Although a novel idea...it's pretty sad that the devs have to make cute storylines to cover their bugs. Instead of the story creations, how about fixing them? Isn't this what is happening or am I loosing it?
See below if you don't know what I am talking about:
Raneilles VI - Moon 14 - Core Complexion Inc. Factory docks trashed! Earlier today an overloaded transport vessel bumped into some vital components of the outer docking mechanism at Raneilles VI - Moon 14 - Core Complexion Inc. Factory station. Damages to the docks were fortunately minimal but the ships hull was severely damaged causing a massive spill of the cargo of garbage. Cleaning is under way but until all the mess has been cleared up pilots are advised to stay clear of Raneilles VI - Moon 14 - Core Complexion Inc. Factory station or risk being stuck there for some time.
2003.07.15 Gehi IX - Moon 4 and Mora VI - Moon 4 stations clear for docking. Operators of the docking facilities at Mora VI - Moon 4 - Ishukone Corporation Factory and Gehi IX - Moon 4 Royal Khanid Navy Assembly Plant have ended their strike after intense negotiations with station owners. "They showed us that they have real understanding of what it means to support a drone on minimum wage", one worker observed.
2003.07.14 Ships docked at Gehi IX - Moon 4 and Mora VI - Moon 4 stations unable to undock. Operators of the docking facilities at Mora VI - Moon 4 - Ishukone Corporation Factory and Gehi IX - Moon 4 Royal Khanid Navy Assembly Plant have gone on strike to underline their wishes for a better dental plan and longer holidays. The stand-in operators, just out of school, are having some trouble in their duties resulting in ships being unable to undock. Travellers are advised not to dock at Gehi or Mora if they can avoid it until the issue has been resolved.
2003.07.13 Corruption within Concord? The empires have launched a major investigation into the behavior of Concord agents, after it was revealed that contracts had not been fulfilled and many of their clients left without promised gains or in some cases, with actual losses. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the Concord administration and high level agents have already been suspended pending an investigation. No official statements have been issued as of yet, but a high ranking Concord official has stated off-record that "...the guilty will be removed from the ranks of Concord and the pages of history. Concord will prevail."
2003.07.11 Attention travellers! Reports are coming in about some jumpgates being unstable and going offline at times leaving travellers stranded in the systems. Systems most affected at this time seem to be Eletta and Yoma. Travellers are advised to avoid those systems if possible or risk being stuck there for some time while engineers make repairs

LOL true but I must admit I have not had a game use such a colorful way to explain bugs. It is kind of cute and refreashing then a bunch of technical talk. |

Did any of you sign up for a mmorpg or a mmog? Personally this game could be one great mmorpg if the storylines will start going. Having the devs giving a good example of roleplaying is something to be commended. This will let you immerse into the game more easily and that is what I like about mmorpg's. However if you play eve like a normal non-rpg games I can understand that you want to see the reports of mishappenings in plain old 'There is something wrong with this system. Please do not go there because there is a database error'
I think I prefer the way they do it now.

i have to agree. the devs coming up with little "stories" is better.
why do you need to know exactly what happend?? Something like
"we have experienced an unknown error with a sql query in so and so system due to multiple users jumping into the system exactly at the same time. we are looking into the code base that creates this error."
are you going to help them fix it? it's fine the way they do it now. creative at least and does provide a little atmosphere. ______________________________________________ Hellmar > sorry for the attitude, playing a n00b character through the current state just left me a bit bitter dev chat: Mar 18, 2004

I think the little explanations are great.
It's a pity the player base can't interact with them a little more...
Eg: A severe case of space flu has struck down the dock workers at Du Annes VI, please do not dock there... etc..
All the corps / players that delivery more than 2000 units of antibiotics get a faction increase, or a new agent, or cheaper trade goods for 1 day, etc...
Stuff like that would be another interaction, but not complusory.

i like the little info bursts, but it whould be cool to see repair drones buzzing round stations going about stuff :)
kind of like a forwarning that theres trouble at the station, so dock at your own risk.
whould make it a little more immersive.. ______________

Edited by: Mr Box on 28/07/2003 01:30:12 I think its superb the way they do it atm.
Since no devs ever say, we f*&^úd up, the codes got a few bugs that we either cant find/fix immedately, followed by the exact details.
I think the creative way is exelent. Also adds more depth to the game.

