After Cold War patch, but before Tuesday's patch, drones would not autoaquire targets.
Now, they do.
This sucks, because once a drone auto-aquires, say, Target A, and you then tell them to attack Target B, they will move very slowly towards Target B.
When you're in an ishtar, and your target is 40km away, this is a huge pain, forcing you to scoop the drones, relaunch, and then tell them to attack again. This is compounded further by the drone humping problem.
I expect drone humping would be somewhat more difficult to fix, but can we please make it so the drones don't auto-aquire? Or, say, only auto-aquire when you don't have anything locked, or if you are jammed?
Nevermind the complex issues....

Actually you can make drones behave better. Just gang someone (corp member f. ex.) They don't have to be with you, just in the same gang. Now your drones won't auto aquire, but only attack the next target you tell them to or the next target you activate a module on. Otherwise they will slowly return to your ship. Just use your guns to direct your drones from target to target.
This behaviour is a bi-product of a fix CCP implemented a while ago, to make sure your drones would not attack gang members.
Imo this should be the way drones always behave. It makes NO sense to have them go in 7 different directions and attack what they feel like. It seriously limits a drone carrying pilots ability to do PvE.

You forgot the part where the Rats now have a serious hard on for drones and they all turn their attention on them and blow them up.

Despite what you and others have said, this problem has not happened to me post patch (ishtar pilot too :P). I always allow attacking group to lock on to me first (red flashing boxes) before launching drones, and I always have done. Perhaps this is why I only lose drones when I (or occasionally they) behave like an ass?

It would be nice to have 3 Different AI settings for the drones.
Passive - Will not attack unless told to do so. Defensive - Will auto aquire and attack targets which aggress you. Offensive - Automatically engages targets.
I find it hard to believe that drones would lack simple AI in the era eve is set in.

I didn't ignore the problem with drones in complexes, I mentioned it at the bottom of my post.
However, I've only seen that problem in complexes, not had it in normal space unless a rat gets too far out of it's optimal, then it will relock, and get a drone.
I'll try the gang thing, thank you for the suggestion. Does the gangmamber have to be in the same system, or do you simply have to be in a gang at all?

Dionysus has a very good point the npc's now seem to go after your drones more than you these days, cant remember the amount of drones i lost.
I like Zach's idea too surely this should be simple to do.

Confirmed that the gang trick works.
If you keep an alt logged in anywhere in the galaxy, and gang him, your drones aren't so.... adventurous, and hence more easily controllable.
Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it.
