Hey guys...
Forum n00b here with a question...
Time to sound off!
A buddy and I are in the process of forming a new corporation. We, like all founders, want the corporation to be the best that it can be.
We would like to tap into the high level of experience that some of you have with corporations in EVE, as this is our first attempt.
So, what makes a corporation great? Likewise, what makes a corporation suck? If you had one thing that you could add or change about your current corp, what would it be?
Here's your chance to be heard!!!
Please speak up!
Thanks...

-Small enough that everyone knows everyone else.
-Selective for mature, independent personalities who will willingly help each other out. Last but not least, they should not suck at the game.
-Very few formal rules and very little superfluous formal structure--this is a game that people choose to play part-time for their own pleasure, and that means an effective organization won't fully emulate a real-world corporation.
-Equality across all member ranks. It's important for security to keep certain things accessible only to long-time highly trusted members, but every effort should be made to make as much as possible available to any member as soon as possible.
-A high degree of independence. We do a lot of things together as a group, but if someone wants to go do something else they're always welcome to. We don't force any of our members to do anything they don't enjoy.
-Leaders who lead by example, partake in as much grunt work as they ask of any other member, and never use their leadership positions to occupy a disproportionate share of the corp's wealth for their own personal use.

Yes I almost forgot to mention, you need an awesome name.
Also, don't say, "we are looking for mature, independent players who work well with a team blah blah blah." Everybody says that. They should be unwritten requirements, simply qualities you look for in applicants as you get to know and judge them. Stating that you're looking for that only encourages people to put on a fake smile and bull**** their way into your ranks. Try to get to know applicants for who they are, not who they think you want them to be.
Also, I strongly advise against running around spamming recruitment messages in noob systems or anything. You want a fairly slow growth rate so that new members become familiar with the way things work before you let many more in--that way you've only got a few new, adjusting people at any given time and there will always be enough experienced members to get them into the swing of things.
So I suggest that, rather than recruiting any random person who's willing to join, you just invite good people you meet at whatever rate you happen to meet them.

My own personal advice would be:
Don't force growth on yourself, don't advertise for memebers.
Whilst I've seen a lot of claims that EVE is not for the solo player or the small corp, the reality is quite different - particularly in the advent of a couple, or few, small corps banding together but retaining their own identity and purpose.
Even outside that soloists can do well, as can small corps. I daresay that for sheer "RL bums-on-seats" BBBB is one of the most succesful in the game (in terms of items/ships/wealth/etc).
That's not too boast - simply to nay-say those who might tell you that only numbers count.
You dont "have too" have large numbers to suceed - small tiem success on its own brings its own rewards - and , invariably, attracts the right sort of like-minded person to you.
Of course, giving out free-fries with every transaction in EVE helps also.

A corporation is truly what you make it. The core leadership is critical, as they need to be on a lot, leading by example. Being charismatic helps as well as picking what sort of corporation you wish to lead. From nose wiper to organizer of an independent pilot faction. I would strongly recommend you write down what you want to achieve, list your goals as forming and maintaining a corporation of any online organization takes a lot of work and commitment. Being online a lot is a must as the membership to your organization feed off your own commitment to the game as well as your people skills.

A good corp will get it's members ****ed of at eachother to the point of fighting till eachother's ships are destroyed, or concord shows up to break up the fight. Brining a new definition to the meaning of Teamkill. Why chase after Pkers when you can pod your fellow mate. :D ------------------

I say there's a couple things if you're starting a corporation.
1: Decide what you want to do. Do you want to run a large corp, and if you want to, will you feasibly have the time to do it. Would you rather run a small corp with members you can trust and respect, and know will log in from day to day who you can build relationships with?
2: Look for people. Recruiting is, or at least can be bad. There's a chance you'll find good people who are new to the game, but there's a far larger chance of inviting variables into your corporation who don't mesh well with your own attitudes. This means, you're going to have to do a lot of talking to people, you're going to have to start up a lot of conversations, and you'll have a lot of communication charges :) Do not expect people to drop into your office and join up. Do not expect your corp to just grow on reputation alone if you're 2 people. You're going to have to become known.
3: If there's something that you can't do yourself, say for instance, you want to grow the corp, but you're not able or not very social yourself, find someone else who's willing to do it, and compensate them for their time, in whatever way is appropriate. A good leader knows how to delegate responsibility and doesn't try to do everything on their own.
4: if you're starting, consider joining with other small corporations, whether just through an alliance or a merger even if just temporary. While large numbers aren't necessary, it's difficult to attract players to your 2 member corporation, especially when there's 600 other 2 member corporations who are looking for members as well.
5: Have fun, if you're going to lead, do it because you want to, and do it because you're enjoying it. If you start up your corp and it's too much administration or you're not getting as much enjoyment out of it as if someone else were perhaps calling the shots for it, don't be ashamed to join another corp. The game is made to be enjoyed, not be a job.

1. Take timezones into account. We had a member who left because he was the only US player. We recruited 5 US players the next week.
2. Interview potential members. Not only is this a great opportunity to suss them out but can be a good RP opportunity (if you're iterested in RPing).
3. The best corps aren't always the biggest. we've got 10 members now and we're having a great time (I hope).
4. A great name. We thought for a few days about our name and I think it's great. Look up what it means. ----------------------------------------- Don't jump off the roof dad. You'll make a hole in the yard. ----------------------------------------- |

Benchmarking other corporations cant be a bad idea. Try studying their websites and talk to their employees and people who they do business with.
Dont be what every other guy is. Try to find your own niche.
Take a look at TTI's website. Maybe you and your friends vould be interested in starting a company within TTI?
What ever you end up with, I wish you good luck with your soon to be formed corporation. :)

===> What makes a corporation great:
* Environment where members can do what they enjoy doing and doesn't force people to do things they dispise
* Doesn't use new members as slave labor
* Ability for members to accumulate wealth and persue their own personal goals
===> What makes a corporation suck:
* Incompetent leadership and poorly defined goals
* A "For Profit" corporation with no system in place for employees to get paid. Free skills does not constitute payment!
* "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs"
