I come on my pc after coming back from work and i find that my resolution has been changed and i find a notepad file on my Desk top saying

:) :):)
Now i dont know if this is about the 5 barges i killed 2day and some noobie raven pilot i took to hull today in my retribution but i think people are taking the game too serious.
And id like to know, if it is eve related, how someone managed to find out my ip from connecting to eve.
I feel pretty strongly that this is eve related as i dont play any other games online and lets face it there are very very bad losers in this game (take extra note of the word "losers")
I ask the eve community as CCP seems pretty busy atm and seems they are neglecting my emails.
How can i prevent further attacks? i have outpost firewall and a norton anti-virus.

Edited by: Jessa on 13/07/2005 22:31:54 is it possible that someone in eve has access to your msn or email?
That said, it may just be some nub hacker who's mistyped an IP

If you use any other Website / Forums / TS / IRC server it would be very easy for someone to gain access to your IP. AFAIK, it would be impossible for them to gain access through these forums or through the actual game.

not happy about this i must say - i play this game to take my mind off whats happening in real life - i really dont want\need this crap atm.
Any advice on how to prevent this guy from making any more damage?
Guess the guys couldnt handle the game mechanics and thought he'd try and win things out of game. I personally am no hacker dont know alot about how this stuff works, but its very cowardice. --------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Blydchyld on 13/07/2005 22:42:28 well the only way to realy stop anyone that either knows how to or wants to is to do the following.
1. Call ISP 2. Cancel account 3. Play cards, 1 player games, go outside.
ie, dont be online.
Its a sad world, and tbh it sounds like a sub-7 varient. If it was some one that wanted to upset you then they would have deleted your registry and rebooted. I think its some one pulling your leg that has access to your machine.

I would be more worried that the file has ended up on your pc desktop - check your perimeter secrurity for the network that pc is on, AV & spyware check that pc and get some sort of personal firewall as well.
Sites such as www.grc.com & www.sarc.com can do simple testing on your perimeter and there is a leaktest facility @ grc - although not perfect - can make sure that your personal firewall is not 'leaking' too.

Do a full os reinstall, if your computer has been hacked then that's the only way of making sure that there isn't any bad stuff left behind. Preferably do it behind a hardware firewall, makes it more complicated to hack your computer.
Another note :

I doubt it was anything you did today, it has probably taken some time to get the ip and hack your computer.

I don't know enough to give sage advice, tbh, but well meaning advice can at worst be something to ignore.
Antivirus, firewall, start checking for spy/malware. It does sound like someone stuffed sugar in your computers gasoline tank, though.
formatting the harddrive could be an idea. That being said, I concur, though - contact your ISP and report it. One thing is that it's harrassment, it's also illegal, and something I'd say most ISPs would take seriously.
Assuming you don't do any Remote desktopping or similar, there is at least a chance your ISP will be able to tell you what happened.
This is guesstimating, but to my knowledge, short of hacking the EVE servercluster itself, there's no way of obtaining your IP via anything game related, so I doubt it's gone that way. Has to be something outside of it.
Of course, if you've recently opened any email attachments from weird senders, then you might have the answer there :s
Format seems like an idea. And yes, if this is something happening over that you shot someone down in EVE, I'm disgusted at it. My sympathies, I hope you'll get to the bottom of it.

You don't even have to open an attachment to give away your IP. Loading an image in a html mail is enough, the server will simply log IPs that have accessed that image. Using images is also a popular way for junkmailers to verify if e-mail adresses are active (using image urls unique for each adress), so it's a very good idea to filter out images. Good services/programs have this funtion enabled by default, other that have it (like hotmail) require you to activate it manually.

