Here is a screenshot of the opening scene for the movie. It doesn't show much (yet) but I'll be releasing more screenshots of the movie as we move along in production. Enjoy!

Lighting looks a lot better then the preview, however, it's still really flat. Try adding a bluish fill from the left.
Compositionally, my eye lands dead on the gate as it is by far the brightest portion of the image. You have an impressive looking planet, i would think you'd want the viewer to pay attention to it as well
At this point, and please don't take offense, the game engine looks more impressive. I'm not sure what package you're using but you should take advantage of some of the advanced renders out there as well as shaders, atmospherics ect ect.

Hehe, no offense taken. This composite was done before a professional compositor came on board to help me. With his talents on this film I'm sure it will put to rest any of your concerns. For example, were i was doing an average of 8 passes per shot I'm now doing upwards of 16 passes for the same type of shot. This gives a lot more control in post. Thanks for the honest feedback.

In total, there are 14 people including myself (to date). Two people worked on the model extraction tool, one writing the dialog, one helped me with story development, one for music selection, one for sound effects, one for compositing, and one for rendering. I'm doing all the animation, storyboarding and directing of this production. There are a handful of others that are helping me with R&D here and there.

You guys, and everyone that does projects like this (Seleene, Lowa, Leafo, Llebring, Khanda, Max and many many others) are an absolute core of what makes this game so fun to play, and why this community is so addictive.
I've been playing for over a year and a half now. For any other game I show my friends, I give them a link and tell them to check it out. For Eve, I give them movies, and tell them "yes man, it really IS just like that, If you want it to be."
It just leaves them speachless. As it is right now, when I show someone Eve, I play 2 short videos. 1 is the Evol trailer for this CGI rendering kick, the other is Meridius' short (and gorgeous) clip of blowing up stuff in Eve. Anyone I show usually gets kinda speachless and just says "wow".
I could only dream of doing a project this intense. The kind of effort (time, resources, knowledge) it takes to do a project like this is simply more than even some of the best vid-makers have to offer.
It is obviously one of the most anticipated events in all of the Eve community. At this point, I would almost liken it to a Shiva patch. It will truely be ground breaking when it comes out. For that reason, I totally respect the time you guys want to invest in it, and ensure that everything is exactly the way you want it when you release it to the public.
So I guess we'll just have to wait, anxiously. ;) Big thx to all you guys (and gals) working on it.

Biff - in regards to sound, are you going to handle that too?
One of my guys in Tyrants works as a sound editor for a majore broadcast tv network in US and has experience, skills and equipment to make the sound (speech, soundeffects and what not) professionally.

I love it. It's gorgeos.
Would you make it a bit bigger and throw it up on deviantart.com or some such so we can have it as a desktop? I mean, really something that gorgeos should be on my desktop so I can look at it every day.

That is very very impressive. The moon near the planet adds a lot of depth since it seems to be sitting in the middleground. One thing that concerns me is the texture detail of the stargate itself and other objects within eve that are supposed to be monstrous in size but look very blurred up close. It doesn't hold a candle to the awesome texturing of the planet surface
The light looks almost fluid (i'm assuming you captured the screenshot right in the middle of the activation sequence), and the gate doesn't do it justice either.
Your movie is no doubt going to rock. Any more details that you can share with us? Expected length, theme, render time, etc _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning.

The texture on the planet was made by me therefore it was made at a very high res, the moon texture is actually a texture of Neptune provided by NASA. Now that I have a professional compositor on board we are taking steps to try and compensate for the lower res textures on the in-game models. I'm exploring anti-aliasing techniques to sharpen up the textures a bit and we are also rendering more passes for each of the objects in the scene. For instance in this image the gate will be rendered at least 5 times in 5 different ways. I render 3-4 light passes, a shadow pass, a specular pass (for reflections and highlights), etc. These renders are then combined together in post much like you would combine things in Photoshop with layers. This gives us a lot of control over the different features of the models and texutes.
In the movie the gate will function differently than it does in game. In the game, the gate runs through an animation loop for each ship passing through it. This didn't work very well visually in a linear sequence. In the movie when a group of ships uses the gate it will build up, like it does in game, then stay open, like you see it in the screenshot, and the ships will come flying through the middle of gate, out of the light. Only after all ships in the group have come through will the gate deactivate.
This episode is the first of four episodes. Each episode will be roughly five minutes long, making the complete story around 20 minutes. Without giving too much away the movie is about an arms race set in the future of EVE. There will be a ship in this movie that is well known but not yet available in game.
As for the render time we are putting the final touches on the production pipeline. I have a friend at NASA that will be doing the rendering for me using one of NASA's render farms.
