Just before the end of Beta, CCP announced that they would need to keep rebooting the server once a day due to *insert any reason you want here*.
My question is why? and why is it still the case. Its a pain the the ass, as you miss a hours gameplay at the weekends and the way the market is set up at the mo, it means the the majority of the player base cant exploit the current market features (which im sure most of you know what im on about) because were all at work.
I understand the need to have outages for updates etc, but i cant for the life of me figure out why this needs to be done every day.
If they need to continue having these outages then why not do the non-patching reloads during the early hours? Will these outages now be a daily event for the life of the game, or is CCP trying to fix it so they only ever need to bring down the servers for patches etc?

It's so that you dont end up with horrendous lag as the log files fill up... also it's when they do other maintenance and the respawning of trade items and roids I think.
I think UO still has a daily downtime and that's been running how many years?
One hour out of 24 isn't a lot... -------------------------------------------

Yes downtime is very much needed if your on at all close to when downtime happens and a couple hours before on some days you'll notice your laggin all over the place the game just run's like complete crap a few hours before downtime on certain days then as soon as servers come back up all the problems are gone.
I would bet this game wouldn't last 3 full days being online without a reboot with everything the databases do on those machines it's gotta get bad even after a day...
i mean think about it everything u look at in the market is a database entry of some kinda i'm thinking every little value of item per region per catageory....
there's some kind of entry for every little person that buy's 1 unit of tritanium or sells this or changes price on this item to this or takes away all the supply of this item for this region ect that's alot of little things getting added and deleted i'm sure 100's of times a min or more depending how many players are on at that moment.
After so long there server's have to be getting beat up especially on those days that we used to get 6k ppl on and earlier on in the night then normal u would start to see the market lag kick in with transactions taking longer and longer imagine all these little things happening over and over a million+ times a day for 2 or 3 days i think there servers would catch on fire :).
Oh well again the server downtime is very needed and is it really that bad to have 1 hour of downtime yes i know it cut's into some ppl's playing times but u gotta understand if they left the server's up for your gameing time with no downtime u maybe able to play just fine that first day but the next day or 2 your little one hour that u usually lost would turn into your whole playing time because it would be so crappy to play u would probly just log off or chat if u could.
I'm sure at some point thoe this will end up turning into some kind of a 15min reboot ect cause i really doubt it takes an hour to restart the machines i'm guessing there doing other server side tweaks that we don't see like server side patches ect...
populating the markets but maybe at some point this could be done automatic or once the game supposedly goes full player driven meaning no NPC buy/sell orders like i think it's sposed to most of this will no longer be needed.
Well hope this helps u think more about what goes on in the game we would all like a shorter/no downtime but right now especially it's just not possible.

This brought to mind an old Dev Blog that I read:
<QUOTE> 06 June 2003
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Continuous reseeding Been captivated by a book called Blackbox by Nick Walker these last evenings, so I completely forgot to blog. Otherwise I've been looking at making reseeding of various NPC stuff continuous. There are some guys already 'playing' the reseeds which is kind of immersion breaking. Looking into it with Jśrundur, our DB guy, how to make this friendly on the SQL. Once this is out, there will be at least one less reason for scheduled downtimes each and every day.
</QUOTE>
This could imply that the one hour of downtime was something they plan to someday be rid of. Or could be idle chatter :)

Coming from a software developers background, on "server" based machine noless, I'd have to guess at the following:
1 - The database gets cleaned up & backed up during the downtime. I would imagine there are some serious "cleanup" scripts that are run that require exclusive access to the database.
2 - There are some leaks (memory and otheriwse) in the servers themselves, and a reset is required to keep them operating properly. Leaks could be one of the many reasons things get "laggy".
3 - Global downtime makes it easy to apply server-side patches. I also would guess that server side patches can get rolled out at other times, and that's why you sometimes get a "server not responding" message.
I'm sure there are a variety of other reasons, but that would require more knowledge about the database & servers, and frankly I just don't care all that much. Downtime for me is between 4:00am and 5:00am, and I need sleep more than I need to play the game at that time. :)
