You don't even lose your stuff when you die. Sounds a bit like WoW to me. So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.

At most I'd just keep training my Eve char and come back to it whenever I felt like it. No point in quitting Eve now after so much time and effort into it

As such they're currently envisaging around 30-50% of the map as under PvP conditions at any one time, though they've said it might vary dependant on testing. Edit: Only recently started following it myself, but I'm a great fan of anything from the age of sail, so I'll be giving it a try.