Edited by: Rasitiln on 14/07/2005 02:50:34 Routers are considerd a firewall if setup properly, my computer sits behind a router running openBSD i made myself, since OpenBSD is probly the most secure OS out their (out of the box) and I run eve on my gentoo linux machine (not very well TBH very unstable after this last patch), IM next to impossible to "hack". On windows its quite easy, especially if your running IE have no virus protection, sounds like it was something like a lame trojan that allowed him to back door your system, probly subseven or a variant. You could have easily gotten what ever it is by going to a site that someone gave you a link to using IE as its very insecure. My suggestion is reformat, then patch and put on avg, (as its easier on computer reasources then norton and is free ) use a diffrent browser like mozilla firefox and get a hardware firewall like a router that allows you to use nat routing and give yourself a internal IP not a external DMZed one, if your routers setup fine you should never have this problem again.

you need a network user security with logging system that way you should be able to disallow poeple and if they do get on then it is logged and should have ip tree back to they host machine if they try to cover their ip its should still take you to they isp ip.. set up a user security with encoding and that stuff someone else would be able tell more about that stuff

kessah please allow me to give you some tips to avoid this issues in the future.
- Do a full reinstall of your machine (you'll have to format your hard drive for this) Personally I leave the C: drive only for the OS and the programs wich means that I can reinstall my PC without loosing my personal files (photos, mpe, videos, etc)
- Keep windows up to date (I recommend using XP profesional) You can use manual updates (Control Panel -> Windows update) or activate automatic update
- Install Mozzilla or Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/ (don't use Internet explorer/Outlook unless you have to, but keep it up to date)
- Get a adware/spyware remover I use AD-Ware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
- Get a Personal Firewall (I use Norton )
- Get a Antivirus software (I use Norton) and keep it up to date (the firewall too)
Send me an eve-mail if you need help getting these programs or if you need any more tips

Incredibly childish and you know its just some script kiddy cause an actual hacker would not do this over a game and would certainly not type 1337...
It isn't difficult to get into a computer but your conscience should stop you.
This did it once with me but it was a stupid mistake on my part, forgot to set a password on a remote desktop program.

Simple solution, get a hardware firewall (i.e. a box your net connection goes through) and don't rely on a free software firewall alone.
apart from that don't get paranoid its not good for your health :)

not much choice i'm afraid backp and reinstall including a format if u can, virus scan the backed up stuff before you install again.
Ps u use ts? ,mutiple times i have seen people DOS attack a ts sever over a game, no idea why you would but it's enevitable that there will be pasty white nerds playing a game like this..

Edited by: Aitrus on 14/07/2005 21:47:05 If you've been rooted, the best bet is to do a clean format. The comp is compromised and you can't trust it until you do.
Hardware firewall (router) Software firewall Anti-Virus
Using an alternate browser is a good idea (I recommend Firefox)
If you can, download the redistributable version of Service Pack 2 before formatting. get it on disk, unplug your internet and clean install windows. immediately apply SP2 before giving the comp an internet connection. The built in firewall isn't the best, but it's better than nothing and you won't be vulnerable to older worms.
EDIT: I have two physical drives in my comp. One is only for Windows and program installation, the other is for all data and backups. This means I can reinstall anytime I want without losing anything.

If you have a DVD-R at hand (they cost almost nothing now, you can get a good bulk packaged one for the cost of a game, and they are quite nice to have) I think it would be pretty safe burning most of the files you want to save. At least with media files and non self-extracting archives, just make sure to scan all archives before unpacking them. Executables like installers should be pretty safe as well, but again, scan everything before copying back to the fresh install.
Also, don't rely on a single AV package, there are good free options that don't require installs and so won't interfere with your main program, for example Panda's online ActiveScan (one of the few things I use that require IE), and MicroWorld Antivirus Toolkit. Using those regularly in addition to your normal daily scans should increase the chance of malware being detected.

I'm running a NETGEAR router with a hardware firewall backed up by ZoneAlarm Firewall.
That stops anyone passively invading but only you can control and virus-check the files you download and open.
I seriously doubt it was anyone in Eve.

Sad news kessah
Try this freeware and see if it can find anything.
I would suggest to use an all-in-one package from Symantec or McAfee if you want to spend some money on security. And reformatting the HD and a clean install would also be a good thing to do in this case. Another option is to get a second HD do a clean install there and scan the infected drive.

Format a floppy disk with "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" option enabled, then reboot from it and do it the old way? ^^;;
think the winXP install allows you to format the partitions, too... but not sure, been a while.

Yes i constantly crave attention and cheap laughs from complete strangers on the internet. Looks like im the only one doing the "think first then write" routine.
As far as emotions go, people get emotional over different things. Personally i cant see how anyone would get emotional over either of the two. After all, in both instances all that was lost was time and theres plenty of that. ______________________
