Very simple question this: what is the point of planets and moons in the game? Obviously they need to be there for reality purposes, but do they actually perform any function?

1. Looks nicer, also more realistic. 2. Oh yea, you can mine moons, if I am not wrong. Not sure about planets. 3. Future implementation could make warping more complicating, e.g. if you align wrongly and see a big round object after a few seconds, you will simply get a new ship and wake up from your clone chamber? 4. Eve is an evolving game, i.e. newer features are added from time to time since this is a big game to program, so who knows, one day we all can live on planets and have planetary wars like in Supremacy, etc. I mean simple strategy based planetary wars, etc. 5. Like they say, better to have and not to need it than to need it and be without it.
then again, I can be wrong. HTH. ----------------------------------- Eve is all about Darwinism: 1. Only the fittest survives. 2. Only the paranoid survives. 3. Only the pretty survives. 4. Only the rich survives. |

If there weren't any you'd be asking why there aren't any planets and moons in space. They're essential for the illusion. Also, Player Owned Starbases can be built to mine the moons. Can't have moons without planets though.

Why answer a question when you have to put disclaimers in saying you may be wrong??
Planets have moons. Moons can be harvested by Player Owned Stations to make high tech components needed to build tII items.

They perform the function of eye-candy. Supposedly CCP is adding features involving them, like mining the moons and maybe colonizing the planets, who knows.
What's the purpose of the brightly-colored nebulae you see in every system?

Had several points and some of them are right and some can be wrong... ----------------------------------- Eve is all about Darwinism: 1. Only the fittest survives. 2. Only the paranoid survives. 3. Only the pretty survives. 4. Only the rich survives. |

after kali planets will also serve as extra systems where you'll have stations on the planet surface and you can fly trough the atmospheer. (this is from the last fanmeeting in 2004)

Because staring at empty black space with a few stars would get very boring eventually. Kind of the same reason that hardly any of the ships in game are perfectly symmetrical. After hours of playing it gets boring. Sacrifice a little realism for playability perhaps? ---------------------

You do realize that moon mining has been in the game for over 8 months, right?

Actually, I'd love to have an option to turn off the blue/red/whatever nebulae and just have black space and stars. Most of the time I just see the same damn nebulae anyway since I don't travel much out into different regions.

Planets are:
1. Places to put asteroid belts. 2. Places to put moons (for POSs). 3. Places to put outposts. --
Want your POS to make money? Call me up. I've designed POSs that make upwards of 50m a day. |

So basically planets don't serve any purpose other than to have moons, which do serve a purpose, just about.
That's all I needed to know, thanks - I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some key part of the game as there are so many planets and moons about the place.

The new outposts are built at planets, just as POSs are built at moons, so they do indeed serve a purpose :)

That makes sense if what the other poster said about Kali is true. First you need a POS to build an outpost and since the outpost is near a planet you would need an outpost to build a planetary base. After all I don't think something the size of a Raven / Apoc could actually "fly" you would have to switch to a landing craft at the outpost. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.