The rp messages is to make it more fun, it's not a part of the storyline. I guess some people prefers to hear what happened instead of this, but then there are people who like this better. And the rp messages is what they decided to do.
And for what really happened, you can easily check the DEV BLOG to find out..

I like the RPed bug/glitch. I'd rather have a coloured RP warning of a problem which keeps me immersed than dull tech talk.

So what they should post it as?
Y0 d00d the get stuK bUg is g3TinG p30p|e stUcK at ZtAti0n x |n sYst3m y.
or
Entering or exiting station x in system y may result in your character becoming stuck. Please do not attempt to dock/undock from this station.
I like the way they are handling it.

I find the immersive quality of the "news" a great addition to a universe of this scope. As long as the "news" continues to provide enough information as to the danger or whatever, then I'm good with it.
Besides, I know coders - I manage them. Coding isn't quick and making sure that fixing the bug doesn't affect another portion of the game is very important.
Coding takes time - the "news" is a good way to "pass the time."
Remember, coders are your friends, but only if you give them time to do their jobs.

it's all about roleplay not being uptight..
6 years ago you would be playing this game alone against the computer with no daily updates, and no player or online interaction.

CCP is doing a fantastic job. Coding a project of this scale is a HUGE task. I have found that in most cases, the Dev Blog does describe the bugs in more detail than the News section, so look there from time to time. I have been amazed by how much the devs are actually sharing with us, so it seems silly to attack them for keeping the RPG aspect in full swing, even when there are problems.

To me, the fact that the Dev's tell us about Bugs in that way actualy shows us they CARE ABOUT US. Instead of a little popup saying "Sorry (incert station here) is currently down. Enter at your own risk" they give us a little entertaining paragraph about the problem in a way that makes us understand whats going on but it dosnt realy interfear with the game as we play it. Its more like a comercial to me on a radio when i read a litle paragraph of some problem somewere.
Example wold be that while im mining, or playing guard in a belt i suddenly read a message about some fool liner takeing out half of the bay door at a station and that travlers are urged to bypass that station till repairs are made. I catch myself thinking what kind of idiot would hit a door that big =)
The way they explain bugs basicaly relaxes people a bit. Honesly.. when bugs are braudcasted in EQ and Planetside, UO, and AO in the "blunt fisted, here's your info, like it or not" fassion. how many times have you seen the chat suddenly explode with complaints?.. and how often does anyone in the chat even complain about a message that CCP Gives about a bug? Most of the time people actualy start talking about the storyline the bug was included in rather than the bug itself

I love the RP "bug" reports. Think they're a great addition to a necessary evil.
I just wish they'd stop referring to OOC stuff in the news--downtime, etc.
I alsowish they'd change the date format in-game to the current Eve year, and I'd like to see "character" sheet changed to "pilot information," or something more RP.
But the RP bug reports? Brilliant.

Oh come on, how many people actually READ that tripe? A lot of you say stuff like 'oh they care about us,' but lets face it, its bull**** that no one actually bothers to look at.
A factual, simple, reporting of system bugs on the startup page has the benefit of brevity and clarity. It may not seem like role playing, but it does the one most important thing that the RPG storylines do not - it conveys the message.
I suspect that most of you cooing and crowing about how good the RPG stories are do not actually read them, and so do not know about the bugs. Because its a ****poor way to explain things.
A simple bug report would take up far less room, be easier to read, and would convey the problems likely to be encountered with greater clarity.

Actually I read the 'tripe' and enjoy it.
This IS a mmorpg and I give full marks to ccp not only for staying in context with the news but also the answers to my stuck petitions, when I was unfortunate enough to get caught in 2 station shutdowns in a row....
At least it makes me feel like they are trying.
How many of us are here from other mmorpg's where its clear they don't really care....until you vote with your feet.

Edited by: Firekraker on 07/08/2003 20:14:53 I for one don't mind reading those amusing little accident reports. I can also understand why someone would like it a bit more official.
Perhaps an option in settings to view a plain error logs versu the RP stories. To each their own I say. I for one will stick with the stories.
