or player doesn't mean you're entitled to salvaging that wreck. Anyone with a salvaging module can swing by and take it without consequence. Wreck salvaging is first come first serve. Accept that fact. Trolling is like art. Anyone can finger paint, but it takes true talent to create a masterpiece. |

This.
Anybody who says. You must do "x" or you must do "y" is a moron.
EVE is a game. You pay to play that game.
So you decide how you want to play the game in such way that you are having fun. It's your money after all. I had the same run in with a null-sec alliance leadership person who was forcing me into his game style. So I said, fine if you donate 6 PLEX each month to me to keep my accounts subscribed...He quickly left chat. Buddy invite offer Corporation Recruitment |
