Yeah yeah I know everybody says retriever, but I'm paranoid! Also I want a miner that nobody can f*** with! I know it is gonna take a little while, so I have a good bit of time to decide, but I can already afford them. All I need are the skills to fly them.
Also I do plan on mining in lower security. If I had enough drone security, could I do something like that and be ok? Or should I just forget that and stick to decent security places and just use a retriever? The idea of the retriever is that I could just strip-mine every dang mineral I see in a belt really fast, right? I dunno, I kinda like the idea of going after more valuable things. But can no miner have enough security? I would think that with good enough drones and that 50 m3 drone bay, I would be good to go. But it'll take me a while before I actually get my drone skill up enough to use the bouncers and stuff like that.
Gah what should I do? I wanna know the next step! |

Personally I'd say Retrievers down to 0.5 (2 light scout drones is enough for those rats) and a Venture in lowsec (rats aren't the biggest problem there) |

Rule of a thumb: Retriever for solo in well defended areas (this isn't high sec), Procurer for solo everywhere else, Covetor for fleet ops where you have dedicated haulers, Venture for ninja- or gas mining
Usually, you can get away with Retriever for everything except Venture's tasks, but do expect that from time to time, you'll attract a suicide ganker, as it's hard to effectively tank. |

Covetor in losec is a bad idea. Really solo mining in losec is a bad idea. The rats in losec are not the problem (other people are however).
Retr. In hisec for solo mining bc of large ore bay. Covetor in hisec for corp mining ops. Anything in losec/nullsec where you are secure both from rats and non-corp/alliance mates. Venture for gas mining.
Losec ores aren't valuable enough to be worth the risk of losing your ship, lowering yield for tank, and having downtime due to hostiles. Plus there's the logistical issue of either transporting minerals out of losec or more into losec to be able to build stuff with.
Tl;dr stay with the retriever or get together with some corp before you switch.
Edit: "lower" security is not low security necessarily. So clarification: completely untanked the retriever and hobgoblin 1s are perfectly capable of handling themselves afk in .5 security space and above. You'll switch roids faster than the rats will kill you. |

Gah what should I do? I wanna know the next step! Covetor is not the more survivable ship. Procurer is. the 503m drone bay is meant to hold 5 light combats and 5 mining drones, or 5 medium drones if 100% combat is preferred. advantages of mining barges are as follows; procurer = lowest yield, best tank, average ore hold retriever = average yield, average tank, best ore hold covetor = best yield, average tank, average ore hold
Procurer is safest if you expect to get ganked.
Retriever can hold the most, so best for solo mining, less trips to station to unload.
Covetor is highest yield, best when working in a fleet with a OCRA or hauler.
T2 versions are just boosted more in the same roles.
At low skills the yield differences are very small as the yield bonus that sets them apart are per level of mining barge skill. So at mining barge 1 they are almost identical yield. If you are planing to solo mine either go retriever, as it will give you the best isk/hr as you will not need to warp to station as often to unload. Or go with the procurer for more safety as it tanks like a battleship, but you will make less isk as you will spend more time warping back and fourth from station. Covetor is mostly only worthwhile for fleet ops when you can maximize on the extra yield without worrying about ore storage. Also fleet boosts really make that yield difference noticeable. |

Everything I have read here makes good sense. The Covetor has a great yield even with TI Miners I can go two cycles before I have to Jet Can at about 7000M3 per 6 minutes. With the TII Modulated I have to Jet every cycle. I don't go below 0.5 in my Covetor.
As for Ninja Mining I used to use the Procurer but now am very sold on the Venture. Big thing with the Venture is to not Jet can it holds 5000 M3 in the Ore Hold out of the box. I use it go get Hemorphite and if I get pies or Rats on me I just jump to another belt. My skills are not great but the Covetor is a money maker for me at 10+ Mill an hour solo hauling myself with a 27,000M3 Mammoth. The Venture one jump into low sec hauling back through a single gate is 5-6 Mill an hour at best but My TII venture was 8 Million, has +2 Warp Core Stability and My Covetor is over 3 times that to replace.
Risk vs Reward. I like "white Nuckle mining" in low sec despite the lack of income. Never have to worry about a shortage of roids and keeps my scanning skills and situational awareness sharp.
