Of our new puppy we found on our porch Saturday morning. Living out in the country I am used to the occasional animal dump and generally call or drop them off at the appropriate rescue (have gotten everything from a goat, and chickens to a ferret not to mention the more normal cats and dogs) . This was the first 7-8 week old drop off most things have been months to years older and the wife has decided she wants to keep him so we keep him. He is a lab/lab mix and all black. When we brought him in he was skinny and a bit tired. Now after a worming followed by a couple days of food and sleep he is giving my 3yo golden/hound mix a run for her money. The little guy is still a bit thin but he has quit gulping down food and actually leaves some in the bowl to come back for later. The bad part he is like a toddler only worse and unless he is sleeping I need eyes on him to make sure he is not chewing on something he should not (I expect to lose at least one pair of flip flops) or looking for a spot inside to do what should be done outside. |

That's probably how he ended up on your doorstep. |

As a lab owner and enthusiast I wholeheartedly recommend getting him several things to chew on. They're spastic dogs when they're young and they mature quite slowly, so they constantly need to be stimulated by something. A big rawhide bone or rope and some pig ears will keep all your shoes, chairs, and couches safe. I speak from experience and I've yet to lose a single pair of shoes. The worst thing Marduk has ever done to my shoes was habitually untie my shoestrings.
Since you live in the country you probably have plenty of space; let him run and play with him often. He'll love you for it and he'll need it to burn off that excess energy. At least an hour a day of outdoor playtime should suffice, whether it be multiple times during the day or all at once.

I have a lab mix and have gone through several of these rope toys. Well worth the investment. You may also want to pick up some bitter apple spray as well. I had to spray down my bookshelf to save them from her Zymurgist Community Representative CCP NA, EVE Online Contact Us at http://support.eveonline.com/pages/petitions/createpetition.aspx |

+1 for the rescue. Koodos to you and your wife. Some days you're the bug, and some days your the windscreen. -á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á And some days, you're just a man with a gun. |

Sorry I have not replied back but I have been busy. We already have a 3yo golden/hound mix so I am very familiar with the energy level. I have about an acre back yard fenced in down to the pond edge with several more acres surrounding and behind the pond so he has plenty of roam to run. Luckily the 3yo is a fixed female but has come to think of him as her responsibility. I still have to watch for him but she plays with him and has guided him on how to do things. Not being an expert at forums and a bit older I screwed up the pics. I have a couple on Facebook but it seems I linked them wrong. Guess I need a Photobucket or something. |

thats cool. I understand that people ditch animals. Especially on an acreage people drop off anything, like its some animal dump.
I found myself in a situation to adopt these two kittens -- some jerk dumped a litter on the acreage. Couldn't catch them as they would run away and vanish into the bushes. Throughout the month they were all hunted by coyote. I was only able to get two of them before the rest vanished from the seasonal conditions or wildlife.
after nursing them back from the brink of death they're hugely happy and adventurous, sometimes their nagging for attention gets annoying. I'm not too fond of cats. but they really like to jump up on your back and sit on your shoulders as you walk around, or they'll wake you up from a nap licking your face or hands.
you guys decide on a name for your pup? |

Bitter Apple spray works pretty good.
DO NOT use diluted hot sauce (cyan pepper stuff)! I tried doing that as a home made deterant and it ate the finish off of my mahogany desk.
I was able to clean some stains off my garage floor with it though so it wasnt a total loss i guess :D |
